Well this is a nice gathering spot with the San Francisco heart sculptures. If it wasn't for those people drumming up business for those tourist busses as I walk by, it would be 5 stars. Do I look like a tourist? Am I wearing shorts? Well today was free tulip day. 90 minutes in line that went completely around the block, before you got to the maze inside. Very well organized. "What is the line for"? I couldn't resist...the women's restroom. That cracked everyone up. Anyway free tulips with bulbs today. When the blooms go, I can plant them and remember this day. I started my last day in San Francisco here in Union Square. I wanted to see this specifically because of a recommendation from a friend. I guess I came in too early cause there was nothing going on. It was very quiet, the chairs were all bunched up. It was an open area almost cause they cleared it out. It was nice seeing this landmark although there wasn't much to do. read more

Well, things have changed quite a bit over the past year in Union square. I wouldn't put "safe" has the best term for this area, which is unfortunate because this is the main area for shopping, and considering the holiday season is knocking on the front door, things should be very busy here. Due to the very recent robberies here, there is an abundance of police and security at the more high-end stores in the area. It's needed. Very big impact for tourist and locals. now that the Christmas tree is up and the skating rink is in full motion, hopefully things will become more friendly. read more

We visited Union Square, parked at the Union Square Garage and walked around the Square. The large Union Square Christmas Tree is up as well as the ice skating rink. There is a new high end coffee shop that opened last month that serves up nice pastry and coffees. It is on the expensive side so be prepared to pay around $17.00 for a croissant and a large mocha. This place will make lots of money around the Christmas time with Santa Con coming and lots of tourists visiting Union Square. Otherwise lots of tourists out shopping will be visiting this unique San Francisco landmark. read more

What isn't to like about Union Square!? All the action is here. Whether you want to eat, drink or sight see, its all here within steps. My only gripe is parking... very sparce and overpriced! Took my wife here to ride the historic cable cars. Parked and paid $18 for a little over two hours! Yikes! It was worth it though. There is a bit of construction though so it didn't make for ideal photos. There was also a hotel staff on strike at the W which was accross the street. I'll be back again for sure but will make sure to plan accordingly. With so much to see and do, it is suggested to stay near by if you want to enjoy all that Union Square has to offer. During holidays, its damn near impossible to het around. Take the muni and save yourself some time and money. You can thank me later. SF is beautiful. Can't wait to visit again. read more

We visited Union Square twice in one day. The first time was late afternoon. We bought some wine and coffee (expensive). Found a place to sit and watched the world go by. As the sun was going down, we checked out the food court on the LL (Lower Level?) of Macy's and decided to find a nearby Italian Restaurant. After dinner, we returned to Union Square to enjoy the Christmas Tree and lights. We sat near the tree and took some nice photographs. The ice rink looked interesting. We stood around for a half an hour or so because there is no good place to sit and watch the skaters in the ice rink. We felt reasonably safe and comfortable in Union Square; however, walking the streets around the Square was a different story. More than once we were approached by people asking for money. The sidewalks are dirty. One of the women in our group was carrying a purse. She walked next to buildings keeping the purse between her and the walls. Two of us walked behind her making it very difficult for anyone to get near her. I kept my phone zipped inside my jacket. Such is the state of San Francisco. read more

Lots of department stores swarm the area, and if that's your cup of tea, then you'll be in heaven! Otherwise not much going on here. Union square is such a great part of the city. This small area boasts lots of shops and views of the surrounding buildings. My personal favorite is to find the different heart sculptures at the corners of union square. This is a great place to sit and relax while enjoying San Francisco. I've also used this prime spot as a hop on and off of the trolley. There are also various events that take place in the square. Great place to come on a nice day to just relax. read more

Union Square is located in the heart of San Francisco and literally has everything you could possibly need. From a Macy's department store to a Louis Vuitton... a Tiffany & Co. to a hotel, the square has it all! There are a lot of double decker buses and tourists in this location, I would recommend the Big Bus if you're in San Fran looking for a tour bus guide!!! If you're looking to shop at a mall, Westfield is a couple of blocks down. The world famous Powell & Hyde streetcar also swings by around Union Square if you're looking to hop on that. People are generally very friendly around Union Square and helpful with directions, as it's easy to get lost if you don't know the area well. Another tourist attraction place in San Fran. Came here couple times and each time here I ended up getting nothing. I don't spur and spend money here. There is a shopping mall nearby and other street store. They even have Trader Joe here. Well, even at night time so many people here. There is a giant ice rink that offers free skating (like in Vancouver BC Robson Square). You won't miss Union Square once you see Macy's. Many of the retailers have packed up and left this once thriving shopping district. The deterioration of a once proud city makes it unsafe to use public transportation and go to the area at night. The city still has many breathtaking views, but the city's infrastructure is crumbling due to high crime and ever growing homeless population. read more

They actually helped to fund the civil war! Alma Spreckles was the first person in her family to go to college and she talked to her professors and became the model for the art classes. Adolph Spreckles adores her wanted her and because his family owned a sugar company..this is where the term..Sugar Daddy actually came from!! She was from a poor family and society didn't respect her union to the young son! Go figure...never would've known! I used to work at a store a few blocked from here and always considered it to be a fun vibrant spot with tons of tourists taking pictures everywhere. It still is full of tourists and the ice skate rink is full of peeps before Christmas. The Xmas tree stands tall surrounded by Saks Fifth, the Westin, Nieman Marcus and Macy's. it's a fun shopping district but absolutely a nightmare driving in this area and so is parking. Highly recommend taking BART or other public transportation. read more

I like Union square. Not a fan of the stores right on the square, but it's a great center point in San Francisco for locals and tourists. My favorite time in Union square is around the holidays. Today the biggest problem with Union square is the crime. There is a very reasonable chance you're going to be scammed, and you might even be pickpocketed or robbed. Stores around Union square are doing their best to maintain security, but the likelihood of a massive snatch and grab is very high. If you can avoid parking anywhere near Union square, unless money is no object, you will feel much better about your visit. Come through on a weekend and park at a metered spot somewhere south of market. It's a nice walk to Union square, and you won't be subjected to the ludicrously high parking garage rates. And don't be fooled, parking in a parking garage on Union square does not make you any less likely of being victimized by a break-in to your car. read more

Union Square has a mix of tourists and locals coming through this area. Google find artist selling or displaying their art, bikers or skateboarders with loud stereos, people giving out pamphlets, a couple on a date, large groups or singles spending a day/night out. * One picturesque thing to do here is to take a picture with the big red heart at the corner of the square. If you draw your gays up to the balcony of the Cheesecake Factory in the Macy's building across the square, he will see Taurus and guess looking down at the square and taking pictures. My friends and I visited on a weekend in September, and though it was a bit chilly at night, we decided to buy some soup and bread bowls from the Boudin restaurant at the bottom floor of the Macy's building, and eat outside. It was a great evening and great atmosphere to be outdoors and enjoy warm soup. There are also two cafes on either side of the square which I haven't tried but they sell hot drinks and some pastries. Parking is definitely difficult especially on a weekend, but we managed to find parking a few blocks away that had signs for free parking after 6 or 7 p.m. read more

Fantastic local tourist attraction nearby lots of department stores, hotels, restaurants, as well as the Hyde/Powell Street Cable trolley stop. Located across a famous hotel called the Westin Hotel. Has Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour stop at the north end of this tourist attraction. My uncle and aunt both of whom live in the Bay Area showed me around this site. I enjoyed my time there and highly recommend tourists coming over here. I did notice a middle age man selling tons of art work and art picture frames at Union Square. read more

Great place if you want to go shopping. They have a lot of stores here. However, it isn't a very child friendly place. There were several homeless people who were harassing pedestrians on the street. One was purposely getting into people's personal spaces like near a pedestrian's neck/face. Another was just yelling/screaming really loudly. It made me feel kind of uneasy since I was with my baby. If it was just myself, I wouldn't have cared. It isn't a place where your toddler can run around loose. read more

Union Square is a dream come true there Macy's carries designer clothing such as Burberry Chanel Prada Fendi Louis Vuitton Dolce. Macy's is 10 floors they used to have a cheesecake factory on the very top floor which is open and really really lovely but that part close down there are still 10 floors of shopping and Macy's and it's the best Macy's you'll ever go to in your life aside from that Union Square is beautiful there's a park a big beautiful open park right across from that Macy's I mentioned there's a BCBG right across them that there's one of the last borders bookstores ever just a little bit up the street on Powell not to mention there's Salvatore Ferragamo there is a Gucci store there's Ferre, there's the Dior store, Of course there's a Louis Vuitton store a Rolex store and everything else that you can imagine there's an FAO Schwartz for kids, and in the winter it's absolutely beautiful it's the perfect place to be during the winter time it feels like better than Manhattan in the winter you really feel the weather the cold and you feel like shopping your ass off. Union Square is a large shopping district full of diverse shops and people, all of whom share the love of exploring the wonders of each store. During the winter season, there is a large and brightly lit Christmas tree perched between Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, and the Apple store. As a tourist, I was concerned that it would be dangerous to walk around in the night time, but when I saw how many people were there, it eased my conscience and allowed me to comfortably take in the lights, music, and breezy night air. If you are not a big fan of extremely crowded areas, then Union Square is best to visit during the early morning or late afternoons. read more

Union Square is the place for shopping. There is basically any and everything that you could ever want as far as stores go. It's very crowded and fast paced. There are people everywhere, all in a hurry. The area had an ice skating rink and a Christmas tree when I went in November. It was very pretty. A lot of music all around. It was nicely decorated for the holidays. Everything was pretty clean and organized for being so large. I would recommend everyone going at least once to check it out. read more

Union Square is centrally located within Macy's, Neimus Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Tiffany's. A great place to be if you love the energy of constant foot traffic. I find it hard to read or meditate when people are always walking around you. On top of that, you get the bell ringing cable car loudly passing the St. Francis Hotel.
