The postmaster and I talked about the price of stamps going up to $.60, and she said soon to be $.63, to which I responded that I still find it fascinating that the postal service can send a letter from one place to another for even that small price... It's a railroad town and my hubby said it looked like a town you'd build from a train set! The post office sits right at the Sussex County/Greenville County Line. The post master, Roger, was very friendly and helpful! I purchased some post card stamps here, but no postcards available... I'm headed to emporia to see if they have any! This, IMO, was the postmaster's arbitrarily made personal choice...not a sound one. My mail has markedly ceased for the past 2 weeks with the exception of junk mail. First class mail is not being put in my box. I know this because my father sent a card that I have yet to receive. Fact. They can expect to have a formal complaint filed, shortly. It seemed a tad dingy in there. This post office serves about 7,200 residents in the Blackstone community. There's a ramp for easy access and plenty of parking. They are open for retail M-F 9:00-5:00, and Saturday 9:00-11:00, with the lobby open 24/7. The usual services are offered, however, no passport service. They just got their holidays stamps in, so stock up! And check out the vintage postcard once available in the Virginia Post Office series.

I loved the vintage brass mail boxes, the wood paneling and the iron bars on the cashier window. The town of Courtland was previously named Southampton Courthouse and Jerusalem. Former postmistress Fannie Barrett is credited with suggesting the town's name to be changed to Courtland. Courtland has a rich history dating back to 1750, and is known for the trial of Nat Turner in 1831. The hours are M-F 8:30-4:30, Saturday 10-12:00, and the window closes for lunch from 1:30-2:30. John Ricks is listed as the postmaster at this branch which serves about 4,300 residents.
