Pablo and Angel did a fine job, but Kiera has blown me away the past four times I've gotten my hair cut here. She is very personable, chill, and knows hairstyles well. She put the thought in to explain what she thinks looks good based on my requests and even knows military regulations well. On the business side, this barbershop is very professional and has a nice atmosphere. I love their sign out front that says customers have the right to choose their preferred barber. You get what you pay for--this cheap place bases its customer service on hair type. If you have fine or longer hair, more time is spent crafting your cut. If you have shorter hair, less time is spent on detail crafting your cut. A standard cut costs $22; you must realize you get what you pay for. I have gone about five or six times, and none of the staff ever remember me. I also get a different person each time I enter for a cut. If you're looking for consistency or establishing a rapport, then this is not a good fit. read more

THE BLACK AND WHITE: There's plenty of haircuttery's around the U-District, however I keep coming back here mainly because of their affordable price and little to no wait. Genuinely the worst haircut I've ever gotten. The 3 stars is because I usually go to Kiera and shes amazing, but I was desperate for a cut and she wasnt in. I went in and told the guy that i didnt want anything off the top, i just wanted the sides cut and blended to the top. He said okay and before I could even stop him, he took trimmers to the top of my head. The first picture is how my hair looked going in and the second is how I left. The Ave truly is able to suit a need for everything, and haircuts are no exception. The only other place I knew of to get haircuts around here was in the old HUB that got demolished. I had just never come here because I had no need to; haircuts were usually done at home for me. But I really needed a haircut one day and thought I might as well knock out a review at the same time. Prices are $17 normally and $14 with military ID. I used that to get a high and tight hairstyle. After a few rounds of trimming, I was ultimately pretty happy with what I had gotten. Prices are somewhat inflated and I could have had the same thing done without paying as much elsewhere. But this is just a pretty standard barber shop anyway. read more

When my hair gets long it becomes curly and I look like a doofus. This is a bad thing because is denigrates the usual appearance of brilliance that the "5 on the top, 2 on the sides" buzz shows off to the public. So I go here, to University Ave Barbering and Styling. This is a place designed to cut hair for men. You're in and out in moments, you've got a bunch of dudes with crazy army tattoos cutting it short, and they only take cash. Cash is manly. Of course they also take check, and check is not manly, but no one uses checks anymore. So cash. Never once had a bad experience or someone miss with the scissors and cut my ear (which happened thrice at Supercuts back in the day), and on more than one occasion you get to hear the guys there talking about the weirdest things ever. One hair cutter who appears to be gone now was trying to convince everyone he used to drink chicken milk. They made cheese out of it back in his home country. Alright then. read more

I asked for an inch and a half of hair to be cut, and mentioned that I tend to keep it a little long because of my cowlicks. The barber proceeded to ignore everything I told him, cut my hair to a half inch or so, and style it with gel. I now get to wait a loooong time before I actually have hair long enough to go to a real barber and get it fixed. Service was excellent, people were friendly. However, there was this sign on the wall, that was from management and to the barbers. It detailed how they had no personal days outside of Saturday and Sunday, very little vacation, and a doctors note was not enough proof for a sick day, because (paraphrasing) "If you can get to the doctor to get a sick note, you're not sick enough to skip work." Got Judy the first time and she did a good job and then a few weeks later an older gentleman (forgot his name but I believed opened this place and now his son is running things) cut my hair and did a decent job too. Both very friendly and personable. Yesterday I went there to get my summer cut (blade setting 1 all around) and decided to give Pablo a try. I was hesitant at first having read previous reviews but I was glad I did. Not sure what happened in the past but his service was money and his cut was on point. My first hair cut in Seattle. And my best ever. EVER. Walked in and was merrily greeted by a barber engaged with another customer, but he told me I'd be helped in just a second. Time waited: 4.13 seconds. A kind looking gentlemen had me sit down and proceeded to work. Maybe I'm totally blown away because my old hair cut place was a run-of-the-mill Super Cuts. But this barber knew his craft. Good, casual conversation, but more importantly extreme diligence, a careful pace and an attention to detail that you just can't get from a unisex stylist. And the best part - it's the same price as my old lackluster haircuts back home. As an example, I usually have to haggle with the stylist about the segue between my sideburns and beard. Well, I figured that applied here so I started telling the barber what I was thinking about it, and he told me he had already smoothed things over to look good. And they did. I'm incredibly impressed. Please, please, please if you get a good haircut here tip generously. I can imagine students stream in here, get a haircut and pay the base fare so they can save a few bucks for a slice of pizza or a bottle of booze. Don't be tacky. These barbers, or at least my barber, are incredibly good at what they do, and like a waiter or waitress deserve and need the extra compensation for a job well done. If you want to be cheap, cut your hair at home or find a cheaper stylist. And as the another reviewer said, don't come here looking for anything fancy. They cut your hair and do it very well. I'm not sure they'd be keen on sculpting it into dreadlocks or painting it a neon color. read more

Came here based on Yelp reviews in a new city for me. Walked right in a little after 5 on a Friday, which should have been pandemonium based on my previous experiences at barbershops, but was able to sit down and get started right away. I worked with Todd who, with minimal instruction from my part, gave me a great haircut. Like some of the others have said, this is a barbershop, not a salon- come in here to get a haircut, not a hairdo or coloring. I could also tell that if I came back often (like some of the other regulars in the shop), it was a classic barbershop atmosphere- jovial and irreverent. 'Normal' haircuts are $15, buzz is $10, cash only.. Pretty reasonable for the area, especially if you value the way you look. read more

A no-nonsense barber shop. The quality of haircut varies depending on who you get, but it's usually fairly dependable. I've been coming here for about a year, and have gotten one haircut that seemed noticeably uneven. (Then again, a haircut usually has to be quite dramatically bad for me to notice anything wrong with it.) The thing that keeps me coming back here is the speed. I come in without an appointment, and usually get a chair without a wait. Bzzz, snip, pay, leave. I'd time it, but the haircut would probably be over by the time I found the stopwatch function on my phone. The price is reasonable by Seattle standards -- $15 for a regular haircut. read more

I've been coming here for haircut for past 4 years, since when I moved to Seattle for my grad studies. I finished my grad program in 2020 and moved to Downtown, but I still come here because of the quality and behavior of the barbers. However, in last couple of occasions, my experiences were very bad. There is this old black bald guy (his nameplate was not there) who is extremely rude and unprofessional. Last month I had a not so great experience, but I thought that maybe the guy is old and that's the way he talk, so I ignored. However, today I again had my haircut from the same guy and he kept on saying that "do not move" even though I was sitting still the whole time. After a certain point, the guy literally started shouting "do not move" and started blabbering. He made me feel very insecure and the way he was behaving as if he was giving me the haircut for free. He didn't even cut my hair evenly, and said he was done. I don't think I am going back again to this shop and I do not recommend this place to anyone else. read more

I have been going here for the past 5 years while an undergrad at the UW. The last 2 haircuts have been absolutely horrible. First, the lady barber managed to cut my forehead 2 separate times. Figured it was an off day so I went back. I have been growing my hair out for 2 months in order to grow a mullet (as a joke), so what does the barber do?
