I was visiting the area from the Diocese of Fresno, and I attended this parish as a visitor…read more Recognizing that "they do things differently" there is not a sufficient criticism, there were a few things that made me doubt the orthodoxy of this parish. First, the design of the church. The seats had no kneelers, and nobody kneeled during the consecration. In addition, one of the first things I do when I enter a new church is to look for the tabernacle so that I can genuflect toward the reserved sacrament; it must have been there (it was a Catholic church, after all), but for the life of me I could never find it. My most serious concern was the behavior of the parish administrator during the mass, a religious sister, not a priest. The priest is in the place of Christ during the mass, and should be focus. This sister stood on the altar podium during the entire mass, drawing a second center of attention from the priest. She led most of the prayers from there. It felt like I was watching a tug-of-war between her and the priest. More disturbing, at one point she modified the words of the Roman Missal to make them more "inclusive" (and presumably more in line with her personal preferences). (She changed the prayer, "May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands .. and the good of all his holy Church" to "May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands ... and the good of all God's holy Church."). I understand what she was doing, and I'm sorry, but the words of the mass are not hers to change.

I can not and will not attend a church that leads by lying to people. Don't let your youth pastor…read morego and tell the teens that were very attached to him that he was "chosen for another position". Don't let other pastors/leaders go and tell the congregation that they were called to other paths. This church treats everyone as a number. You walk into a huge auditorium and are NEVER welcomed. You can walk around after service and no one speaks to you. if you attend and do not come for several weeks - you aren't missed.

I was passing through Albany but wanted to still cover my weekly obligation on a Saturday night, so I found this chapel with masstimes.org. I was a bit shocked that it was a storefront chapel in a strip-mall, as I mentally associate those types of churches with the Protestants, but when I went inside, I really felt the power of the church. The inside is pretty Spartan, if you can ever call a Catholic church Spartan, and the priest was a humble fellow who gave a damn-good homily. I was also impressed by the fact that there were locals who seemed to know each other's names. Everywhere I went I saw people calling out to each other in a familiar manner. What a nice chapel.
