I've come to several concerts and shows here. It's such a nice and intimate location for a show. Super beautiful inside and very vintage yet they keep up with the beauty to make sure it doesn't look run down. The bar is always packed but great. Staff here is nice. I just wish there were more bathrooms for women and organization to get the lines moving. I do love that there are many places to eat/drink near by and close to public transportation too. read more

I love how this historic 1930's theatre has been lovingly restored with updated projection and sound. Highly ornate with many interesting architectural styles, it was originally designed by the architect of the legendary Ziegfeld Theatre with interiors by the designer of the Radio City Music Hall and the Waldorf Astoria. A designated New York City Landmark with over 3,000 seats, coming here for a movie or event is an incredible experience. read more

This is a stunning theater! A grand staircase, decadent decor - this is the essence of a fancy theater experience. There are two levels with plenty of red velvet colored seats. We had the pleasure of seeing a film here. I was so impressed by how quickly the staff was able to get people seated for a screening. You will go through metal detectors before entering the building. No food or drink allowed so make sure you empty things before going through security. I think they sell packaged popcorn and drinks. There is seating on the main level or you can take the staircase up to the balcony seating. The second level has restrooms. The movie lasted 2 hours and we had a special surprise with Lin Manuel Miranda showing up to do a Q&A with the star of the film and producer. I read they sell tickets for tours of the theater too! We came here to see the nutcracker. Tickets were not cheap. It wasn't the first nutcracker we have seen, but we figured for the price of the tickets it must be good, even seeing some tickets selling for $1000! Long story short we got our tickets an was expecting an amazing show. But to our surprise it's was anything but. There was no orchestra, I was wondering where the musicians were. There were children in the show, granted they tried their best but I didn't pay this amount for tickets to see kids trying their best! I paid to see real performers! People that knew what they were doing. This was not what they had promoted and we have smiles in the photos but we had no idea what we were walking into. I will never ever go see this company again anyone that ever asks me about the nutcracker I will be sure to remember this company and how bad the show was. Allot of people didn't even wait for the show to finish they just got up and left. Allot of people didn't not expect this show. I conversed with a few of them at the restaurant across the street allot of them couldn't believe it and was wondering how they could get a refund. Once the show was done they closed that theater so quick! I swear it was a bate and switch. Never again. The theater was nice but for the price we paid the show was definitely not worth it. Skip whit place go to Lincoln center. For the price we paid we should have just gone there. read more

I went to see Morrissey at this venue located in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. For those who don't k owe it's referred to as Spanish Harlem. With an array of ethnic, mostly Domincan foods and culture, it's a vibrant place to check out. We parked at supposedly the closest Icon parking for $10 ( with reserved discount online). The discount was pretty good cause it was entry after 6pm (you choose) and exit before 5:30 am the next day. Well it seemed a block or two from the venue but was more of like a 10-12 minute walk! Lol Security check in was a bit confusing. I approached the second set of security (2 people) upon which 1 woman checked the inside contents of my handbag. She pointed out that I couldn't keep the gum so I had to throw it out. The other woman tried explaining to me in very broken English that people may throw out the gum onto the floor causing a sticky mess for the clean up crew. So I took 2 pieces and chewed, as not to waste it. As I stood there (there was no one behind us) they told to us to go in already!! OMG, I was allowed to walk in with the gum in my mouth yet I had to throw out the remaining in the trash. It was quite comical. The United Palace was once a church now turned into an entertainment venue. It really is ornate and typically reminiscent of "NYC" theatre like decor and ambiance. Restrooms are located on the second level by going up the grand staircase. As old and beautiful as this building is, it comes with the typical flaws because of age. Make sure to hold onto the rail descending the stairs as I almost fell down. The steps edge must've caught on my shoe or maybe it was me?! Lol. The sound was awesome especially if you're seeing a band/singer perform. I guess the acoustics really is ideal for such type of performances. Bar and snacks were available at elevated prices (shocker!). And of course Morrissey merch sold. The pop up bar service served mostly canned alcohol with the exception of two cocktails with a whisky base (I don't like whiskey).. I paid for a Tangueray & soda cocktail which came in a can.($16). It was quite disappointing ; not the same if you actually took liquor and served in glass. I knew the price would be inflated but quite disappointed with the bar service. My friend had a Diet Coke ($6). I enjoyed the performance, and wished he sang more of the Smiths songs. If you really want to see a performance here get here, just keep in mind during the late hours walking back to you car or train/bus, be careful of you surroundings. read more

First came to this theater to film a tv show. Got to peek in all the nooks and cranny's and was truly blown away. It's stunning! Then a friend mentioned a free movie screening. Cassandro with an after talk by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and the principal actor, Gael Garcia Bernal. I signed up on the website and learned this is a reoccurring and spectacular thing here! The 1 train gets you close enough. You'll need to go through security, so no drinks or gum allowed. Dress code was fit for a movie night, though some went all out. The lobby is stunning. Very ornate and lush. There are theater priced drinks and snacks at the bar. There was a presenter, then the movie began. It was great! I'd probably not have seen it if not for this viewing. The talk after was intimate and impressive. Two greats just kicking back chatting! New York Presbyterian and Miranda's foundation chip in to bring these no cost, cultural experiences to New Yorkers in this historical and regal setting. How amazing is that! Everything was lovely, except the chairs. They hurt the booty. Aside from that...5 stars! read more

United Palace is one of the five Loew's wonder theaters. Located in Washington Heights and host to the Tony awards, this theater also hosts musical events and films. This review pertains to the historical happy hour tour. Tickets were 30 dollars each, with a four dollar and some cent service fee. This included the tour and a few beverages, such as canned wine, canned cocktails, beer, water, soda. Most people got at least two drinks, and at the end of the tour, the guide told us to help ourselves to whatever was left over, as it had already been struck from the budget, ha! Should also be noted that the proceeds go to maintaining the building. Our tour guide was funny and engaging. The venue is ornate, with a ton of different decor styles (this was the last of the theaters built, so they "threw the kitchen sink at it," in the guide's words. It was interesting to hear about the venue's life as a theater, it's rescue by a flamboyant preacher, its life as a church, and its return to glory, with the help of Hamilton wordsmith, Lin Manuel Miranda. The tour lasts about an hour and a half. You get to see most all parts of the theater and even go on stage. The Washington Heights neighborhood is full of Latin/Dominican restaurants and very walkable, so it would make a great evening with a walk and meal afterward. The United Palace Theater had a series of six movies for the public in 2022 which were a great experiences to attend. When we watched some older and other newer movies, the theater is a destination in itself one of the five Lowe's Wonder Theaters built in 1930. The other theaters opened in 1929 in Jersey City, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. These theaters are extremely ornate in their lobbies and theaters themselves. The United Palace is working to save their Wonder Morton organ. Go to restoring the wonder website to find out more. They had a fundraiser recently to restore one portion of the pipes by the NYTOS organization with Nick Myers. The theater also hosts a variety of other specialty events throughout the year. Jennifer Lopez screened her Netflix documentary and a lot more. The Miranda Foundation connected with Lin Manuel Miranda have done a lot to make the United Palace a destination in upper Manhattan. I love it here! I've been here for a few shows and performances. I've sat in the balcony. I've also sat in the first row. The acoustics in this space are amazing. I would highly recommend seeing a performance here. This was a movie theater when it first opened years ago. Recently, I came here for a movie series and Lin-Manuel Miranda and Spike Lee discussion. It was epic. This theater also has a free movie series that is fully sponsored by the Miranda family. I went to an event that was being hosted there. When entering I was in immediate awww of the place. It was huge and so beautifully decorated. It was all clean and well lit. The ushers and staff there were very friendly and quick to help. The place was very big on the inside that you don't realize how high you are when going to the balcony. A renovated theatre/event space that is 98 years old! I came here for a screening of When Harry Met Sally with a talk back by Billy Crystal and Marc Shaiman. It was a treat to see one of my favorite New York movies in this spectacular theatre. The gold interior and restored touches throughout the venue is a sight to see. I highly recommend to keep on a lookout for screenings because you will be able to see Lin-Manuel, since he is a significant donor in restoring this impressive space. I believe the screenings are occurring throughout the summer. One caveat, the security is a bit aggressive. The security are trained to literally open every bit of your belongings and display it. There is no consistency to what to bring and not bring. For example, I brought in my water bottle, and I was able to keep it, but others who did were not. Also, the popcorn is not fresh, but gourmet packaged by the autistic adults. The cookies and cream popcorn is delicious. It has chunks of oreo cookies and the popcorn is glazed with the white filling. Thoroughly enjoyed a Monday night of the movies! read more

A beautiful venue for the commencement exercise we have attended. Classical interiors, unimaginable regal décors and jaw dropping ceilings, walls and chandeliers. The seats and carpeting need some renovation though. Tight security was enforced during the guests check in which for me is a good thing. This place must have been being use for big performances events. Make sure to come early as looking for a parking spot is a killer. read more

Came for the screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Sat in left orchestra about 8 rows from front. This place gets 5 stars for two main reasons: 1. As others have mentioned, the amazing sound and acoustics. 2. Compared to other theaters on Broadway, the seats here are wider and comfortable. Think Southwest or American Airlines middle seat width plus another 1-1.5 inches. Don't have to bang elbows with your neighbors. Foot space isn't bad either. Overall felt luxurious for an old school theater. read more

I went here for the Symphony of the Goddesses concert and I was pleasantly surprised at the beautiful architecture of this building. I can't pin down the exact style of the building, but it seems to me to be some sort of fusion of baroque and gothic. The Symphony of the Goddesses concert was quite amazing and the hall thankfully had very good acoustics and the balcony seats were I was at was not bad at all. ATMOSPHERE: 9/10 The building gives a transformative atmosphere taking you from the city of New York to almost a different place and time entirely in a very good way. SERVICE : 7/10 The line for the concert was kind of absurd and it took forever to get everyone inside. I was earlier in line and still didn't make it inside for the concert until around 8:15 PM when it started at 8 PM so I missed some of the concert. PROBABILITY OF RETURN: 8/10 I would definitely return here for another venue. I had a great experience overall and would recommend it to anyone. OVERALL: 8/10 read more

My experience is based off one visit. My students were graduating from District 79 -Alternative High School and because we were graduating over 1200 students this was the best venue. Approaching the block the theater is located at a busy intersection one block from the A train and right nextdoor to the flea market and supermarkets. It seems pretty standard on the outside and then you walk in and you're immediately transported to something out of movie set in Spain or Italy. While the venue is a live music space it was a church led by Rev Ike and has since been restored to its original state with the most intricately beautiful work. There are huge chandeliers and light fixtures that make the place feel magical and the elaborate staircases are reminiscent of fairytales. The venue easily accommodates a little over 3,000 and is well staffed to host it's patrons. The bathroom and accompanying facilities are maintained in an immaculate manner and there is a heavy security presenwce without it feeling prison like. I cannot imagine how much it charged for a graduation but I could see weddings and other special occasions being held here. The only drawbacks are the lack of parking and the presence. It's literally on the sidewalk for such a beautiful venue. read more

When I saw this theater featured in a fight scene in Luke Cage I immediately knew I had to pay this historic movie palace a visit. I went during an open house so I had time to explore this architectural wonder. It's a beautiful theater. So many ornate details in the walls and ceiling. You feel like you are in a palace full of gold. They do have a film program called "Movies at the Palace" and I'm looking forward to seeing a film in this theater, the way films were meant to be seen! read more

You feel like you're walking into old world style entertainment. The kind of theater that takes you back to the Baroque era with columns, carvings, painting, lush fabrics, and slim seating. The theater is beautiful and large. It was a perfect venue for the graduation ceremony that we attended. The only thing I didn't care for upon entering the theater was the metal detectors operated by mall cops. The area of the palace is filled with great dining, and a nice mix of ethnicities. Okay, i'm re-doing the entire review. Tonight was my second time here in three days, and tonight just topped it. I mean, how can you top seeing Bjork here? By seeing Arcade Fire here, thats how! I will talk about what a religious experience I had here. Now I had Row BB seats, which are 3rd row (I know, figure that out). So I already had a great view of the stage. So Arcade Fire comes out and they do the first song, and they rock. So then Win Butler, the lead singer, tells everyone in the first few rows to come towards the stage to watch the rest of the show. HE WANTS US NEAR THE STAGE!!!!! so before you could say "intervention" i was bum rushing to get there. They use a church organ in a few of their songs. so the United Palace being a church during the week only added to the grandeur of the whole show. It was, maybe, the second best concert i've been to. Just an amazing, exuberant show. I won't describe the theatre, because the pictures speak for themselves. The sound was really off because there was alot of treble, and i sometimes did not hear the singing. It was that bad. But the decor of the theatre is quite breathtaking. Once inside the theatre, if you look at the ceiling, you will see a very detailed, very beautiful work of art. Its just a great place to see a show. and i would love to see how a church service goes down here. Bit of advice: You have to take the A train up here. So since everyone is getting out at 175th street, go the opposite way and exit at 177th street. There are less people, and you'll hit the theatre quicker than the other people. And unless someone says otherwise, the Will Call window is the booth on the outside of the theatre. So prepare to line up along the long, metal fence. read more

It's one of those rare New York moments where you are able to pop into a somewhat dusty place fairly frozen in time and long ago forgotten. It is jarring and unexpected, and giddy, and fun! That was my experience walking into the United Palace to watch The Allman Brothers rock out the house. I note so many people thus far love to complain about how far and out of the way Washington Heights is... Oh, so sorry, and quite frankly, too bad for you. If something is worth it, then traveling a bit out of the way is worth the charm of the experience. It's only northern Manhattan, not Montreal, after all. I very much enjoyed the over the top decor of the interior which is in high contrast with an otherwise staid and simple exterior. It was enjoyable to watch Allman fans walk around stoned and tripping over them/ourselves with mouths agape trying to make out all the dripping filigreed everything that seems to pulsate and ooze out of every wall. I was very surprised to discover how big the interior is and how most seats have perfect views of the stage and are comfortable on the backside. Sound was okay as well. I hope the church actually gets to a point where they invest some revenue generated by the Palace back into making it the sumptuous and decadent den of sin it must have been intended to be. You can tell that the faux walls were designed as screens to be back lit by flood lights. Perhaps in various hues of color? None of that seems to be functioning anymore. As for the concert, as soon as the lights came down, we were bathed in that glorious smoky smell of herbal refreshment. The music rocked, the audience enjoyed. All was definitely good. Bring on more concerts to this wonderful venue. There are enough snobby theaters in the city such as the Beacon to suit anyone's taste. And if you are snobby enough to complain that it isn't the Beacon, then don't go... buy the CD. I feel that for this time, the United Palace fit in perfectly with the tenor, tone and aura of the wonderful band that rocked it out. read more

Like the bastard brainchild of Ridley Scott and Louie The XIV this place is at once dark and post-apocalyptic and lush and decadent - and i love it! I saw Sigur Ros here (a mix of Bjork, NIN, and Portishead) and it was perfect - they have a beautiful and dark feel that just works with this place... It is beautiful, the seats are comfortable, they serve beer, wine and popcorn and the stage is incredible! I also liked the creches all over the walls with (from what i could tell) Buddha, Shiva and the virgin Mary in them..odd Other shows to see here Anything Icelandic, Anything Gospel, Rocky Horror(?), TOOL(!) etc - this is a cool Venue Points deducted for a Fu*$ up with overbooking which required me to stand for half of the show to find out who the hell was in the seat of the person in the seat of the person in the seat of the person in the seat of the person in my seat!!!! read more

4 stars for the stunning beauty inside. Problems: 0 alcohol being sold, yes a bummer but the real downer is the event staff. They huddle in the corners talking trash about the fans, blocking the path, huge attitudes and they ran around all night yelling at people to stay in their seats over and over, threatening to kick people out. Meanwhile the band is asking people to stand up and dance... It just took away from the experience a bit. Overall though loved the venue, it's just gorgeous and great for music. read more

I came here to see the hip hop nutcracker which was a super fun show. I will say that the theater is really well managed and maintained and it is really beautiful, its worth a visit to just see the place itself and perhaps to come for morning mass. They do a bunch of fun community activities as well as do tours of the theater. Dont bother to try and call them though, noone picks up the phone ever. You need to physically go there if you want to get anything or have a question that the internet cannot solve read more

Wow wow wow awesome! I was not expecting that! I've uploaded some pics and the venue is jaw droppingly amazing. Actually when I walked in there I said outloud "WOW!" and the randoni in front of my turned around and said "yes, thats the typical first time reaction". A few things to note. The only bathroom is upstairs. Beer is sold in the lobby but cannot be brought into the venue (understandable - afterall this is a church!!). The acoustics are great from anywhere building. One thing to note, may be the neighborhood. I felt totally safe at night, it was well lit and heavily trafficed. I've heard from other people that it is not a safe place to be - I could see that maybe they are right. But I was lucky enough not to feeling unsafe at anytime. Has anyone actually been for church services. I would love to know what it's like. Please let me know, I'm actually a little curious. Maybe curious enough to check it out one time. It'd be a good life story. read more

I'm gonna go see the Arcade Fire and the National here on May 7th. I hadn't heard of this venue unitil recently. Evidently, alot of hot acts have been recently booking this venue, such as Iggy Pop, Bjork, and Bloc Party all have or will play here soon. As far as reviewing this venue, (I figured I would, just to be the first), to pre-review it. As it's website shows, the venue was originally constructed in 1929 as a Loews theater, for jazz, vaudville, and movies. In 1969, it was purchased by a local church, and renovated inorder to invoke is former glory. The pictures of this place are absoluety stunning, i can't wait to check it out. The movie was really fun there were speakers, a raffle and a Q & A at the end. Apparently they did ask Sigourney Weaver to come but she was busy. My first & only show here so far was the Beck/MGMT show this month. The place towers above you on 175th Street and is actually a beautiful Church of sorts - take the A train here, it's the quickest way up I'd say! The show itself was awesome - I sat in the third row, saw perfectly and besides the people in the front row who basically congregated in front and acted as if it was their living room, I couldn't complain. The beer was definitely expensive - 7 bucks for a dixie cup! - and the only bathroom is upstairs - on the loge/balcony level. It made it really difficult for Orchestra seat people to get UP the stairs, through the crowd and into the bathroom. The bouncers were a little pushy after the show to get us moving out, but I still took my time. Overall, the place is a nice change from the typical venues downtown and midtown in the city. I wouldn't mind coming here again for a show. read more

Anyhoo, I'll cut and paste my review over anyway. Just so it's findable either way. I saw Bloc Party here in March, and Arcade Fire 2 days ago. This venue is a new classic. I might just be giving this place 5 stars because I am partial to these bands.. but even the fact that it's way up on 175th street isn't that big a deal for lazy ol me.. sooo... United Palace Theater features a classic proscenium arch stage, ornate ceilings and walls and a vibe that can only be described as unique. Our seats were wayyyy far from the stage both times.. and the view wasn't the best, but we still really enjoyed the performances. GREAT acoustics even at the back of the hall. Arcade Fire fit 10 people (comfortably too, mind you) on stage along with the works - chuch-like organs, xylophones, symbals, horns, violins.. they went all out. There were also live cameras filming individual members of the band, projecting their images on 5 round screens scattered about the stage. Lots and lots of space. By their grand finale, they fit about 200 jumping, dancing, screaming fans on the stage with them. This place rocks. Great venue, great sound. Don't let the distance disuade you. It's worth the ride.
