I went to The College Room inside of the University Club on Friday night and had amazing dishes!! They are located in Oakland and occupy a beautiful, historic building. The club contains 2 restaurants, one is private for their members (Fraternity Grill), and the other is open to the public (The College Room). We got the hummus, chicken Milanese, and grilled peaches. We also got a sneak peak of the new fall menu which has Arancini, roasted strip, and potato gnocchi. The gnocchi was my favorite dish; it was sooo good!!! It's a club for the University of Pittsburgh Faculty, Staff, and Alumni. There's a cafe, a health club, and lots of meeting rooms. Meetings are what they do best. They have wonderful A/V equipment and quality meeting spaces. Parking is nearby at Soldiers and Sailors. The staff is very professional and helpful. There's a great view from the roof. read more

As faculty and alum from the University of Pittsburgh, I was excited to become a member of the University Club. I have since been here three times for drinks/snacks/meals and have enjoyed every experience! Make sure you make reservations for these member only dining options. I've sat at the rooftop bar when the weather is good. The views of the cathedral are awesome and the drinks and appetizers we had were amazing. I've also had just drinks in the college room, and highly recommend all their custom cocktails. It's a very comfortable bar space with good tables as well. Last week we finally came for dinner and we were SO impressed with the food. We had the poutine and antipasto board for appetizers and they were great. The poutine was amazing (we subbed for all russet potato fries instead of half sweet since some of our party didn't like sweet potatoes). We also all had a variety of cocktails which were fabulous. The entrees were top notch. Great portions and not too pricey. Some had the club sandwich which was huge and had a egg which was a nice touch. They said the bread was nice and buttered and crispy and the sandwich was great. I had the short rib entree and it was so delicious. Others in our party had the steak Diane which was a special for the evening and loved it as well. Our service was top notch. We will definitely be back! read more

I had the opportunity to come to the University Club with my boyfriend and his mom for Easter brunch this year! I have been to the University Club before for events and receptions, but never for brunch! Since my boyfriend's mom is a member here and has been for years, we were able to come for their talked up Easter brunch! The building is gorgeous- as most Pitt buildings are in my opinion. The room where brunch was held was spectacular- decorated for Easter and very sunny and bright! It was the perfect setting for an Easter brunch. It was also PACKED. My boyfriend's mom made the reservations late, so we were able to squeeze in during the last time slot available! Let me tell you.. the food selection was impressive. Cakes, pies, cookies, smoothies, omelettes made to order, smoked salmon, bagels, fruit, ham, bacon, sausage, scalloped potatoes, veggies... they had it ALL! There was also a huge selection of drinks as well- tea, coffee, juices and MIMOSAS. Of course, I had to have a mimosa and it was amazing. As far as the food goes, I wasn't that impressed with how everything tasted. The scalloped potatoes tasted like they were from a box, the ham was good was a little dry, the bacon was OK and the raspberry cheesecake was decent. Nothing was bad by any means- everything was good, but it wasn't amazing. For the price per person, I should have been blown away. Honestly, I am not the biggest fans of buffets considering it's difficult for food quality to be top notch when it's been sitting out for hours, so maybe if I had the chance to try their food fresh I would have a different opinion. Regardless, I enjoyed my meal and had a great time during Brunch. The service was great and the presentation was beautiful. I would definitely visit again. read more

I was here for a work event on Friday and I have to say that the staff and the set up were amazing. Anything we needed the staff was happy to help out and provide. I really think that people enjoyed being that close to campus and the ease of getting to each of the rooms. The snacks were also very very good. I liked each of the breakfast and lunch offerings that they had and so did most of our guests. If you need to have an event, think about coming here. They followed every set up direction to the T and could change on a whim to help us out and to make the even flow gracefully from one talk to another. They also have a snack and coffee shop right on the first floor so if you needed a quick pick me up it was there! The sandwiches looked amazing, but I was so full from our conference snacks that I did not have an opportunity to try any, maybe next time! read more

The U Club is a great location for meetings and events on campus. I'm reviewing for the Cafe located on the first floor since it is open to the public! I think this is the best-kept coffee spot secret in Oakland. Because it is located within the U Club it is less crowded (almost always able to find a seat) and they have outdoor seating! The drinks are reasonably priced and the food / pastries always look delicious (although I haven't had them). I've taken to scheduling my meetings there since every other coffee spot in a few block radius is full to the brim during the academic year. I also have to say the staff is always incredibly friendly and helpful! They always make my day when I'm there! read more

Good place for meetings. The conference rooms are spacious and well-appointed. Overall, everything looks renovated and new. Food items here have been a bit mediocre, hence the 3 star rating, but they haven't been bad. Service has been nice. Right now, they are doing a lot of construction on this street, so it's a bit hard to get to if you parked at the next door Soldiers and Sailors parking deck, but that's the best place to park - their own lot is a bit small. read more

This is in reference to the Fraternity Grille. Mind you, a restaurant that you need to have a monthly membership to access...... My coworkers and I planned on a celebratory dinner on the rooftop but it was raining so we went to the FG. One girl and I got there early, walked into the bar area, we were not greeted by the bartender. Finally after a few minutes he asks us what we want to drink. We asked him for a menu. I should note there were only TWO other people in the place at this time. This whole process was awkward and took much longer than it needed to for two beers. They also didn't have any change in the register to give my friend and that was another whole ordeal. The rest of our party arrives and we sit at a large round table next to the bar. No one tends to us. We finally got a manager to take our drink order. One woman asked what kind of wine they had and his answer was "RED AND WHITE" Wow. We again had to ask for menus. At this point, two more people were in the place, not busy by any means. We sat there for a good 20-25 minutes before our orders were taken. Fast forward another 15-20 minutes and the server comes to tell one of our guests that her order was accidentally given to another table. And then he just looked at her, he offered her no resolution. So she asked what that meant? And he said "I could go have them drop them for you." Why he didn't have them refire the nachos the moment he realized the error is beyond me. They sat there for a few minutes exchanging awkward looks and saying the word "drop" back and forth. It was super weird. Finally he went to have them remake her food. The rest of the tables food had arrived. We hesitantly began eating only to realize we had no silverware. Awesome. Now there were two other tables in the restaurant so we didn't stand a chance. My fish tacos were just okay. The fish was so so. The only redeeming quality was the cotija sauce. That was really good. The womans nachos finally arrived and two managers apologized to her. They said this isn't how they normally operate. I understand if you're short staffed or something but it was over for me the moment we walked in. Short staffed/busy doesn't give you a pass to not be friendly. It honestly felt like that was the bartender/servers first day ever of working in the service industry. And if it was, he shouldn't have been alone like that! It was by far the most awkward and disappointing experience I've had. read more

If you work at Pitt, or are a life member of the Pitt Alumni Association, you can join as a member of the University Club (or U-Club as the cool kids call it). This is my go to spot for lunch - daily they have a "themed" buffet that is very reasonably priced and almost always plentiful and tasty. For example, macaroni bar day. Need I say more? Yeah, delicious mac and cheese with a bunch of awesome toppings. And a salad. And dessert. For well under $10. And you can make as many trips as you want. BOOM! In addition to the College Room (this is where the delicious buffets are along with a well stocked bar) there is the Fraternity Grill. This is where you just might run into a Pitt VIP, a physics professor, or just a regular staff member (like myself) who wanted to do a little fine dining. This area is fairly small and it is always best to make a reservation. Finally, the University Club hosts one of the BEST views for happy hour during the spring and summer. The rooftop bar. Overlooking Soliders and Sailors Memorial Hall and the magnificent Cathedral of Learning here you can have a fancy cocktail (or a beer) and peer over Oakland. This alone makes joining the U-Club worth it. read more

I called all over Pittsburgh trying to find the perfect venue for my best friends Bridal Shower. After going to the University Club and seeing how beautiful the building is and how gorgeous the Gold Room was, I knew it was the perfect location! I worked with Michael throughout the process, who was such a kind and amazing person to work with! He had an answer for all my questions and he also provided suggestions that would work best from his experiences. Michael always emailed me back in a very timely manner and I always felt welcome to ask him questions. The day of the shower we had Susan running the show at the Uclub. She was so friendly and offered suggestions to help us. She went out of her way to help us and make the room look gorgeous! The room is already so beautiful that our decorations just helped personalize it for the bride! The 3 girls on her wait staff were so sweet and personable. Talking to everyone that morning while setting up took some of my stress away and I had a great feeling about how the day would go! They did exactly as we asked during the shower and they were extremely kind while doing it! The food was amazing. We chose the light lunch entrees which consisted of the New York Strip Steak Salad, the Grilled Chicken Mediterranean Salad and the Grilled Marinated Vegetable Salad. Our lunches came with dessert, bread and butter, coffee, tea and soft drinks! Our guests were pleased and raved about the delicious food! If I ever host a shower again, I will be calling Michael without a second thought. Thank you to the University Club for making what should have been stressful, a fun and easy process! Based on other reviews on Yelp, I contacted the University Club to schedule a wedding reception. This was the venue of choice for many reasons. Sadly.... the contact person forgot our scheduled appointment. When she showed up, she forgot to bring the "kit" explaining menus, prices etc. She said she'd send them. When she did--she left out the specific things I asked about. After multiple UNRETURNED voice mail messages and emails, I gave up and went to the William Penn where people return phone calls and reply to emails. I suggest that you do the same. read more

I had a birthday party for my wife at the University Club. They did a great job. Amanda made sure everything was perfect and we were able to sample the dishes we were considering. The chef was there as well to talk to us and review our options. At the party, the food was terrific and not overcooked. The secret was making sure your guests were seated at the time you had told the Club that they would be seated. The staff was excellent, the rooms were just right, the atmosphere was spot on and the food was just right. What more could we have wanted. Working at Pitt, the University Club is a place we visit often. Great place to go after work for happy hour. They College Room Lounge has great daily drink specials and have a nice selection of craft beer. When the weather is nice the rooftop terrace is open for happy hour and there is usually live music on Fridays. Also a great place to stop in for lunch. Tuesdays and Thursdays are a buffet (can check the schedule online) which usually consists of a salad, entrée and dessert. For members it is $4.95 and non members $7.95-a truly great deal! Wednesdays and Fridays they have a menu to order off of which has a nice selection of soup, salad and sandwiches. My only complaint about this place is the service is slow but they are usually very busy especially around lunch time. The staff is always friendly though. The Fraternity Grill is a more formal sit down option for lunch or dinner. They also have a café for quick breakfast and lunch options. I recommend any of the pastries or bagel sandwiches. read more

Kaila, the event planner, was very responsive throughout the process and was great about answering our questions and making sure all the details were in place. (She joined the University Club team in 2014, so the older reviews with negative comments about the event planners are based on different people.) The servers and staff at the reception were friendly and helpful, and several of our guests commented on how nice everyone was. The club offers an extensive menu of choices for your drinks, appetizers, and entrees, and everyone enjoyed the food at our wedding very much. The set-up looked great, and everything went smoothly. Absolutely thrilled with our wedding at the University Club! My husband and I are both academics, so we liked the idea of having our reception at a place connected to a university. Additionally the decor and general aesthetics of the University Club were exactly what we were looking for: elegant, classic, traditional but not stuffy. The service was top notch from the beginning to the end. I was organizing the wedding from out of state, but Kaila, the wedding coordinator, easily worked with my mother to choose the food and other details. Kaila was very knowledgeable, and always available over email to answer questions. The food was delicious, and the staff was extremely professional and courteous. The event itself was an absolutely wonderful party, and the University Club easily accommodated our guests, which included about 15 children. The ballroom was beautiful, and looked perfectly elegant. "Upgrades" like fancier linen are truly unnecessary in this gorgeous space. Take my word for it! The chairs, linens, china and general decor (those curtains and windows!) are all beautiful alone without any embellishment. All in all, I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful and elegant place for my wedding reception. For its location in the heart of Oakland, the University Club is reasonably priced and absolutely beautiful (and the staff knows what they are doing!). Don't hesitate to book with them! read more
