This place is something of a legend in the Columbus/West Point/Starkville area, and rightly so. The uninitiated might see it as just a gas station restaurant...but in actuality, it's one of the best places to get a sandwich in Mississippi. United Deli is family run, and everyone is happy to make recommendations if you're not sure what to get. They'll also be sure to remind you to grab a piece of baklava, too, which you probably should. :) When I visited with a friend, we got the grilled cheese and John's Special. Both were mega tasty - the highlight is the bread, which is crunchy at the edges and soft at the center. No idea if it's baked fresh, but it is GREAT bread. Everything, including the meats, tastes fresh here. The fries were a bit of a low point; they were hot and salty, but kind of unremarkable. My buddy and I came here for lunch when I first got to town. Well, it's inside a gas station, so don't expect a whole whole lot. That said, the sandwiches were HUGE. The bread was probably the highlight but it's a LOT of bread. The folks working here were super nice too. The people don't lie. I work in Columbus a ridiculous amount and get tired of making the regular rounds. Saw all the good reviews and wanted to try it out. I decided to get the gyro with fries and I was pretty happy. The meat was nice and juicy and was absolutely piled in a huge mountain on top of my pita. I had to eat about half of the meat before I could fold it to pick it up and eat the rest. Fries were ok. You can get fountain or bottle drinks separate. They have a lot of other cold cut sandwiches as well. That is what both of my guys got. One got the 9" and one got a 12". Can't remember what kind, both looked good but they are monstorous sandwiches. You definitely have to bring your A game if you want to finish in one sitting. Its definitely a hole in the wall place, but this place is good. Don't let the gas station vibe throw you off. The constant line proves this place is legit. I'll be back for sure. read more

I was a big fan of United Deli when I lived in Columbus. The servings are enormous -- like, expect to bring half of the food home -- and I'm a pretty big eater. Yes, it's in a service station, and doesn't really feel clean -- there's no ambiance. BUT. What really makes the sandwiches is the bread. They make it all right in front of you. I usually got the "John's" sandwich with potato salad. The cheeseburger is also excellent -- charred and juicy, tasting more like the kind your mom used to make. It's a family-owned business and the owner, John, is super nice. I don't think I've ever seen him look stressed or harried. The other thing I like about this place is the crowd is extremely diverse -- you'll see lawyers next to sanitation workers, people of all races and nationalities, men, women, families, elderly people. It's one of the few places in Columbus that is like this. If there is a downside, it's the Philly cheesesteak. It seems to have some kind of tomato sauce on it, with peppers. But to be fair, I've had the cheesesteaks at Pat's in Philly, so maybe my expectations were just too high. read more
