United is really committed to making things disappear... first my flight, then my review from their Google page lol. At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if they erased my memory of the whole experience. But accountability? That's one thing they have no interest in making appear... In the early hours of 01/07/2025, my mother and I (both American citizens following U.S. travel guidelines) arrived at the Port Columbus International airport (CMH) around 04:00 AM for our 06:00 AM United 3430 flight, giving ourselves ample time to check in. CMH was only our connecting point to IAD, where we were scheduled to board our actual international flight. Despite this, United's check-in staff insisted my mother and I present our tourist visas. This demand made no sense, CMH was just a connection to IAD, where we would board our actual international flight. Their request was completely absurd because, per IATA's official guidelines for our destination, a tourist visa was not required in advance, as we were eligible to obtain one upon arrival. This highlighted an alarming lack of knowledge for airline employees responsible for passenger check-in. Yet, instead of verifying the information, they denied us boarding entirely. This wasn't a misunderstanding. It was pure incompetence and a blatant refusal to verify U.S. travel regulations and IATA policies. Even when we had a United customer service representative on the phone ready to clarify, the check-in staff outright refused to listen. Instead of handling the matter professionally, we were met with hostility and condescending behavior from multiple check-in employees. One staff member even went as far as to question the validity of the U.S. government's own website, scoffing at the guidelines and responding with, "Well, honey, this is 2025..." as if government travel policies somehow expired at the start of the new year. After over five hours of trying to clarify the situation, their dismissive and condescending attitudes persisted. With no other option, we rebooked our travel through Cathay Pacific for 01/09/2025, entirely at our own expense. Our new itinerary had us flying American Airlines from CMH to ORD, connecting to Cathay Pacific. Because of this, we missed the funeral, adding to an already difficult time and preventing us from grieving properly. We had no such issue flying with American Airlines on a nearly identical itinerary with an international connection on 01/09/2025. Yet, United's check-in staff insisted their rules were different, something I've never encountered before. They claimed we needed to present tourist visas, which was completely false. Airlines don't set their own visa requirements; they follow government regulations and IATA guidelines. Somehow, with this crew, that was up for debate (lol). Their refusal to verify the correct information before denying us boarding was completely unacceptable. That failure to follow proper procedures caused us unnecessary stress, financial loss, and, most importantly, made us miss a loved one's funeral. To make matters worse, United has refused to refund the flights they wrongfully denied us boarding on, despite the fact that their staff's failure to follow basic procedures caused this situation. Instead of taking accountability, they've forced us to bear the financial burden of their mistake. Not only did we lose money, but we had to spend time and energy finding another way to reach our destination. I have given United way too many chances and they don't deliver. I called 2 weeks before flight, and reserved two dogs (personal items). I received confirmation numbers for 150 each, but found out later that one of them didn't go through. 2nd, there are not enough agents to handle this mistake. We are 45 minutes and counting waiting in line just to fix this mistake. 3rdly, their online app isn't working. My husband and I tried to check in last night, but none of them went through. 4th, having called 2 weeks in advance, I was told we can sit together. We boarded the flight from ORD to IAD at 7:25 pm then sat at the gate until 8:42 pm as the captain said he was waiting on paperwork. The other issue is I am on first class and the lazy ass attendants dont offer any beverages the 1:18 minutes we sat at the gate or during the flight. The captain said the flight would be rough so he wanted the attendents to stay in their seats during the duration of the flight... we pay for first classto getthe better seat and service while in flight. I thought I was the worst in the world at being on time for sh*t... but then I met United. The biggest kicker here is that I'm a person who once I've been scorned, forgiveness is never on the table. This was not my first time being burned by United, but I ended up booking a flight with them again for the simplest of reasons: I forgot how much I loathed them and they offered a flight at a convenient time for the purpose of my trip. Lesson learned. Officially. While United's f*ck ups this time around weren't nearly as catastrophic as the last time I (almost didn't) flew with them, it was annoying enough of an experience to be emblazoned in my mind forever. It all boils down to my last trip out of state for work and both my outbound and inbound flights having 5 delays, resulting in my being hours late both ways and several gate changes - but not just any kind of gate changes, the kind of gate changes where you start at the initial scheduled gate in the ozarks of the airport and then are told multiple times that you need to make the mad dash to the exact opposite end of the airport, a quarter mile away. Then when you get to that new gate, you find out that the flight has been delayed again, again, and that you now need to find seating in an area of people who've been stranded by United's lack of organization since the night before... luckily you find a pretty clutch seat next to a nice single mother and her 3 young children who argue endlessly over who gets to use the iPad, while pulling each other's pony tails, and the youngest kid who doesn't utter a world the first two hours of wreaking havoc on her siblings and then at decides to at random stand up on the seat next to you and yell, "I SMELL BLOOD." at the top of her lungs. Le sigh. The weirdest part is, I kind of did smell blood after she said that. Oh, United. One thing to also note about flying United is that apparently they've taken on the obesity issue in America by adding more length to their standard size of seat belts. You are still able to request an extra seat belt extension if the upgraded length is still too small. The only problem with that is that chances are if you need that added seat belt piece, you won't actually fit into a standard single seat. I learned this after talking with my close-quarters seat mate on my flight both ways as they noted they buy with Unites because the seat belts are larger and they hate having to request the extension belt on other carriers. In both my flight instances, neither of my seat partners could fit in to the standard seat with the armrest down and our flight had to wait while they tried to squish into the space unsuccessfully. Both times I offered to go sans armrest so the other person could take up part of my seat to fit into the seating area and both people were very grateful, which resulted in some very brief warm fuzzy feelings on my part, that were quickly squashed when I realized I'd paid $450 for a seat that someone else was getting to use more of than I was as I sat for the duration of both flights jammed up against the window with all my appendages folded over each other. I think it's great that United offers this for it's larger customers, however, it definitely sucks to be on their flights if that's not something you require and you may find yourself forfeiting the majority of your seat and your comfort to someone else. read more

My United flight was on time, for probably the first time since United has been in existence, but that doesn't really say much. United flights out of Columbus are stupidly expensive, and I actually prefer making a one-stop-transfer/plane change with Southwest to dealing with United's idiocy. THAT'S HOW BAD UNITED IS. I'D RATHER SPEND EXTRA HOURS DOING A PLANE CHANGE THAN DEAL WITH THEM. There were a number of reasons why I ended up having to fly United this time... but ugh. It was almost not worth it. Plus, they force everyone to tag their luggage if it's larger than a school-sized backpack, but when you get on the plane, the overhead compartments are super clear (and I'm pretty sure they were barely half-filled by the time we took off), thus making the gate-check pretty pointless. Luckily, I only had a backpack, but I probably would have mentally thrown a tantrum in my head if they made me check my bag when there's so much space in the overhead. Ugh. Now I'm just waiting for a disaster to happen on my return fight. I'd be delusional to expect anything otherwise. read more

So let me start by telling you that I missed my flight. I was freaking out, but when I had arrived to the terminal the gentleman was so calm and confident. He immediately helped me feel comfortable with the fact that I had just missed my flight. He not only fixed the situation by placing me on the next flight out but it was no additional charge and I even arrived sooner than expected as the new flight didn't have a stop! Thank you! Wow - really bad experience with United this morning! We got to the airport on time after having to reschedule our early morning flight due to cancellation. The girl at the kiosk that we were trying to check in at refused to acknowledge us - not sure why - and helped everyone around us. She then proceeded to walk away from the kiosk, around to where passengers were waiting to check in, and told someone to come over to help us. I could not believe how rude she was! If you are working in customer service, you need to be willing to help everyone! read more

Horrible service. Especially the ticket agents in CMH airport are very rude and have no customer service skills. This was the worse experience I've ever had with United and this has made my decision of making United not one of my first choices anymore. First kept delaying the flight and they rerouted only some of us, kept telling us we would be fine. Then delayed us more saying if it gets closer than will reroute you. I wish I could give no stars. Continental was my favorite airline back in the day. Today's United is just awful. We spent hours of wasted time for maintenance issues for the planes. We had a VERY long flight that was delayed due to United maintenance issues that resulted in our missing our next connection. (We ran the entire way from Gate B in Houston to Gate C. First gate agent told us we had made our flight, but once we ran the last 100 yards, the nasty guy at the gangway said we were too late.) The gate agent was surly...growled at us then gave us a ticket for a flight 3 hours later - not even an "I'm sorry". Just a nasty gate person. It was United's fault that we missed our connection. It was a maintenance issue with their plane, not a weather delay. They did not make things right. After waiting an extra 3 hours for the new flight, we got on the plane for home and spent 1 1/2 hours sitting on the tarmac due to yet another maintenance issue with the plane. The only good thing is that the flight attendants and crews are still really great. United needs to get its act together with plane maintenance and retrain the gate agents. read more

When we arrived had Camren as the attend who should have been checking us in but instead began changing the paper on printer. My husband ask for her assistance she said use the self checkin! We told her we were not familiar with process she ignored us. We were the only people in her line. As we looked at he other lady's line it was long but she was helping everyone and her line was quickly moving. Needless to say by the time we were finished with process we were charged for bags but our boarding passes were not printed and the flight had been restricted so we MISSED our flight! When we asked her why she said it was because we needed to have checked in at least 30 minutes prior to boarding. We stated if she could have helped she could have done in 5 minutes what it took us 15-20 minutes. She even encouraged us to switch our seats on flight which of course took more time! This Carmen attendant informed is out next available flight would be at 5pm. Our original flight had been to depart at 8:45. Needless to say we were very upset. When she was attempting to search for flights she seemed to have a have sarcastic smirk on her face. Love united. They did a great job at the gate. Checkin was a little rough due to crazy people - but the gate agents were wonderful. Boarding was paused for a maintenance check and they clearly communicated expectations with passengers. Boarding started back up 10 mins later. Ground crew stayed on alert to grab extra bags due to small size of the plane. Great boarding experience and overall happy with united in columbus. read more

Drew was the person that helped my family from Seattle check in which consisted of 6 family members and also called for a wheelchair for the family member that was walking with a cane. So I booked a flight on expedia to go out to Boston and see my sister for vacation. Pretty simple. I am not a frequent flyer so I just went with the one that was the cheapest for my needs. I get up super early to get to my flight on time. It was delayed; no problem, shit happens. After 50 minutes of recurring delay messages it becomes apparent we are gonna have to deplane regardless. I was angry, but again, shit happens. What really made me mad was that I was flying to Newark for a connection to Boston. Most people there were flying for an international flight that they were not gonna get reimbursed for (as far as they knew; idk what happened with others). Nobody seemed ready to step up to help resolve the issue at the time. Finally some nice lady started working out the problems; I really wish I remember her name but she was the only competent employee I saw in 5 hours. The rest just gave a weak 'there is a malfunction' excuse and didn't give a timeline to fix. Finally I give up and tell them I need to schedule for tomorrow. Even that was a massive hassle. I've never really payed attention to which provider gives me service on flights (again, I fly maybe twice a year) but I'm never messing with United again. read more

My husband and I arrived several hours before our flight on 3/15 to D.C. There were delays for IAD, but we were assured that anyone affected with connecting flights would be notified. We waited and waited until my husband decided to go on CMH's website to see what time we would actually leave. Our departure time per CMH was after our connecting flight in IAD. We went to the counter and informed them of the issue and we were told they "accidentally overlooked" our connection. They sent us to American Airlines for a direct flight to MIA, but they never sent our luggage. American refused to board us until I was in tears and the woman boarding the plane said she would find our luggage and let us board. We arrived in Miami with no luggage. We were informed the next day that United pulled our luggage but never sent it to American, then to make matters worse they sent it to D.C. the next day! We never went to D.C. per their reassignment so why did they send it? Either way, American intercepted the luggage and had it flown into Key West and hand delivered to our door. It was honestly a rough start to our first trip without kids. I do not see me buying tickets through them again. read more

Never again on United. After 15 years, I foolishly gave them another chance. Overseas flight to Italy, stopover in Brussels. After enduring hours in line for customs due to a work slow down (apparently had been ongoing- thanks for the warning, United), wefinally start to board the flight to Italy. We have confirmed reservations ( for 8 months!), boarding passes, and seat assignments . They have my wife's reservation, but not mine! HOW do you "lose" a passenger mid-flight? HOW do I have an signed seat, reconfirmed the day before, but now I don't exist? After 45 minutes, wefinally are able to board, now in the rear of the crowded plane, instead of row 4. No one from United ever contacts us, or tries to make amends. Indeed, the NEXT day they email us to tell us our return flight has been CANCELLED! My wife hastospend over an hour rebooking our way home. We haven't left to return home yet, and I dread how they will manage to screw this up. NEVER AGAIN!!! read more
