It reads, "Graves of Thomas Wolfe & "O. Henry," authors; Zebulon B. Vance, governor; Thomas L. Clingman and Robert R. Reynolds, U.S. senators. One-half mile west" Riverside Cemetery, established in 1885 in Asheville's Montford Historic District, spans eighty-seven acres and offers a tranquil setting rich in architectural, historical, and botanical significance. Originally founded by the Asheville Cemetery Company and later maintained by the City of Asheville, it contains over 13,000 graves, 9,000 monuments, and a dozen mausoleums ‐ with guided tours and genealogical services still available. The cemetery is the final resting place of notable figures, reflecting more than a century of western North Carolina's civic and cultural legacy. Designated a Buncombe County Tree Preserve in 1997, Riverside remains a solemn yet vibrant public space where the region's history is quietly honored. It reads, "In 1787 fifty acres of land were purchased from James Adair for founding of Rutherford Town, which serves as the second county seat." Adair was born in Ireland and immigrated to the colonies in the early 18th century. He became a noted Indian trader, author, and planter, working extensively with the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Catawba tribes. Adair's writings, especially his 1775 book History of the American Indians, attempted to link Native American origins to the lost tribes of Israel--a theory now discredited but influential in its time. In 1786, Adair sold 50 acres of land along Cleghorn Creek to a committee tasked with relocating the Rutherford County seat from Gilbert Town. The marker reads, "Elisha Mitchell, 1793-1857. Scientist and professor. Died in attempt to prove this mountain highest in eastern U.S. Grave is at the summit, 285 yds. S." Online, there is more information. "On June 27, 1857, Elisha Mitchell, exploring the Black Mountain range, slipped and fell to his death in a deep pool at the bottom of a sixty-foot waterfall. Search parties were organized (by Zebulon Baird Vance, future governor and United States senator for North Carolina, among others), and the body was discovered several days later by "Big Tom" Wilson, noted bear hunter and woodsman. Mitchell's death "cast a shadow of profound grief over the entire state."" The marker is in the parking lot summit of Mount Mitchell and you will spot it next to the the trail to the summit.
