Just off the square in Downtown Bloomington, Indiana, is a brewery and food place. 1. The beer (I had the proper) was amazing. 2. the cake was pronounced amazing. From my perspective, the coolest thing about the place was the game area. They had the coolest, not huge, but bigger-than-normal Jenga set. I checked that out first. They also have interesting metal sculptures throughout the restaurant. The bar covers most of the back wall of the location. It has that "bar" feel. The funny thing for me? When I was a kid living in Bloomington, I had my haircut done, but the barber that used to be in that location! read more

In Bloomington for IU Father's weekend and a group of 10 went out for dinner. We were only able to get reservations here last minute and they have a new name, Metal Works Brewing Company. You must understand, they are first a brewery and secondarily serve light sandwiches, pretzels and flat breads as an after thought. The staffing was minimal and two ladies were hustling to serve their clients but management needs to help them. They can't do it all and are failing their customer's need. Missed orders, changing orders as they no longer have certain items and asking for drinks multiple times did not leave us with a feeling to return. It is a big weekend in Bloomington and you are running out of food at 7:30. That can't be good on any level. We ordered a pretzel with three dipping sauces. It was the best part of our dinner. I ordered the Brewer sandwich; a BBQ pulled beef with dried onions, bacon, beer cheese, crispy jalapenos and blue cheese slaw served on a pretzel roll. It was very greasy and overwhelmed with the blue cheese slaw. I hope they get their act together. Management needs to get it right or they will have to restructure under a new name, again. Whether it is brewed beers, bar food, flat breads or sandwiches you need to get the service perfected. I don't believe a new name will solve their major issues. read more

Overall the food was good! If you are drinking than this is the place to get food. I saw some couples in the restaurant as well and they seemed to enjoy themselves. Multiple flat screen TV's with multi channels on (obviously sports). They had games on the tables where you could play. Pretty cool, especially if you are drinking. Went here in a group of 10 during our fraternity's dads weekend and it was disappointing to say the least. The beer selection is good but not great for a brewery but I do applaud their unique selection. They are relatively new so operations are expected to be a bit flawed. There were two waitresses for the whole restaurant so we expected slow service but we were there for almost three hours. Took around 45 minutes to even order our food which I will rant about below. The menu is limited and consists of purely carbs. Think shitty bar food and this is a good example of it. Most items have beer cheese and ranch included which I'm not a fan of (Appeal to shitty taste perhaps). The smokehouse flatbread with pulled beef, onions, jalapeños and a bbq drizzle was very dry and bland. The dough for the bread was stale too. It had been a while since I had come to Bloomington and I had come to metal works the other day thinking it was someplace else. The bartender there informed us that Metal Works took over the old brewery about a year ago. Decided to stop in anyway to give it a try. The bartender walked me through some of the beer selections and offered some samples to try. The beer selection itself was pretty standard--a few IPAs, a wheat beer, a light one, and a seasonal one. I had tried their pumpkin seasonal beer, but it wasn't for me. It was a sweeter brown ale served in a glass rimmed with pumpkin spice sugar. I opted for the pale ale, which I thought was pretty standard. Like the name, the interior of the bar was filled with metal sculptures and it definitely fit the theme. I would be curious to see what this brewery looks like in another year once they've established themselves a bit more. read more

We've had two great experiences at Metal Works Brewing Company. My husband considers himself a flatbread connoisseur, and he was delighted with this flatbread (and the fries). The first time our server was very friendly and knowledgeable, and the second time our server got the chef, who was incredibly kind, patient, attentive, and knowledgeable. Both of our visits were when it was not busy (no football games & not regular meal times), and of course I'd not expect this kind of service when it was busy, but I'd really not expect this kind of service ever, so it was quite lovely. I am vegan and my husband is not. Neither of us drink alcohol, so we discovered this place during the Vegan Chef Challenge a few months ago. The vegan selections were delicious to us both, and the chef said that the vegan entree will be coming back regularly soon (I'd recommend calling first if you're going at a busy time, unless it's back on the online menu, of course). They do always have one or two vegan soups and the menu says substitutions are possible. The vibe was good, and I do want to return with a group and play games or hold a book group meeting. I also like the metalwork and wood decorations. Oh, the chef made me a vegan entree (and we both had vegan aioli with fries), and it was delicious. It had vegan chipotle and toast and avocado and lots of other things. I can't stress enough what a kind person the chef is. And we loved what we ate. We even had leftovers, which is always my goal (but we still ate too much first), and they were delicious too. This place is quite affordable compared to other places I eat out. That's different for everyone, of course! read more

The drinks, tater tots, onion rings, and buffalo chicken dip were excellent! This place is great for a happy hour trip with friends. But do not go for dinner. They were out of some items, and the ribs and mac n cheese (which comprises most of their entree options) were terrible. Plus the pepperoni flatbread had way too much parmesan. This place completely surpassed expectations. Beer was solid and food was just as good or even better. German food centric menu. Pretzel and beer cheese with mustard alongside the bangers and smash was bomb. Sausage is made in local butcher shop on south side of bloomington. House mustard, beer cheese and soukraut were phenomenal. Had eaten prior to coming here which gives me even more confidence that food was legit and not just "anything tastes good because I am so hungry" type of thing. Portions large. Love the location with exposed brick and tvs up if wanting to watch a game. Make sure to leave a little bit earlier because there isn't any designated parking. We were almost last for our reservation because there wasn't any street parking. We decided to eat here before the IU basketball game a few weeks ago. Overall the vibe is way different than anything i have ever been to. The rustic and metal artwork was amazing to look at. We did have to make a reservation a few days before. Our waitress was super efficient and got our drinks as son as we sat down. I ordered the pumpkin beer which was season, hands down one of the best pumpkin beers I have had. As an appetizer, we ordered the pretzel. It was the perfect size for 6 people. We each had some without feeling overly full. The pretzel came with 3 different dips as well. For dinner, the table ordered some different menu items, the buffalo bill was perfect to split between two people. The Brewer was enormous! I honestly thought at one point how is someone going to eat this but you just have to prepare yourself to get a little mess when eating it. The Brewer club was absolutely amazing. You could taste all the different flavors and the bread was perfectly toasted. 10/10 would recommend to anyone traveling down to Bloomington for the day. You will truly enjoy it. read more

HI! So I'm confused. Why are there negative reviews and ratings from 2022 for a place that just opened 5 or 6 months ago... Anyway, I've been to Metalworks twice, so far, in the evening during the week to sit outside on the deck and enjoy a beer (or two) with friends and eat comfortable food. I sit looking to the east for the view of the trees and towers and the IU campus. It's nice. The wings are good. They have an awesome pulled pork sandwich. And they have a gourmet style pizza that my friend always orders. No complaints. No issues. Usually our server is Ashley and she's friendly, helpful and on top of it. It looks like Metalworks has become a weekly habit for me. read more

The place is under new management and we were so pleased with our visit. The food was AMAZING! Had the Bush Weld sandwich (a vegetarian sandwich) and it is packed with good stuff. Very satisfying. The tatchos were delish and a big portion. They have lots of gluten free and vegetarian friendly options and substitutions on their menu which we loved. Boyfriend had the gluten free flatbread pizza and could not believe how good the crust was. Staff was quick, kind, friendly, and attentive. We will be back!! read more

Planned to visit on Sunday, Dec. 11. We came from out of town. In spite of Google and Facebook saying they were open, they were not. No indication of the reason for the closing. Still hoping to make there at some point, but communication would be good. I can only imagine that it was something unavoidable for them to be closed, but not even having a sign in the window saying "sorry" makes me wonder.
