But it's okay, I found another one soon after that whole ordeal. Joe, the lead clerk, is funny as heck and will give it to you straight. He has offered up some valuable resources to me, a nerd who at first admittedly had no idea what he was doing. Andrew is the man, super friendly and definitely has management material written all over him if he's not at that level yet. There are a few other clerks whose names escape me, but this team is solid. Did I mention the mail carriers? The ones who deliver to my apartment gave me their numbers so I can call them if I ever have any issues with the nerdy crap being delivered to me. I'm sure the eBay sellers I purchase from appreciate that... To my tall friend, and I'll get your name again next time - save me a sealed ETB if you ever find 2 of something cool!!!!! Not enough good things to say about this place. Selling on eBay has shown me the other side of customer interactions... it is frustrating when a customer is accusatory when you have your bases covered, but I guess that's human nature? Idk.... I judge the level of customer service by how I feel about my interaction with the postal service employees. Unfortunately, this particular location is hampered from being high-performing by at least one employee (caucasian woman) that I interacted with this morning at the front. Her advice regarding how to ship my item was satisfactory (reason for getting 2 stars). However, her general tone felt negative and cynical. I became confused on the timing of the payment for my shipping material, and then she became condescending publicly, which of course made me feel humiliated (even for the brief moment that it occurred). I imagine the local USPS leadership that will read this review will know exactly who I am talking about based on my description of the employee and the interaction (apologies for not getting a name). They will have to weigh the importance of customer service relative to technical skill as it relates to the successful operation of a USPS location. Given that she is likely technically sound, will you just "look away" from the negative behavior?

Local mills including this one employed 600 people amongst them and produced almost 55 million feet of lumber in the 1850's. When the Union Army descending upon Pensacola, General Braxton Bragg ordered any Machinery that might be useful to the union to be destroyed. Machinery from the mill was loaded upon barges and evacuated. It is important that we remember what once was, what formed the history of where we stand. I seek out spots like this. What is a pawn spots like these that I stand in the shadow of yesterday and it has spots like these that will guide us to our tomorrows.

It looks like a smokestack. The marker reads, "The Chimney is the only trace of what once was the first major industrial belt on the Gulf Coast, a string of antebellum wood mills and brick factories. The chimney represents the lumber industry of the Florida Panhandle. As the lumber industry prospered in the 1850s, local mills employed 600 people and produced almost 55 million feet of lumber. The bricks in the base of the chimney bear the mark of J. Gonzalez", showing that they were produced at the local brick plant of James Gonzalez. The chimney was part of the steam power plant for the Hyers-Knowles Mill. In March 1862, General Braxton Bragg was evacuating the Confederate forces holding Pensacola when Confederate Secretary of War Judah P. Benjamin gave the order to "Destroy all machinery private and public, which could be useful to the enemy; especially disable the sawmills in and around the Bay." The machinery from the mills was loaded onto barges which were moved into Escambia Bay. On March 10th a thunderstorm and large waves sank the barges. That same night the Hyer-Knowles Mill was burned, and all that is left is the chimney." Yes, Florida saw some conflicts between the Confederacy and the Union during the Civil War. They tell you once your out there to down load the national park service app (NPS) to get a guided tour... But it's not too easy. You need a good signal and to be able to down load the maps before you go.. Because inside the bunkers you will lose signal. Plus I didn't find the app intuitive so standing out in the hot sun trying to figure it out was a pain. Plan ahead! Walk back in time with immersive history.

The rangers and volunteer at Fort Pickens did such a good job answering questions about this place - they truly enjoy their jobs and pass on that enthusiasm. We enjoyed the history and the fact that they have been able to save so much - making this an enjoyable afternoon. (Just remember to wear socks and shoes - lots of ants!)
