The hard part about this is Dr. Scruggs is a great Chiropractor. The problem is that he is extremely unprofessional. He is consistently late for appointments when explicitly asked to be on time. He uses profanity constantly, has said derogatory things about my body, and even touched my face saying I have a wide nose. He has always been a bit crass but I think some things in his personal life changed and his behavior has only gotten worse. I get anxiety when I know I am going to come in for an appointment because of his interpersonal skills but he is good at what he does and I have found it hard to find another good Chiropractor. Dr. Scruggs has been my chiropractor for over 18 years. He is very knowledgeable and always gives me plenty of time listening to my back injuries. I have been seeing Dr. Scruggs for chiropractic care for over 5 years and have always had positive experiences. I trusted him so much that I brought my 12-year-old daughter to him for care last year. This changed yesterday, June 5, 2023 at 10:15am. I was lying on my side to have my hips adjusted, which I have had done dozens of times. Normally, Dr. Scruggs places my knee on his thigh but this time he placed my knee against his genitals. This was not an accidental brush that was quickly corrected. It was an intentional placement of my knee against his genitals. I was shocked and was trying to process what I was experiencing when he had me turn to the other side and did the same thing with my other knee. This gross violation of trust shocked me and I left the office in a haze. I have filed a complaint against him with the Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Dr. Scruggs needs to know that he cannot get away with this. It is hard for me to believe that I am the first patient he has violated in this manner. If something like this has happened to you or anyone you know, I urge you to also file a complaint at www.chiro.ca.gov/consumers/complaint.shtml. Having found Chris by circumstance of working nearby and having a horrible back issue, I have now been going to him for years and recommending him as much as I can - always resulting in appreciation. I have been going to Universal Chiropractic since I was a weee youngin and I have to say that this is one of the best places around. When I was a little girl, my mother used to tell me that angels existed and that they were all around us.. I started losing hope in the things she said after a terrible car accident that happened to me a few years back. I went through the worse "treatment" of my life with a chiropractor who I put all my trust in just to see myself withering away. I want to tell you all, that since I stepped foot in Dr. Christopher Scruggs office, my hope, my personality, my health, my life has new meaning. Dr. Scruggs was able to reverse malpractice, get me out of pain (nerve and physical) after two car accidents. I went from not being able to exercise to running for an hour on the beach 3-4 times a week, being able to walk up sand dunes and going back to hiking, one of my favorite things in the wold. The pain got so bad that I had to go to the ER and got some Robaxin and Pain pills. Finally, I called Dr. Scruggs and I am not even kidding after 2 days I was back to normal. Went back for a few follow-ups and he adjusted me so well. I was back on the basketball court in a few days and follow the exercises he told me to do. I've been going to Dr. Scruggs for years for chronic neck pain, and have had two different boyfriends see him regularly for chronic back pain and pinched nerves. I'm a massage therapist, so I can mostly take care of the boyfriend's aches at home, but when I get out of my depth, I pack him up to see Scruggs. Dr. Scruggs knows his stuff, and his treatment is more quality, less quantity, which means you'll be in and out in less than an hour. When you come in for a visit, it typically goes like this: You get situated in a treatment room, a nurse/therapist/etc. will take an evaluation of your pain/injury and decide if you need X-rays (likely not). Then she lies you down on the table and hooks up the TENS electronic pulse massage sponges to your most pain-ridden area. After a few minutes under the TENS, you'll start to feel all the tight muscles in your body let go. Afterward, she'll come back in and use a G5 personal massage wand on your entire body, after which you are ready to be adjusted. I've always seen Dr. Scruggs Sr., as he's known for his gentle touch (plus 40 some years of experience). Scruggs doesn't just come in and start throwing your limbs around-- he tells you exactly why you are in pain, what he's going to do to fix it, and why it is going to feel better. Word around the office is that his son Chris is also good, but a bit rougher/more intense, so you just have to make your own call on which of them would be best for you. I've never been in to see Scruggs and not left feeling better. When the boyfriend and I went in this morning, he could barely stand or move without howling in pain. By the time we left he was able to walk and bend over enough to put on his own shoes without pain. At $40 per treatment, I call that a bargain. **NOTE: The office only accepts cash payments, checks too, I believe. No credit or debt cards, though.** read more

The name of this review should be "Three Times A Charm." The first time I met Chris we locked horns over the fact that I did not fill in my marital status, as I did not feel my marital status had anything to do with my back pain. The second time we argued over the fact that I had not been in to see him in many months and he wanted me to fill in my paperwork all over again (which he still did the third time too, which annoyed me because if none of the information is different, I don't see WHY I have to fill in the documents all over again).....But onto the good part of the review.... I was taking care of a friends dog. While walking the dog, a squirrel ran by and he took off - yanking me right off my feet and pulling my lower back out. When I went in to see Chris, I could barely move.....They used electric current pads on me, a massager, a paddle to break down the scar tissue over my hip joint and Chris adjusted me. I left feeling like I had a whole new back! Chris was REALLY attentive, informative, helpful and effective. So despite our bickering on our first few "dates," I'll never go to anyone else now. I've seen three other chiropractors and none of them could figure out my alignment issues with my knee, hips and upper back. I thought it was from that dinosaur attack as a child, but Chris discovered what the real cause was. This was something I was paying other chiros tons of money to bandaid. Seriously though, he spends tons of time with you and talks really fast about rhomboids and flexers, etc., but he knows his shit. After experiencing a traumatic car accident I was on the brink of losing hope, thinking I would have to live with this neck and back pain forever at 27, but Dr. Scruggs brought me back to life with adjustments, traction, myofascial release and he taught me therapeutic exercises that I can do at home to deal with the pain. A friend of mine who lived local to Dr. Scruggs raved about how she completely trusted him to adjust her. I've literally been to at least a dozen different chiropractors over the years and I've had at least a hundred adjustments. I was in town so decided to give this guy a try. HANDS DOWN THE BEST CHIROPRACTOR I've ever been to! And looking at the reviews here, I can tell I'm not the only one who feels this way. He has done things in just two appointments that no chiropractor has ever done for me. Broke up scar tissue from old injuries including one from almost 40 years ago, got my hips into alignment, got my shoulders and neck into alignment, and my range of motion which has been very limited for decades is now almost at 100%. He's thorough and explains everything showing with graphs and charts all the different parts of the body that are being impacted by the misalignments and what he's going to do to get it back into alignment. I'll admit some of these adjustments hurt because I've been out of alignment for decades (despite the many Chiropractic adjustments I have received even up to recently before seeing him) but I could tell he knew what he was doing and because my friend trusted him, I went with it. I've received Chiropractic care, off and on, for maybe twenty years, through perhaps a total of four doctors. Fairly recently, my Health Insurance Plan began covering chiropractic care (amazing!). When I injured my back a year ago, I figured I'd investigate what options I had through my health plan--options which included a LARGE list of doctors to choose from. Long story short, I chose the closest office, and.... LUCKED OUT *BIG TIME*! Universal City Chiropractic is a (rare) family-run business, where the primary doctors are William Scruggs Sr., and his two sons, Billy and Chris. Their hip, yet family-friendly office features a support staff that is so friendly and spot-on, appointment time-wise, it's an actual joy to visit a doctors office. (Many on staff are also trained massage therapists and specialists in related "spinal care" treatments.) Billy has been my doctor from day one. He's cool as can be--hilarious, highly informative (helpful if you're "new" to Chiropractic), super efficient, and seemingly adaptive to all personality types (the age range of patients runs the gamut). I would consider myself a "veteran" of Chiropractic care, in some ways. Billy's treatments have *easily* been top-drawer, in my experience, as a patient requiring back treatments, and his repertoire of ways to get specific areas "cracked" into place astonishes me. (Every other chiropractor I've ever been to has always done the same effective stuff, but Billy does this, and then some--I jokingly refer to it as "custom cracking.") I've also never had a doctor give me such an assortment of helpful back exercises and stretches--things which I can do on my own, to help speed up my recovery process. And any questions I've ever had (about what led to my injury, the precise reasons I'm feeling the discomfort/pain that I am, etc.), is always explained in clear language, reinforced by X-Rays and anything else that helps me get a clearer picture--for either simple understanding, or future prevention. Oh yeah, and they have PARKING. I think there are about 6-7 spaces directly in front their offices (literally 2-3 steps from the entryway), and there's tons of metered street parking, as well as nearby residential areas to park. I have been using yelp for well over five years and this is the first time I felt the genuine urge to write a review. I actually crawled into Dr. Chris Scrugg's office couple of days ago unable to walk or move properly from a back injury that I sustained while at the gym. The lady at the front squeezed me into Chris' schedule even though it was a super busy day that day. Thank you so very much for that! This was the second time that I was seeing Chris. I was once there almost an year ago for a similar problem but not serious like this time. He was very friendly, courteous and cool. He immediately recognized me; put me at ease right away. He took such good care of me, took x-rays and gave the electrotherapy, cold packs and g5 massager. Then he adjusted the back and gave the stretches and I immediately felt the difference. It was as if he popped things back into place again. Trust me the care was god sent! He saw me for another session on the same day in the afternoon and my situation felt so much better. I could walk straight again!! He went over the x-rays and explained to me problems with my posture and preventive measures to mitigate future issues with exercises and stretches. I am still under his care and just wanted to express my gratitude here on Yelp. I do not go through the insurance company as I have a very high deductible plan and for the services that he offers and for what he charged me is more that reasonable. Chris simply is the best! What can I say about Dr. Chris Scruggs other than AWESOME. I few years back, I fell victim to sciatica/disc issues. I spent a whole year with one chiropractor just up the street. Great guy with a wonderful bedside manner. Unfortunately, his treatment did absolutely nothing for me. Could not stand or walk for very long without intense pain and numbing down my left leg. Decided that it was ridiculous for me to go on paying for treatment that did nothing. Then a friend referred me to Chris. My first visit involved a detailed diagnosis, massage, traction & comprehensive adjustment. I'm usually there for about 30-45 minutes. With my previous chiro, I was there for maybe 3-5 minutes. Revolving door. Within a month, I noticed definite relief. After 6 months, the difference is night and day. In addition to my comprehensive visits, Chris has instructed me on various stretches and exercises that have led to an improved quality of life. On a pain scale of 1-10, I went in with a 10. I'm now probably at a 3. I'm realistic about my condition. Back pain is something I'm going to have to learn to live with. But with Dr. Chris Scruggs at the helm of my treatment, I've definitely learned to give back pain a swift kick to the ass. This man is the real deal. On top of that, he's a great guy to just chat with. If you're having issues, the best thing you can do for yourself is to visit Chris, his dad and the rest of his wonderful staff at Universal City Chiropractic. I was at the end of my rope.
