Another stop on one of our YelpLouINvasions! After hearing about and subsequently missing an Upland takeover at Westport Whiskey and Wine, I was newly aware of a new-to-me provider of sour beers that was within visiting distance in Bloomington! So while we were in town to drink cocktails at Cardinal Spirits and have some wine at Oliver Winery, we also decided to stop at Upland for some beer. Cover all our alcohol bases, you know? :-P Anywho, the Wood Shop is the tap room and brewing facility right next door to Upland Brewing Co. We got there just a liiiiittle too late for a tour. But it is never too late for a flight! I love sours. LOVE them. So the menu excited me! Our server, Adam I believe, was friendly and patient with us (most of us being a tidbit tipsy since this was our fourth stop of the day!) I really enjoyed all the beers I tried. I honestly couldn't tell you a favorite! We were also able to call in an order for food from next door, pick it up and eat it at the Wood Shop. The space is big and it is fun to drink among the barrels, it is clean and looks brand-spanking new. I only wish Bloomington was closer to Louisville, so I could visit more often. read more

This taproom is so great that I don't even remember leaving! Luckily I have a gf that lurves me and excellent friends in the Dixons to at least tie me to the car for transport. This taproom might be one of the best I've ever been in. Glass fills the front of the room letting in plenty of natural light. Aside from the bar area, the rest of the place is filled with barrels. If the natural light isn't enough for you, there's also plenty of lighting to fill the room. No "it's too dark in here and I can't see" happening here. They have somewhere in the neighborhood of 15-20 beers. You can order it by the pint or you can get a flight. The flight I ordered consisted of 6 beers for 15 bucks. They also have other flight tiers but this trip was for drinking so a 6 beer flight was being ingested. They also have cans and bottles for purchase behind the bar. The beer here is of the Upland variety and the majority of it is also sour and/or funky. I had quite a few high percentage beer that knocked me out. I like the beer. I like this place. I wish I could say the same about the Upland restaurant and bar next door. You can order food from there to bring in here but that'll never happen again for me after Upland double charged me. To make that look worse, it has been next to impossible to reach a manager via phone or via the contact form on their website. I could go into that story but I'll save it for the Upland Brewing review at a later date. Psst... Upland. You should open up a Woodshop just south of you in Louisville. I hosted a private event (50+ people) at Upland Brewery on Thursday, Oct 19. Anna was my contact at the location and she was sensational. She ensured that I had everything that I needed in order to have the event be a success. The food was delicious and came out hot and ready. The bartender was so sweet - our large crowd was no match for her as she was quick and ready! The space was absolutely perfect and was made even more eloquent by the Edison lighting hanging above. Pioneer spirit has often been linked to the early settlers of Indiana. That spirit lives on at Upland Brewing where they are pioneering the exploration of sours as one of the leading producers in the midwest. Now that the major production of their standard line is located on the west side of Bloomington, this location on 11th is free to produce the sours without the chance of the sours crossing over to the more conventional beers. So, they built a separate facility that allows them to do the barrel aging as well as host events. While there, my wife and I enjoyed the free tour (it has set times, so plan accordingly) and I went with the tasting ($5) that allows samples of five varieties in different stages of development. Know that they have a sour for nearly every type of fruit that you can imagine. The sours have an obvious element of sourness or tartness to them, but because of the chemical processes that the beer goes through, some develop a somewhat "cheesy" taste. The levels of sour and cheese vary as the beers go through the aging process. I recommend tastings as the best way to determine what flavors suit your palate. (Know that if you are adventurous, your palate will expand over time and you may end up liking all of them!) What a great, cool new addition to the Upland family. My boyfriend and I had decided to go down to Bloomington for the IU Homecoming weekend and we were excited to see that this had been added to the upland "campus" (what I am now going to refer to it as). We were going to stop in for a flight and to our surprise they were offering tours of the facility! It was cool to be able to do a quick tour and learn how they make their sour aleas. The Wood Shop truly is a beautiful building. Very modern, but at the same time rustic. Will for sure be back! Of note: the Raspberry sour is DELICIOUS! Be sure to try it. read more

We absolutely loved the tour here. My husband brews his own beer, and I help here and there (mostly with grain pours or stirring, and certainly with adding my precious opinion), so a lot of the content on most brewery tours is a bit basic for my needs. This tour had some of those basics, but also some unique attributes, including the opportunity to taste some not-quite-ready beers directly from the tank, which I don't think I've ever experienced at another brewery (even at the sour breweries we toured in Belgium). They had a guava sour on tap that was life-changingly yummy. After the tour, our awesome tour guide hung out at the bar with us and answered our bazillion questions as we sampled the last of our complimentary sips. Make sure you bring plenty of cash to tip your tour guide if you do the tour. read more

This is Uplands sour production site. Great bar. They have all of Uplands regular beers on tap as well as the sours. They have smaller snifters so you have a little bit of everything for a reasonable price. The atmosphere is very chill and you get to set amongst the barrels and footers. Nice place to get the evening started and have a drink with friends. read more

We took a tour here and I had a good time! The tour gets extremely detailed on the process of making sour beers to the extent of not understanding the verbiage being used. I feel like I would have enjoyed and understood a regular brewery tour, but I signed up for the more specific one. Even without knowing all of the terminology to the sour beer process, I still enjoyed the experience! We got the opportunity to taste Upland's Basis sour beer in different steps of the brewing process. I liked the beer, but I'd probably go for the regular brewery in the future! It was so easy to work with Anna to set everything up after my initial visit as I live in NY and she lives in Bloomington. I love that Upland created an amazing space devoted to sours, my current favorite beer style. The Wood Shop has 20 taps, with half devoted to sours and the rest split up amongst small batch selections and Upland standbys (Dragonfly IPA, Champagne Velvet, etc.). Ordering samples is the way to go, with reasonable prices for a flight (6 samples for $15). A few of my favorite beers: -Iridescent= a tangy sour made with apricots & ginger; -Peach= the sourest of the sours, pure peach and pucker; -Stoaked=sip this gently (10% ABV); a boozy fig-tastic Belgian quad; -Barrelchested= sip this even more gently; an oak-aged barleywine. There is a small bar section that probably accommodates 25-30 drinkers. I visited on a beautiful, warm Saturday afternoon and was easily able to find a seat (compared to the always packed Upland mothership location). The staff were actually conducting a tour for IU microbiology students during my visit, discussing yeast and brewing techniques; it was neat to see Upland interacting with the local community. The bar section is right up against the actual brewery area, so you're surrounded by the enormous wooden barrels and tons of natural light from the floor-to-ceiling windows. Our bartender was friendly and I didn't witness any of the alleged cold-shoulderness cited in other reviews. No food is served, but you can make the easy walk over to the primary Upland afterwards for tasty grub. Upland's Wood Shop also has many of its sour and special small batch offerings for sale by the bottle. I'd highly recommend grabbing a few of your favorites, as you cannot find many of the offerings at your local liquor store. read more

Note that food is not served inside of The Wood Shop, so it's best to pop in here first before heading to Upland for a meal. This is an excellent taproom right next to Upland's restaurant/bar. Upland always has a wonderful selection of beers so adding those extra sours just amps it up a bit. The atmosphere is open with a lot of room to socialize. We did the $5 tasting tour. It was SO good. The brewer that led the tour answered all questions and definitely knew what he was talking about. The Wood Shop has a sleek interior and exterior and a robust selection of beers in bottle or on tap. Their focus is developing and introducing new varieties of sour beers to the world. They have 20 beers on tap, and 10 of them are sours while the other 10 are seasonals and small-batch beers, as well as always having several of the public's favorite Upland brands. They offer beer samples and flights - 1 sample for $3, 3 for $8 and 6 for $15. I shared 6 samples with 2 friends and it was an excellent introduction to new brews I've never had before. If you like really hoppy beer of the taste of marijuana I highly (no pun intended) recommend the Hopsynth. PS - The Wood Shop does not currently serve food but they are located immediately next door to the Upland Pub which serves excellent food. read more

Very cool place. I like what Upland is doing in general, and this is a nice extension to it.

Some friends recently told me about this place, which opened in May. So when I found myself in Bloomington recently, I had to try it. This is Upland's hub for sours, and it is a must-visit for fans of those beers. I stopped in about 30 minutes before closing time and was the only one in there. So I got plenty of attention and was able to chat with the very friendly bartender. They had 20 beers on tap, many of them sours and some guest taps, and also had bottles you could buy and consume on premises or take home. I had a delightful apricot sour and bought a bottle of bourbon-barrel aged raspberry to go for $25. There's a small bar with seating, and you're surrounded by giant wooden barrels, which is a great view in my opinion. This place is everything a serious beer fan would want. read more

Cool concept, and I love the fact that you are pretty much sitting in the production facility of Upland. I like a lot of the Upland beers as well, and the fact that you can get several more specialty beers than what is available at the restaurant next door is cool. The Russian Imperial Stout was really good. The only downside for me was the service and attitude of the employee we had help us at the bar. He seemed really disinterested in any questions about the beer and acted as if us ordering beers was an inconvenience. If it had been busy maybe I could have let the off-putting attitude slide a little more, but we were 6 of the 10 people in there at the time. read more

My partner (a sour lover) and I (a sour skeptic) happened to pop into this gorgeous brewery on a day trip to Bloomington. You can consider me a convert after trying their range of barrel aged sours. The range of flavors and the balance of acidity in these beers is something I haven't encountered in other sours (or beers more broadly) anywhere else! The bartender was knowledgeable and passionate about her job which really added to the experience. I really love Upland and the beer that they make. I was excited to try some of the sour beer offerings they have, and the facility was very impressive. However, I did not appreciate the service we received. The employee seemed annoyed by my questions. I am not usually a fan of sour beers, but I recognize that it may stem from the fact I don't know very much about them. I was asking questions to try to make my selections, but felt as though I was bothering the employee pouring in the taproom. I did really enjoy what I ordered, but I won't be rushing back due to the service. I am looking forward to going back to Upland though sometime soon, and sitting outside, enjoying a meal, and a delicious beer. read more

This place has good beer, but bad customer service. The lady who did it tour acted like we were annoying her by taking the tour, even though we paid for it and scheduled it ahead of time. She didn't us any time to ask questions on the tour and it only lasted about 20 minutes. I've been on other brewery tours and they usually give you really big samples during the tour-- but at the wood shop you get tiny samples. Like I said, the beer was good but it was just a bad experience and I didn't feel like sticking around for a pint at the end of the tour at all. I thought this would be a cool addition to btown, but it turned out to be a disappointment. read more
