I love that it's not a giant…read moremall, plus there's this fancy bathroom that you pay 10 pesos for that I first thought was absolutely hilarious. I had never seen something like this in the US. But that was before I found out about the fancy toilets they have in the bathroom. You won't find those in the free bathroom. Plus, there's a great resting area in the pay lounge, as they call it. I love the Daiso store in this mall as well. It is probably the best stocked out of all of them. I am so impressed by the security in the malls in the Philippines. I never feel unsafe in any of them. The area where Robinsons Magnolia is located isn't the safest, but the mall itself is quite safe. My beloved and I really enjoy hanging out in this mall when we're in Quezon city. We love the Bench/Fix salon there, so we're there often. I thought the Christmas decor in this mall was really cute. The only thing I could quibble about is that there isn't a lot of places to sit outside of the pay lounge or the food court. Would be nice if there were some more benches.

I went to classes to learn, but mostly everyone in the class already knew Tagalog and were just taking the class for college credit. The teacher was even talking to them in Tagalog. Made it hard to learn. I even asked my friends and family to help me, but they laughed whenever I said words funny. Jerks! So, when the time came to go to the Philippines (I married a Filipino-Chinese girl and her family is still in the Philippines), I didn't know what kind of trip I was in for. My wife's sister let us stay at her condo, which just so happened to be across the street from SM City San Lazaro. Kind of nice being across the street from a mall. Anyway, as I walk into the mall, I am immediately greeted by a guard who wants to touch my private parts. Or, maybe he was just checking if I had anything illegal on me. I'm a little full of myself. Anyway, I walk in and around and see what is probably one of the biggest malls I've ever been in. Yes, this is probably small in terms of malls in the Philippines (as I would later learn when I go to MOA and Megamall), but to me, it was pretty big. It was like 3 or 4 levels of all kinds of stores, from your CD-R King to a huge supermarket at the bottom. The best part about shopping here, no Tagalog required! Woo hoo! Actually, that wasn't the best part. The best part was the people! From the other shoppers to the employees, EVERYONE was just so friendly! In America, it would be hard to find a mall full of friendly and helpful retail people. That's one of the reasons I came here about 10 times during my 2 weeks in Manila. I didn't even need to buy anything, but I just liked "hanging out" at the mall. While I don't think I'll be back in this mall in the near future (my sister-in-law recently sold that condo) with the likes of the aforementioned MOA and Megamall and also with Greenhills and Divisoria having better deals, I wouldn't mind going in again if we just happened to be in the area.

Robinsons Place Mall is a huge lifestyle center, located in the Ermita district of Manila. It's a…read morebit of an oasis; Robinsons Place is very nice, but the area surrounding it is drab by comparison. And it is more than just a "shopping mall". In addition to retail and grocery stores, restaurants, and salons--it has offices for government services! During my stay in Manila, I purchased meals, goods and services here. It was also interesting to people watch; examine products and brands new to me; and compare the price of goods in the PHL, versus back home.

We only had about an hour to explore, and we only saw a tiny fraction of what Robinsons has to offer. Wifey and I only ate food while we were here, and did some walking to burn off some of the calories. Robinson is one very clean mall. The air conditioning works really well which is great to have in the Philippines. Personally, I enjoy visiting shopping malls in the Philippines as compared to in the U.S.A. Robinsons Mall in Manila is a terrific spot to visit, shop, and cool down all at the same time.

I've been to Farmer's Plaza on several occasions. You would think that it's just some ordinary back water mall that doesn't have anything significant to offer. Well You'd be wrong. I was once in need of a particular piece for my desktop. Finding an extension cable with a signal booster for my receiver was quite a challenge. I thought I'd probably find one in some big fancy mall. Truth is, I found it somewhere else. I found it here. It just goes to show you that most of the places you'll find here might be modest or don't have a fancy or well established name, but it doesn't mean that you won't be able to find what you're looking for.

That being said, I don't have much experience in exploring the entire mall, save for maybe the two floors I've been to and the outside when I had to get to SM Cubao. I like the thrift store finds you can check out upstairs - they've got some okay shirts if you're not too hung up over top quality clothes, and there's a lot of food to buy on the way to the MRT, like Pizza Hut, Gonuts Donuts, Jollibee, and I usually get something to eat more often than not. The wet market outside is a bit more structured than most wet markets like the one in Pasig Palengke, and the prices are the same. There are a lot of stalls and I find the vendors are rather competitive here. The setup allows for a lot of open air, so it's not as stuffy as other markets. Some stores in the area are air conditioned, even. The dampa is an okay place to eat, too.

Traffic has gotten so much worse that all the basic necessities we need can be found at SM City Marikina: grocery, money exchange, some cel phone gadgets, and small 'pasalubongs' back to the US. On top of that, SM City Marikina's architecture and location is aesthetically pleasing. Its cool to see S.C.M. from FVR road, heck even at Katipunan Ave.

Spatial Awareness: I enjoy the layout of the entire mall…read more Instead of one long line-shaped mall, all the buildings more or less revolve around each other, making exploration more pleasant. It's easy to find most places & they have a fair amount of help desks. The place gets really crowded during sale, rush hour, & the holidays. Sales: Sales are so frequent that I'm not sure it's wise to "seize the moment" anymore. If you shop at sales often, you're not really saving anymore, because while you're thinking you spent less & got good deals, you have nearly nothing left & have to wait until your next pay day. Parking: They have parking slots everywhere in different buildings such as The Link. The problem is they get full quickly towards the afternoon. The mall needs more security because people still pass through Wrong Way signs. Lounges: I like that the mall has lounges for cleaner restroom experiences, but doesn't that make you wonder why there is such? Shouldn't all restrooms be well-maintained in the first place? P10/use is big when you do the math. Although, it's still hilarious to see some people hoard toilet paper or paper towels. It's funny, sad, foolish, & clever. But I admit doing this with a runny nose. :)

Cubao X used to be the original hipster paradise. A decade ago, the Marikina Shoe Expo opened its…read moredoors to businesses not necessarily from Marikina and not necessarily about shoes. The compound attracted manila's artists and whatnots to form what we call Cubao X now. Back then, there were a couple of galleries and a lot of interesting curio shops and everything in between. If you were a part (or aspiring to be part) of Manila's artistic scene, this was the place to be seen. A decade later, Cubao X lost a bit of hipster cred. The galleries are all but gone, and the original shops have been replaced by newer shops that kinda still live by the same vibe the original Cubao X did. There's also a lot of antique shops here for some weird reason. Cubao X may not be as cutting edge as it used to be, but it's still here and it does deserve a visit.

Perhaps some, if not most of the younger millennials do not realize it but Cubao X used to be called Marikina Shoe Expo, a project spearheaded by the former First Lady Imelda Marcos in the late 70s meant to showcase world-class footwear locally crafted in the City of Marikina. These days, it is still an expo of sorts, but this time of Filipino youth culture that follows similar movements happening in other parts of the world, but in a distinct way that remains firmly grounded on local flavor. Although there are still a few shoe brands that persist in the enclave, it is now also home to other different subcultures, with art galleries, and shops that cater to surfers, skaters and musicians. You want to look at surfboards, skateboards and street wear? How about some vinyl records or a new bag for your ukulele? Cubao X. There is even a popular Itallian restaurant owned by a former Itallian paparazzo and his Filipino wife, which sits a few paces away from a boutique run by a divinator, though one has to make an appointment to have fortune read. But more than a shopping gallery for curious knickknacks and quirky finds ranging from the progressively artsy to the vintage indie, it is at night that this place really teems with life. Crowding within and spilling from its smallish diners and watering holes are animated conversations about hardcore philosophy, puppy love, high and pop literature alike, and the next super hero film. Every now and then, small music festivals are held here where both renowned and up-and-coming performers take on the spotlight, drawing together budding artists, their muses, starting patrons and just the generally bored. Literally, anyone and everyone, all coming together to partake of cheap alcohol, specialty food and generally great music. So the next time you find yourself wanting to explore new ideas over a few bottles of beer, or to just chill in a place where being vastly different from the guy in the next table is the most normal thing to be, just step into the menagerie that is Cubao X.
