The current pastor, Rev…read more Greg Turk, is engaging, energizing, and committed to ministries that bring spiritual growth to individuals and loving justice to the community and world. The rainbow banner on the church tower reads "All Are Welcome", and they mean it. Worship services are uplifting--this is a singing congregation and the sanctuary is one of the best music spaces in town! The messages consistently encourage participants to both receive and grow in God's love (a favorite phrase--God loves you and there's nothing you can do about it!) and to share that love through ministries serving others, especially those who are disadvantaged by our current society. Growth opportunities take many forms--pastoral care, classes, worship, and service ministries are the most common. We're far from perfect, but we're loving toward one another as we explore our faith, experiment with ways and means of giving and receiving, and flexible in response to a changing society. The theology relies on each believer to invest in their own faith and understanding rather than there being a single shared list of beliefs that everyone must subscribe to-no creeds or absolute doctrines. This is balanced with an expectation that we will join one another in understanding our faith, scripture, tradition, and our relationships with God--by learning together we assure that none of us unwittingly twist the message to suit our own needs, prejudices or denial. The idea is that we are all pilgrims, each on our own faith and life journeys, and we are journeying together for now. While we are together we are interdependent, each doing what we can to contribute to others and the whole, as well as being served. When someone moves on, they are missed and blessed for their journey. I've been a member of All Pilgrims since before there was an All Pilgrims...that is, I continued in the new congregation when First Christian Church (where I was a member) and Pilgrim Congregational UCC united in 2003. As you'll understand from the messages below, all congregations go thru various "seasons" in our life together. For example, we brought the pastors of both congregations into continued service with the new congregation. Since then, we've had as many as 5 part time pastors at one time, and have now settled in with one pastor. Each brought their own gifts, styles, and personalities to the position and then current needs of the congregation. Some have been contemplative and pastoral, some dynamic and energizing, and a lot more descriptions applied over time.

When I chose to re-enter the church. I was looking for community and fellowship, without the institutional hullabaloo that seems to be crystallizing in many churches. I was deeply moved by the pastors sermon about corruption within the church, as he bookended how we as a church can make a difference. He has also espoused queer affirmation theology, which is a radical departure from the institutional church. The church itself is modest but has a lot of soul, and a large contingent of dedicated members who bring so much life into it. Within its congregation is a member who is 103 years old and just as lively as if she were 20! The pipe organ plays every Saturday and this church is starting up its choir pretty soon. I love the music. Brings me peace of mind in troubling times such as these. There is no expectation of belief. Only acceptance and fellowship. If you are uncertain about everything this is your church!

Mom's Church SITREP…read more So when I am committed to a full weekend with the mom, it sometimes means a Sabbath morning excursion to the church where her official SDA membership is registered. I make no pretense to being a fan of organized religion anymore. However, having said that, there is a lot of positive interaction that can be achieved through community with different churches, including this one. THE SETUP Ironically, my exposure to this particular church predates my mother's in fact. I first came to this church back in 1988 when it hosted the Association of Adventist Forums (AAF) meetings. AAF is a philosophically more progressive element of the SDA Church, though it doesn't really engender any official status with the SDA Church. Shortly around this time, I moved to California with my then-wife, but humorously enough, my mother then maintained her SDA membership in this church. CHURCHY FUNCTIONS The church structure itself is really quite elegant. It has a lot of beautiful rooms and space, including the large sanctuary where the worship services take place as well as the subterranean level where a lot of Sabbath School classes (before the main service at 11am) transpire. They have some pretty kick-ass potlucks, I must say, and when it was my mom's time (since she is a deaconess) to help with the organization, she really puts on a great spread of food for all the members. VISITORS Since I grew up in the SDA Church and went to SDA Academy and College, I have a lot of visitors from both these phases in my life whom will pay a visit to our family in Seattle. This is the church we will are most inclined to bring our guests with our mom to. THE LOWDOWN A pleasant church experience if your interests run this direction.

What I can say is that they are an amazing group of individuals. Kind, caring, and generous. Many support my nonprofit organization, and have for years. In mid 2021, the board of my organization decided that we did not need to have a rented office after 20 years. They realize we could move to being a remote office instead and that absolutely excited me! It's worked out really well. Especially because Calvin Presbyterian Church allows us to use their space for our staff meetings and other important gatherings. We use the church space maybe once or twice a month. It has worked out beautifully. Great people, wonderful support, and access to space that we need. Calvin Presbyterian is really making a difference for my nonprofit.

I attended Sunday school here preschool through high school. Prior to high school I also took part in the logos program. My family and I volunteered for various occasions over the years including helping with the homeless encampment named Tent City. Sunday school as a kid was nice as an art/craft typically accompanied the day's lesson, so it helped with providing a different avenue of understanding the message of the day. There were a number of different drives throughout the year including food and coinage drives. After my sister and I got out of our class and the parents out of the main service we would typically get a doughnut. My 4 star rating is primarily due to the treatment of my sister and I from various church staff/volunteers that made both of us feel out of place, which is hard to do because my sister and I are kind of polar opposites. One lady would consistently pick on my sister openly, both in front of other people and behind her back. On my end, things went downhill in middle school after I questioned the Bible. I am a scientific type and I believe if something exists, like God, it will come through in the answer to questions, this was lost on the Sunday school instructor. Aside from the treatment aspect it was generally a place I enjoyed.

"Bethany North" is a satellite church of Bethany Community Church near Greenlake in Seattle. Like…read moremany other mega churches, Bethany has decided to branch out in other neighborhoods. So far they've added a satellite in West Seattle, and this one, in Shoreline, at the Spartan Center. Bethany North has its own pastor, but it mostly broadcasts sermons/messages from the Senior Pastor, Richard Dahlstrom, from the main (Green Lake) campus. Occasionally the on-site campus pastor will speak, or one of the other pastors from the Green Lake campus. Having some of the same sermons from the main church is about the extent of the similarity. The Green Lake campus is really big, with multiple services, lots of college kids, and you can often get lost in the crowd. Whereas Bethany North (Shoreline) is much more intimate and there's just one Sunday morning service. There are a couple hundred people who attend, which really allows you to get to meet other people. That's a huge emphasis of this particular church - they really want there to be a sense of community among its attendees - and I think they've nailed that. There are a TON of little kids - so a lot of families from the area. But I think singles and empty nesters will like it too. Everyone is really welcoming and friendly. It's very casual in nature (Seattle style :)) so I don't feel like I have to get super dressed up to go, or sport the latest tat to fit in with the crowd. The music is contemporary but not a heavy emphasis on super loud music, screechy guitars, or drums. Plus - they have muffins! And great coffee! And most importantly, they care that you're there and make an effort to get to know you.

I love the people, the music, the children and youth programs and the Pastor Frank Baresel. The format is consistent and the content is very applicable to daily life. They are very tuned into the local community and needs (e.g. providing food to the kids in the local elementary). This was my first trip to their annual sale and I was not disappointed. They collect donations the WHOLE year and STORE them! And then bust it all out for a gigantic sale - this stuff was priced like junk should be - CHEAP!!!!! I'm talking 25 cents, 50 cents, none of that, well on ebay it's going for....put it on your calendar and come early - parking is limited and this place gets packed!
