I have never, ever loved a dentist in my life. Until now. My husband has been raving about this dental office for some time, but I was so tired of searching for one I liked (despite a horrifying painful experience at the last one) so I stubbornly held out. Now that I'm on his insurance plan he convinced me to give Dr. Updyke a try and I have not been disappointed. The staff is super friendly and Dr. Updyke is completely approachable. So many times I have had major anxiety over going to the dentist or being judged (yes, judged) by the staff that I have put off things and had them turn into emergencies that could have been avoided if I hadn't procrastinated. While I was in the waiting room an older gentleman told me he and his wife have been coming here forever and that I picked a good one. Now I'm passing on that message to all of you. After spending a few weeks trying to find a great dentist, i finally stumbled upon Dr. Updyke and I'm glad I did. This is probably one of the best dentist I've had. He really cares about his patients and tries to do what's best for them. It's a small practice but it is updated and nice. I had previously seen another dentist and was suspicious with what they wanted to do. I went into Updyke office and he gave me another opinion and even took new x-rays at no charge. Ultimately I found out I didn't need everything the other place was asking for. It's now been several months and this office is great. Often a significant wait. They had a wonderful technician named Pam that is now retired. The new technician is not friendly and a bit condescending. I never had a cavity in my life before going here but have had 3 filled by Updyke in the last three years. He relies heavily on a laser diagnostic tool that I now realize results in many false positives. I believe I may have had fillings done that were unnecessary. I was treated rather rudely in my last appointment. I'm not sure if it's bc it's 2020 and they were in a bad mood but I'm not going to go back again when there are so many other options. read more

I came to see Dr. Updyke after almost a decade of being a dental fugitive. I am terrified of the dentist, and for years I laid in bed at night worrying about it, preferring that tactic to actually going to the dentist. Eventually, though, the writing was on the wall, and I knew I had to go. I found out about Dr. Updyke through Yelp (thanks, all you other great reviewers!), and I'm very grateful to him and his charming, professional staff for making things so easy for me. This office is amazing! I found them on Yelp. They got me in immediately, Kris was extremely helpful with my insurance, etc. The hygenist Pam did an outstanding job cleaning my teeth, careful and thorough! She also made me feel welcome. Sadly, I moved from Salt Lake and had to give up my favorite dentist. However, he deserves my taking the time to give him a good review! I always felt great about the dental care I got from Dr. Updyke, Pam, and the rest of his great staff. He always popped in to spend time with me even on a cleaning-only visit. Although I never needed anything other than fillings over the years, I appreciated his investment in state-of-the-art technology. Unlike a couple dentists I saw in the past, he always seemed genuinely happy to see me (including when bumping into him at the store - it was so nice that he recognized me!) and spent ample time with me even though I was surely never a big money-maker for him. I went to Updyke a few times several years ago. I had my teeth cleaned, which was fine, but then I had a deep cavity I needed filled. I told him of my fear at the dentist and asked for nitrous (laughing gas) to take the edge off. When he first turned it on I was able to relax a bit but right in the middle of drilling he shut it off and finished the procedure. He charged me FULL PRICE for the nitrous even though he shut it off halfway through. When I went out to the reception area his receptionist said he recommended the electric toothbrush (sonicare) for better cleaning of my teeth. I went to look at the one on display and asked for the price - it was DOUBLE the price for the SAME TOOTHBRUSH at costco. I declined purchasing it there. I understand marking it up a little bit but DOUBLE? I stopped going to him after that and encouraged the friend that recommended him to me to find another dentist because he was way over the top expensive and dishonest. Charging double for a sonicare and charging full price for nitrous after turning it off in the middle of the procedure was not ok. My friend continued going to him while I found another amazing and honest dentist to go to. Recently my friend FINALLY saw the light after YEARS of going to Updyke. He is dishonest and cares about his pocketbook more than his patients. He recommended a procedure for my friend that was outrageously expensive. At her last appointment he was rude and unsympathetic to her as he jerked out an appliance after just having surgery on her gums 2 weeks before. It was extremely painful for her and he immediately left the room after saying a quick "sorry." I finally convinced her to get a second opinion on the procedure. She found another dentist who told her the procedure Updyke suggested hadn't been done by him in YEARS. He also saved her OVER $10,000. Yes you read that right, $10,000. Save your money for a good honest dentist who is up to date on the latest technology, one that cares about you and not just about lining his pocketbook. read more

I scheduled an appt because of the reviews on yelp. I waited in his waiting room for 45 minutes after being told it would only be a few minutes before I was brought back. I guess Dr. Updyke doesn't really care about his patients time in this city of a thousand dentists. Their lack of courtesy is an extension of their services they provide. I walked out after 45 minutes of waiting and will find another dentist who is willing to respect my time and take my money. read more

I started seeing Dr. Updyke last fall. I had some work done then and this spring. Both times the office over-charged me. I didn't realize I'd been over-charged last fall until they over-charged me again this spring, and I talked to my insurance company about both. I started going to Dr. Updyke about a year and a half ago. I found him and decided to go to him after reading reviews on Yelp. The first time I went into the office the staff was great. I generally have great teeth and when I started going to Dr. Updyke only had two cavities that were filed back when I was 10 or 11 (I am 28 now). During the first visit Dr. Updyke used and told me about this Diagnodent that they use to detect decay. They basically touch your tooth with it and it is suppose to tell them whether there is a decay issue. After the first visit Dr. Updyke told me I had two cavities that needed to be filled. This seemed strange to me with my history of having great teeth. However, I complied and went in a week later to have them filled. After the filling my teeth both ached for over 2 months. I could hardly chew. I don't ever remember it hurting like that when I had my first ones filled back when I was 10. Then fast forward to my next 6 month check-up. Dr. Updyke used the Diagnodent and again found another cavities. This really set me off as I know that decay does not grow that quickly. Especially where I have never had problems with Cavities till coming to Dr. Updyke. I went back on and did some research on Dr. Updyke and noticed a review on yelp that was almost the exact same story as mine. I decided to cancel my appointment to fill the tooth and wait for my next 6 month appointment and go to a different dentist to get a second option. Today, was that appointment. This dentist did not use the diagnodent and used the good ol' fashioned x-ray and exam. Sure enough no cavities. The dentist took multiple X-rays, got in there and dug around to make sure he was not missing anything. He advised me that he see's absolutely nothing that would alarm him or that he even needs to keep an eye on. I was relieved to know I had no cavities, but upset that I probably had two teeth filled by Dr. Updyke that were not needed. Be cautious of dentist that use diagnodent as it is not the best way of practice and to be cautious of filling teeth without a second opinion. I after all am glad I trusted my gut on this one and went to a new dentist. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Updyke's for quite a few years and would not go anywhere else. A note on a post below about relying on the diagnodent - I'd agree that drilling unnecessarily is bad. However I had several old cavities that were identified as issues and Dr. Updyke suggested we take care of them in a preventative way. No push, just "Hey these are going to be a problem. You can take care of them at your convenience or deal with them as they come." I of course took no action. Sure enough three months later crack goes the tooth he said was going to go first. My point here is that I don't think Dr. Updyke is recommending unnecessary work. In my experience I feel like Dr. Updyke is targeting 100% for my teeth. It's his job to identify potential problems and try to correct them. Him knowing that I have two more problem teeth is good. I may be lazy and not do anything about it, but more info is always good. One more thing, if your dentist does not have a 3d printer for crowns and caps (i don't know all what these things can fix), stop going to that dentist right now and find one that uses one! (Dr. Updyke of course has one.) read more

Dr. Updyke was highly recommended, so when I moved to the area, I tried him out. I have excellent teeth and have been getting regular cleanings my entire life. He uses a laser called a diagnodent, which measures the density of your teeth and checks for cavities. He asserted that I had 4 cavities that all needed to be filled, based only on the diagnodent. I was skeptical, since I just had my teeth examined several months prior, with no cavities. I went back to my old dentist for a second opinion, who told me I had NO cavities that needed to be filled, just 1 area that needed to be watched. I also read a research article that stated that a diagnodent has a high false positive rate, meaning that it tends to tell you that you have cavities when you don't. I don't like Dr. Updyke's over-reliance on the diagnodent. My other dentist told me that you should use the x-rays and the exam to make a final determination about cavities. Drilling into your teeth unnecessarily is never a good idea. read more
