It's located in Brunswick County off a country road. The main highlight here is...yep, this building! There's not much else around, but for history buffs and philatelists, this quirky diminutive white washed edifice is worth taking a gander! Thousands of folks would agree since, come February, this P.O. gets flooded with sweethearts! Named for the first postmaster, William Valentine, who served in that capacity from 1887-1911, this building shares its space with a general store that will take you back in time. Willie Wright, who owned the store became the postmaster in 1947 and the two businesses merged. His work here was literally a "labor of love" and he started the heart stamped tradition that still lives today. Many stamp collectors and card senders make it a point to add this landmark stop to their list! One thing is for sure, this historic post office proves that Virginia, truly is, for lovers!

Built in 1940, its imposing brick facade, arched entryway with an eagle relief, reproduction vintage lampposts, and notable weathervane make for an striking effect. Inside, you can still see the antique brass post boxes and marble walls. Although I love the vintage feel of this post office, it could definitely use updated flooring and valances. It seemed a tad dingy in there. This post office serves about 7,200 residents in the Blackstone community. There's a ramp for easy access and plenty of parking. They are open for retail M-F 9:00-5:00, and Saturday 9:00-11:00, with the lobby open 24/7. The usual services are offered, however, no passport service. Not much else is nearby save a bank, the railroad tracks, a small park featuring a commemorative cannon, and a few other buildings and shops. It's such a tiny but friendly town! The postmaster and I talked about the price of stamps going up to $.60, and she said soon to be $.63, to which I responded that I still find it fascinating that the postal service can send a letter from one place to another for even that small price... Sophia usually handled that arena by mostly ordering online, but we were running short so I was given the task to pick some up. It was right after I got off work so I stopped by on the way home. Foot traffic was very minimal which resulted in no wait at all. I actually stood in line for no longer than 15 seconds. As stated earlier, it was for buying a book of stamps. To my surprise, the cost for the book was over $14. Back when I used to ship items off by mail, stamps cost under $10. It's crazy to see the prices go up each year. Unfortunately, we have to accept the changes and move on. Besides the price increase, the transaction went smooth as usual. I know this location will always come in handy for yours truly.
