On October 11, 2025, there was quite a bit of construction going on in the area. This road construction did not deter us from making a pit stop and walking our dog around for a bit. My youngest threw away trash that someone had stuck in the arching sign. Proud of her for that. The locomotive donated to this park was built back in 1906. Clovis's railroad heritage lives on... you will definitely hear and feel active trains just a hop and a skip nearby.

Fort Sumner is a few minutes away with the "official" Billy the Kid's gravesite along with some other Wild West & Manifest Destiny activities. Roswell is the capitol for UFO phenomena, but an ideal base to explore the Carlsbad Caverns, Historic NM town of Lincoln/Ruidoso, Alamogordo & the Nuke Bomb Testing Facilities (White Sands). I visited the refuge in early January of 2011, to see the sandhill cranes. They have about 17,500…read morethis year according to their website, but I only saw a few hundred from a distance. We hiked across Pauls Lake, one of the salty and pretty much entirely dry (at this point) playa lakes. There are 3 main playa lakes, Goose, White, and Pauls. Bring binoculars. I also saw some Western Meadowlarks, a large raptor of some kind (about 2 feet long), American Kestrels, and prairie dogs. You can hike on pretty much the entire preserve, but there is cactus and rattlesnakes, although we didn't see any snakes. They have a picnic and tent camping area, and there are no fees to get into the park. They have a sign-in point at the headquarters, but there weren't any people there. There are chemical toilets at the picnic area and near Pauls Lake, which is a little farther down the highway. There also was another scenic overlook/picnic area on the very end of the preserve, which you can enter off the highway. Scattered around the property are signs that talk about points of interest with visitors. Overall I enjoyed the wild and lonely scenery but didn't see too much wildlife. Maybe because it was kind of cold out. The premises appeared well cared-for by the refuge staff, we saw them repairing a bridge on the picnic area trail. There also were various burned areas of grass which they do to remove undesirable plants and to maintain the prairie ecosystem. If you visit I recommend sturdy shoes, binoculars, a picnic lunch (there are no nearby eateries), and to print a map beforehand. There was one available online but I didn't see any in the lobby area.

Okay, usually I can't really stand a lot of Peace Officers, especially having been one myself lol…read more It's a huge rarity that I get the Police Dept called on myself, yes yes but I did I know. It's no fun when you get the fuzz called upon you. Now I'm a 100% Service Connected Army Veteran and when the Police showed up to my door it was within my rights as to why they showed up, it's not like I was in trouble or anything. When the officer showed up he was so friendly and his back up was very approachable as well as professional. The main officer who was the investigating officer that is, I would say that his field investigative skills surpassed that of any other Peace Officer I've ever encountered. He was thorough but at the same time didn't make me feel uncomfortable. The officer noticed a few of my Veteran Affairs Medications sitting around and asked me questions about that but not in a judgmental mannerism in the least bit. This guy was so awesome, I felt like pulling him in for a hug lol. Now being ex Military Police, Federal Police, and having worked with DOJ, the job of an officer is to be what's called a "Field Social Worker"....and what that means is that your supposed to conduct your duties as a Field Social Worker, just how it sounds folks. He could have brought me in, but instead he was not arrogant to show off his authority in power and actually empathized with me and the other suspects. He conducted his field Social Worker capabilities that have surpassed what I've encountered both in Military and Civilian Law Enforcement aspects. The dispatch also gets a huge high five. Now, I'm from the State of California and being an Officer from California I worked side by side with dispatch and the dispatch here in Muleshoe, Tx was so friendly and didn't bring arrogance to the table. She actually didn't talk while I talked, she actually listened rather than making you feel like crap for calling in the first place. This is a huge huge rarity folks. I wouldn't be making a Yelp review unless if they had made a huge impression on me. I can tell that the love of the Father was with this Peace Officer, no lie. For you folks whom are GOD driven out there that is. I'd like to give a huge shout out and hand of support to these Officers that were here a few weeks ago and to include the Sheriffs Dept who showed up on the scene as back up for the Lead Investigator that night. Muleshoe P.D. as well as the Sheriffs Dept gets 5 Stars by far!!! Keep up the GREAT work my new friends. Be safe out there too.

I'm sorry I didn't get his name, because he was really nice. He did something I later realized was such a good idea. My dog was going crazy, but the officer wouldn't talk to me through the window---he politely insisted I come to the door, and asked me to step outside because the barking was so loud. If I'd been held hostage, or in an abusive situation----instead of a forgetful old woman!---that officer would have been perfectly placed for a rescue! I really felt served and protected! TYVM, CPD!!
