Went here with some buddies of mine, it's a great place. I bonded with some other guys and had a great time, made some good memories here.

While this place on its own is rather nondescript, they host a banging party on the waterfront. I…read morehighly recommend a "Dancing on the Charles" event during the summertime. My gripes are that they tend to play more techy house music, and I like the deep stuff, and that the concrete patio isn't good on the ankles. Though the worst thing was the lack of bartenders. Like um, one. The queue was out the door. People were buying six packs so they wouldn't have to keep waiting in line for half an hour. BETTER SYSTEM! Also, they really need to get rid of the horrible orange plastic fence that obstructs the view of the gorgeous, moonlit river. I understand they don't want people to sneak in, but then just extend the fence to the water on either side. I doubt you'll have anyone swimming to enter, eh? But how can you beat grooving under the moon and stars alongside running water? Exactly. You can't.

No no no.. please don't put anymore dance nights on here please. I appreciate the idea - dancing…read moreoutdoors by the river, away from the public, somewhere cool and grungy. But let's say we start with 5 stars for that idea - well, we end up getting down to 1 star because: ::: -1 star ::: Concrete floor that destroys your ankles after 45 mins of serious dancing. Somebody hyelp, get me an ankle doctor. ::: -1 star ::: Location that really sucks when you want to move on. To where? How? Taxi! TAXI! Anyone? ::: -1 star ::: Volume gets turned down to itty bitty level at 12.45 so that if you want to seriously ass shake, you have to occupy a small area within 8ft of one of the two speakers to be able to feel the music ::: -1 star ::: Bar that although ridiculously cheap, is a huge nightmare - it's run by grumpy old boston guys who find any excuse not to serve you, revel in stacking up large lines, close early for no reason and just chat with their pervy buddies (one proudly announced to me he was a 'Tits Man' as he was staring at the girl beside me's boobs). It could be so much better. Maybe if I bring a hipflask, nike air max and my own ipod I'll have a good time here. I only went for the Thunderdome that sucked so maybe it can better on other nights.

Also as a Varsity Card holder, I get special invitations to private parties with free access and even free drinks! If you play on a league, you receive 10% off your individual team fee. The card can also be used at various venues for no line/no cover access and 10 - 20 % discounts on foods and products. Additionally, the card already comes equipped with $25 from BuyYourFriendADrink.com to use at participating bars! The best part is that I only have to carry one card to get all these discounts and special access, all the while doubling as my BYFAD card. Just a Note: SBS also offers a JV card as well with similar discounts and access.

One of my favorite things about our wonderful city of Boston is the abundance of active adults…read more Every day, I see more people running, biking or playing sports per capita than I have anywhere else. I am always quick to applaud the city and surrounding towns (way to go Cambridge and Somerville) for the wealth of outdoor activities, both solo and team-related, available to residents. One of my favorite such Boston-based young-people-centric outdoor activities is my weekly WAKA game at Roberto Clemente Field in the Fens. My team, the Electric Mayhem, has been together for years in the Ironsides League (there are several leagues in town), and through it I have met some of the nicest and most fun folks you can hope for. If anyone ever thinks that it's hard to make new friends, sign up for a WAKA team and you'll have a dozen new ones after a day. The Ironsides League (and I hear the same about the other ones) is just competitive enough to be fun. Teams have a vested interest in winning and playing hard, but not so much of an interest that folks get disgusted and enraged after a loss. Everyone's there to just play and have a good time. The leagues are all well-managed and that management leads to the quality of organization and general spirit of WAKA in Boston. So yeah, in short, get some comfy sneakers on and get to the field. It's game time.

You don't know any one and you find yourself getting excited to do laundry on the weekends just to pass time and loneliness. Ok, I admit, that's slightly dramatic and maybe a bit true. I joined WAKA when my childhood friend moved into the city so she could meet people outside her grad school program. After trying another kickball league, I just didn't want to enroll in a free agent alone. The concept of adult kickball leagues is pretty standard, you play a game of kickball and then you head to a bar to drink. At a previous league, everyone hangs out only with their team mates and hardly any mingling happens between teams. It's quite the opposite with WAKA and I could give credit to the company but the people make the difference. If you're not a person that likes high energy or loud bars, you're best off never joining this league. You really have to be prepare for happy, excited and really fun people. Yes the teams can be very competitive on the field but you may also make friends for a lifetime. It's cheesy, but I've found it to be truth in the making.

I had my wedding reception at the George Dilboy VFW Hall on August 1, 2009, and it turned out…read moregreat. My husband and I had a small budget for our wedding, but wanted to find a place we could celebrate with about 75 people that would be close to our neighborhood. I had made all of the arrangements with Pat, the Manager of the VFW, and she was a really nice older woman who helped with the contract and getting the caterer set-up. I think we paid about $300 to rent the hall for 4 hours, and we put a deposit of $250 for the cash-bar, which is refundable if your guests spend at least that much through out the night. There are also hooks all along the walls that you can use to hang things for decorations, but there are limitations on what can be put up, or taken down, since it is a VFW. The hall is surprisingly nice (I didn't know what to expect for a VFW) and there is a small stage at the front for the DJ. They also provide standard round tables, rectangular tables, and chairs for events, at no extra costs, which was super nice. There was a good size bar at the back of the hall, with reasonable prices for drinks, and a small kitchen that the caterer could use to prep for the wedding before hand. The only thing I wish was that the hall could be entered from the front of the building instead of the back, because the front entrance is quite pretty, but the back entrance leads to a darkish hall-way that smells of cigarette smoke permeating from the bar downstairs. Once you are inside the hall, though, everything is great, and the price can't be beat, since it's close to public transportation and has plenty of parking in the lot out back.

I know the commander well and neither he nor the bar manager (who both process applications) would ever say something like that. They welcome all new veterans with open arms and, unlike the last commander, have instituted a policy of paying your dues if you're still serving. We also do NOT have a family and wife chapter. There is a Ladies Auxiliary and Associate Membership. EDIT: Better late than never edit responding to ST, There is no one in our front office named "Paul". This was brought up at the meeting held after I saw this review as well and there is no Paul on the Board of Directors or in any command/leadership position that is ever in the front office. Furthermore, they are not working to bar non-pro war groups from marching. The first review smacks of some sort of troll/wank. I am female, a veteran, a full fledged member and I attend meetings and am part of the voting process at this post. And I have to say, I'm pretty pissed that this crock of BS is still on here.
