Some of the…read morelettering was askew and worn, which is an easy fix so I wish they would take more pride in the exterior. The inside was clean, well stocked and ready for business, however. I loved the vintage brass mail boxes, the wood paneling and the iron bars on the cashier window. The town of Courtland was previously named Southampton Courthouse and Jerusalem. Former postmistress Fannie Barrett is credited with suggesting the town's name to be changed to Courtland. Courtland has a rich history dating back to 1750, and is known for the trial of Nat Turner in 1831. The hours are M-F 8:30-4:30, Saturday 10-12:00, and the window closes for lunch from 1:30-2:30. John Ricks is listed as the postmaster at this branch which serves about 4,300 residents.

It asks you to imagine an educational institution that disappeared from the landscape long ago, leaving only this quiet plaque to hint at the classrooms, ambitions, and daily routines that once filled the spot. The marker reads, "Littleton College. Chartered in 1883 as Central Institute and in 1887 as Littleton Female College. Burned 1919. Was located here." It is marker number E-28 and it was erected in 1940 by the State Historical Commission. The school was Methodist‑affiliated, created by local leaders for the intellectual, moral, and religious education of young women. Reverend James Manley Rhodes served as its guiding figure, returning in 1889 to expand the campus after briefly leaving for another post. The college offered a two year curriculum in subjects ranging from chemistry and physics to languages and history, and by 1908 it enrolled hundreds of students from across the South and beyond. It is in a parking lot and there is plenty of room to stop to read the marker. On both sides, it reads "Willis Alston, jr. 1769-1837. US Congressman, 1799-1815 and 1825-1831, as a Jeffersonian Republican; North Carolina Representative and Senator. Grave 4 1/2 miles southeast." Online, there is more information. Alston was born near here into a politically influential family, rose to prominence as a staunch Jeffersonian and long-serving legislator at both the state and national levels. While still a student at Princeton in 1791, he was elected to the North Carolina House of Commons, later serving in the state Senate and then in Congress from 1799 to 1815, and again from 1825 to 1831. Known for his alliance with John C. Calhoun and the "War Hawks" during the War of 1812, Alston also held a seat on the powerful Ways and Means Committee. In state politics, he advocated for internal improvements, banking reform, and investigated financial misconduct. He married twice and operated a large plantation in Halifax County, where he owned over 100 slaves. Alston died in 1837 and was buried at his estate, "Butterwood" near his birthplace. And Danielle referred us to another minuscule post office up the road in Meredithville! This one in Warfield, (which used to be a railroad town but has since seen a decrease in population which according to statistics from 2024 is now 34) has vintage brass post offices boxes and is neat as a pin! I love the white exterior with brick red shutters and a reddish shingled roof. The flag was at half mast due to the passing of Jimmy Carter. Hours 12:15-4:15 M-F, 9:00-12:45 Saturday

Their dedication is incredible, and we are SO grateful for their help and time! It gives us all peace of mind knowing that they are their for us when needed most if an emergency occurs! The Drewryville post office became damaged when a fire in an adjacent building caught fire in 2018. Plans to renovate and reopen the post office have been underway since and I'm sure the 750+ residents would love to see this historic landmark refurbished soon. There's been some indication that a new building may house the post office, but it would be a shame to move it from this beloved spot. If you get a chance to come to this small town, you'll want to take the time to visit this unique structure. We loved peering through the windows at the antique fixtures, the brass mailboxes, the marble counters... incredible. Post offices services are temporarily being offered at a small mobile van across the street from this building. It has minimal hours and it's rather inconvenient to the residents. Here's hoping this post office rises from the ashes and returns to its epic former glory!
