It is bordered to the north by Montague County which is adjacent to Oklahoma. So we're pretty far north in East Texas. Wise County was founded in 1856 and is named after Virginia Congressman Henry A. Wise, who has supported annexation of Texas by the United States. He was elected governor of Virginia in 1856. J. Riely Gordon's design of the Wise County Courthouse was similar but not identical to his design for the Ellis County Courthouse https://www.yelp.com/biz/ellis-county-courthouse-waxahachie?hrid=eBGUKM-BrvGmolUsyqKK0w. It was built in 1896 and illustrates Romanesque Revival characteristics that are found in a number of Gordon's Texas courthouses. This includes the use of turrets, a tower, segmented massing and fine ashlar masonry of contrasting textures and hues. The central tower, with its projecting balconies, setbacks and dormers, crowns the building. Particularly distinctive is the fine masonry work throughout the structure. The exterior walls are of rusticated pink granite, while the main columns are of polished pink granite. Unfortunately, the building was closed for the night when I was here at 5:30pm on Saturday. We did our homework in detail to be sure we had all the documents needed. The rest was on the DPS. Effecient(!) UPBEAT - Personable - Respectful..............ALL making for a pleasant experinece. The ladies working today were ALL taking care of business -keeping things rolling along. 'Cooperativeness' from the staff spills over onto the visitors. Five stars - hands down. In this case it's the Town Hall building for the once tiny town of Prosper. Not long ago this was literally a tiny north Texas Town,exactly like the 1000s dotting the flat prairie of this part of the state. As development moves north at an ever more rapid pace,these tiny communities are being transformed overnight. It is critical with this type growth that responsible citizens are in from the start with rock solid civic planning. Once the infrastructure is planned and built out,it's impossible to retreat and redo. Setting the foundation for what's to come is a make it or break it proposition. On this day,I had taken my High School Junior Grandson to breakfast. Afterward I proposed we get on the Dallas north toll road and see where it ends. It still ends in roughly Prosper where staging is taking place to begin the extension even further north. Unprecedented growth continues to take place. I turned up towards the little town and as we passed the Town Hall building,I proposed we go in and take a look. Little did my grandson know that I'd disguised a civics lesson for him in the form of a city government visit. Ha,he thought he was missing school! Happy Birthday! As we entered the building I was truly amazed at the quality of construction. Well planned and thought out with top quality materials from floor to ceiling. Display cases reviews the history of small town Prosper in a museum quality way. We were greeted by a lovely representative of the city that was very helpful in our understanding of the area. If you're out and about seeing what's happening in our ever changing world,I highly recommend you stop in and appreciate this lovely structure and budding city government.
