They talk, they laugh, they bust your balls, but when all is said and done, they plie you with great food and wine and you feel like you've got a second home to go to should the need ever arise. Now imagine that your new Uncle Tony-you know, the one who gives great advice, wears the nice aftershave, and cooks a mean chicken parmigiana-can cut hair. That was my experience with Up in Tangles. Tony LaVista has been cutting hair for almost thirty years. When I sat down in his chair, he peered down through his glasses and took a handful of my hair and said "good hair. You're going gray early though!" When I confessed that I was pushing forty, he said, "Oh, I thought you were much younger!" That right there was enough to make me like him. Nevertheless, we had an actual discussion about what I wanted and he circled around me, sizing up my face and making mental notes. He then told me he was going to chop about 5 inches before we went to the shampoo chair, I agreed, and like that, the last of my old color was on the floor. We had a nice conversation about family, music, bald guys...oh, and he cut my hair well too. Some people like to get in and get out and not really have a conversation with their stylist, but not me. I may be shy but I'm interested in people, and it just feels awkward to have a complete stranger touching my hair in cold silence. I was so moved by the experience I had to give Uncle Tony a hug. The salon it self is smallish but comfortable. It doesn't have that supertrendy Montrose feel to it, but it's definitely not a backwards 'burb type salon either. Everyone there was very friendly, and I was offered a drink as soon as I arrived. The cost was very reasonable, and for the first time that I can ever recall, no one tried to push product on me (I'm still in a little disbelief over that one). I'll be going back to Uncle Tony for color (that's right, folks, I'm all natural now-dirty blonde with a touch of gray, MROWR!) soon. If you're looking to get your hair cut by someone skilled and totally unpretentious, and you don't want to pay a whole day's wages, go see Uncle Tony. It's a deal you can't refuse! read more

I'm sad. Years ago I went here and it was an upscale very nice salon. I went several months ago and I pull up to a pretty much abandoned store. No clients, no workers but the one lady doing my hair, literally broken equipment and dust everywhere. It smelled horrible and literally looked abandoned. The product was so cheap I new immediately by the plastic smell and I knew it was going to be bad. Overall my hair was maybe 4 out of 10. It was not great for the price. Everyone there was very friendly, and I was happy with my cut/color. While I was happy with my hair, I still don't know that this is going to be MY salon. I loved my stylist Jennifer, she was absolutely amazing!! I went in wanting a really light color highlights and she told me since my hair was black and I had black dye that I could damage my hair if I did it all in one process so I took her advise and did it her way. Although,I didn't get exactly what I wanted I was still very pleased with my hair and how she did everything. However, I was very unhappy with the price I payed of $208 when they clearly quoted me $150! I guess she put in some stuff in my hair that they didn't tell me I was getting charged for and in the end I ended up paying for it. I think next time they should notify the client that hey we have to do this to your hair and it will be extra. So overall, I payed that much money and I still didn't leave with the color I wanted. Now, I have to go back and do it again to get what I want for ex amount of dollars! I do recommend this place and do ask for Jennifer but be mindful that you may pay more then what they originally tell you! read more

This place is fantastic. Martha Cardona took excellent care of me when I came in to have my blonde color touched up. I was extremely impressed with her knowledge of color as well as her hair cutting and styling techniques. More importantly she's really good about actually listening to the customer tell her what they want, and I left feeling like someone really cared that I got the look I wanted. The salon itself is very clean, efficient and organized. My appointments go quickly and everyone seems friendly and welcoming. It was also cheaper than the previous salons I went to without sacrificing any quality. It's a very good place that I recommend to people all the time. read more

I have been to this salon a few times now. The first time I visited I went to have my roots done. As soon as I walked in I noticed there were several children running around. I found it unpleasant but figured that things happen and one of the workers must have had to bring their children to work. The children ran around the salon yelling and arguing with each other the entire time I was there. Needless to say it wasn't a relaxing experience. The second time I went it was to have my color corrected from my first visit. As soon as I walked in I heard the screaming kids again but this time the entire salon smelled like a dirty diaper. It was disgusting. I wanted to leave but I had already paid to have my color done and needed it corrected so I decided to tough it out. Again the kids were running around, screaming and arguing over an iPad. This time they decided to involve me by attempting to spin my chair around. No one told them to stop, I had to tell them to stop. This salon is not cheap. They charge higher end prices and provide sub standard service. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Hair turned out pretty good here, but am giving 2 stars for the dishonest customer service. I let my hairdresser know that I am not familiar with the different hair techniques and terminology as I just started dyeing my hair and she took advantage of that. 1. She charged me to tone my hair separately even though I paid for a balayage service. She tried to make it sound like I was getting a "discount" by marking it down from $28 to $15 when it should not have been on there at all. I confronted them about this after confirming with other hair salons that this was incorrect on their part and they said they would refund me the money...and it never happened. 2. She put a pump of serum in my hair after blow drying it and told me it was a special oil treatment and tried to make it sound like I was getting a deal by saying she wouldn't charge me this time since it was my first visit. Again, I called around and "oil treatments" are not a pump of serum after a blow dry. I am hoping this poor integrity was due to having a hard time with COVID. But, she was telling me all about how well they are doing when I asked saying she has people coming every week for blowouts, a full schedule all weekend, etc. Again, hoping this was just to make me feel more comfortable with the fact that I was the only one in there. Definitely won't be returning as I value honesty and don't appreciate being lied to and taken advantage of. Such a shame. read more

I have been to many salons in the Cypress area and I've never been able to find anyone who knew how to do the style I wanted. I didn't think it was that hard...asymmetrical bob with blended layers. Two separate salons styled my hair like Jim Carrey in dumb and dumber. No lie. I've even left a salon looking like an Oompa Loompa..you name it. Well today I visited Up in Tangles and Veronica cut my hair and it is the best hair cut I have had in about 10 yrs. I am completely overjoyed and ecstatic that I've finally found someone who actually knows what they are doing. They take walk ins and my cut was $25. Seriously. $25. I paid an extra $15 for dry and style and it was worth every penny. I can honestly say that they have a client for life. I Highly recommend this salon. It may not be the fanciest place, but it was a great experience and I'll take reasonable costs and a great cut over a free glass of wine any day of the week. read more

I was forced to go to this salon because my friend was getting married and she wanted her brides maids to get their hair styled here with her the morning of her wedding. The salon supposedly set up special pricing for our "updos" but when I went to check out, I was forced to pay about $25 more than the others because the stylist had to use a flat iron on my hair!! WTF?? All I had done was a simple, sleek pony tail, the others in the wedding party had elaborate updos and were charged much less. Ridiculous! The stylist could barely speak English and when I tried to explain what I wanted she was clueless. This place was like going to a cheap salon in the country. Have continued to be a client over the past year and Tony consistently does a great job with layering my hair each and every time. Too many stylists see a thick head of hair & get that gleam in their eye - next thing your hair is gone! He has a good eye for geometry and symmetry and my layers are always balanced and flow perfectly. I have had past experiences where a stylist would cut my side layers in too far and I ended up with a "mullet" of sorts. Not so with Tony - go see him & you won't be disappointed. read more

Lynn Jacobs has been coloring my hair for 15+ years. I live in The Woodlands and with her recent relocation it is a rather a long drive, however it is well worth it. Lynn is an expert in her field to say the least. She attends hair shows in and out of the state and is continuously updating her techniques and skills learned at these forums. She shares her knowledge with other colleagues at Up-in-Tangles. My hair and color have never been better. She informs you what products are best for your hair and believe me they work. I wouldn't trust my hair to anyone else. The salon is kept clean and smelling fresh, no over powering chemicals odors. The staff are always courteous and friendly and call you with a reminder as well. You owe it your hair if it's color treated to give her a try. read more

Finding a good hair salon and stylist is always a challenge. You have to find someone you connect with, someone whose opinion you respect and place where you can be comfortable. Thank goodness I found Amy and Up In Tangles! At my first visit Amy and I spent the first few minutes just talking and I gave her an idea of my lifestyle, how much time I spend on my hair and what style I wanted. She took that information and gave me a great cut and color. As we became more comfortable with each other she has made some great recommendations and I am always getting compliments on my hair, especially my color. I have never walked out of the salon with a style that I didn't like or was uncomfortable with. I also really enjoy visiting with the staff. They are friendly, fun and always have a smile. And getting a reminder call before my appointment is always a perk during a busy week. I highly recommend Up In Tangles and my amazing stylist, Amy. I went to Up In Tangles for the first time a few weeks about because I bought a Groupon for a cut, conditioning treatment, and style. I don't remember my stylist's name, but she was incredibly young. While she was personable and easy to talk to, she butchered my hair. I couldn't do anything with it for weeks! When I was finally able to go to a different salon to fix it, the girl I went to showed my just how bad it was. The bottom layer was cut at a slant so that the left side was a full inch and a half longer than the right and every time she pulled a layer out to clean it up, there were sections that were a quarter inch longer than the rest of the layer! The layers on the right side were MUCH shorter than those on the left, she REFUSED to cut it as short as I wanted it, but then took the layers much to short for the length it was. Don't even get me started on what she attempted to do with my bangs! And if that wasn't bad enough, she cut a chunk of hair by my left ear, supposedly to frame my face, but it just hangs there when my hair is up and sticks out when I try and do something with it. And the "style" I paid for was a semi-dried half-curled mess. She was trying to sell me more product, but she didn't even style my hair properly! It was just a mess. I'm sure there are stylists at this salon that know what they're doing, but this one certainly didn't. I didn't even trust her to try and get her to fix what she messed up! read more

I purchased a Groupon for $70 worth of services. Before finalized the Groupon, I called salon & asked the rate for partial highlights & was told $60. Asked again when making the appt. & was told the same price. Went in for the highlights & when done, was told I owed $20. Let me add that I have EXTREMELY fine/thin hair so I was not expecting to pay more, I was expecting to be well over the amt. needed to cover costs. I questioned the charge & receptionist 1st said it must have been b/c the stylist added extra highlts...NOT!!! & then she said it was b/c I had a blow dry. Nvr have I pd. $30 for a blow dry after a highlt. or pd. anything extra for that matter. Mgr. wasn't there to discuss so I talked to her the next week & she was not willing to give me credit....only correct the unnoticeable highlts. Yeah, like I would go BACK THERE!!!!????? I don't think so! Highly disappointed!!! Stylist was nice tho...I can say that much. read more

Do not waste your time or money at this salon, I went in asking for color, highlights, and a cut. I came out with my roots still showing, a haircut that no one can tell I got (myself included), and a horrible color job. I was unhappy, the owner knew it and the stylist knew it. The stylist tried a second time to cover my roots, and yet, still my roots show. They asked me to come back another time so they could fix it. But they already tried twice. Why would I go back to waste more time? The owner still had the nerve to say I owed $150. I look worse than when I went it!!! At least when I went in I just had roots showing, but the rest was fine. Now I have an ugly hair color, no visible highlights, and a haircut that never happened. I'm very unhappy. I was there almost 4 hours. This stylist has the title "Master Stylist" on her card. I don't think so. But, I think it speaks for the low standards the owner has for her stylists. I could have done a better job at home by myself. And that's what I'm doing today. read more
