Pleasant experience visiting a sick relative at UPMC Harrisburg Hospital. The front desk provides written directions if you check to see which room the patient is in. Other staff members are ready to assist and answer any questions. My only complaint is that one parking lot wasn't identified as the employee parking lot, where you couldn't gain entry even after touching the screen. Other than the operation, my relative was happy with her care in a private room. read more

We gave birth at this hospital. Everyone from our doula to nurses, doctors and support staff were amazing. We had a complicated pregnancy and were anxious about our delivery. Lucky, everything went smoothly and with the support of staff we felt informed and every step of the way. I couldn't have asked for a better support system or birth story. We feel so lucky and fortunate! I will say the only thing that wasn't great was the meals, but hey it is a hospital after all. read more

I had to seek emergency care yesterday. I arrived at 9:30 AM--which is absurdly early--and underwent blood tests, an ECG, and an X-ray, yet I wasn't seen by the doctor until 3:00 PM. You need to have more doctors on staff at an emergency hospital. When I asked the nurse, she said that's just how it is and that it can take up to a full day to be seen. On top of that, the air conditioning in the reception area was so cold that we had to get blankets just to wait for our appointments. We pay high fees for this health plan--covering both consultations and tests. Treating patients this way is outrageous. read more

I have been severely dehydrated herd stick for tech. Still in ER waiting room since I came n ambulance. My triponin levels are & the pain meds they shot me up with is making me nauseous. I have asked to speak to the veterans social worker before she left for day. The tech that gave me my EKG didn't do anything to help reciprocate that. I was a patient in room 308, discharge Feb 5.Posters claiming hourly checks up is false! I was admitted with RSV resulting in wheezing and gasping breathing. I needed assistance to the bathroom. Staff came in the room while I was in the bathroom. when I came out,sheets had slipped down and plastic mattress exposed. Staff watched as I made my own bed while gasping for air, then they walked out. After 3 days I asked 4 people for a towel and wash cloth. They each replied they would get it then left and never returned. I finally got one when I mentioned my husband was there to help me. Later I mentioned the dirty laundry was in the bathroom. Staff said she would get it, took 2 steps then turned and left . Laundry laid there til next day. My husband was in a few weeks ago for surgery with same non existent care. No mouth care, wash cloth etc. I know nursing has changed but as a RN for forty years, I have never seen such non existent, deplorable care. Bedside care for patient cleanliness and comfort is non existent! Dietary department was the exception! They never left the room without asking if they could do anything for me. One heard me wheezing and gasping and asked me if she could get me some hot tea to help my throat. Truthfully I was shocked at the lack of care received! read more

I visited the Harrisburg emergency room last evening for a head trauma resulting in blurred vision, dizziness, nausea, and extreme pain and pressure in my head and eye. I failed my peripheral vision exam and was refused ANY testing. Upon begging for testing, I was given the following lies as excuses 1- "UPMC Harrisburg does not have the capability to order MRIs on Saturday nights" 2- "I had no symptoms that would be considered medically necessary for testing" (As a medical coder FOR UPMC that argues medical necessity I informed them multiple times that vision changes are an indication for imaging ESPECIALLY after a head trauma) 3- "It was too expensive for them or order any testing". When my heart rate spiked to over 200 after being lied to and in pain for hours, they decided the best course of action was to scream at me, unplug my heart rate monitor and then turn off the monitor, demand that I take anxiety medication, and then not follow up with me until discharge. It is incredibly pathetic that this is the standard of care. Avoid at all costs. read more

HORRIBLE ... and it's sad. I haven't been here since before UPMC took over... The intense lack of BASIC customer service is astounding. The level of hygiene and cleanliness disgusting... several nurses even pulled me aside and said 'why'd you come here? This is the filthiest hospital I've worked in." Not all but a good bit of staff that works in the emergency dept are not empathic and have no compassion for family visitors. The lady at the emergency desk who assists in taking your blood pressure etc... was the most rudest inconsiderate person I have ever met in a hospital. I was speaking to a security guard about an issue with visiting situation and she abruptly interfers with our conversation and was very nasty!! I wasn't speaking too her and was I shocked over her rudeness and nastiness. How can a person actually work in a hospital with that type of an attitude. The people who work at this hospital state, "This is a baby friendly hospital". What they don't say is that this is not a family friendly hospital. Having a baby should be a positive family experience. If you are an involved father and present, you will be made to feel like you are inconsequential. Don't get me wrong, there are a few people who work there who genuinely care, show empathy, and understand that fathers are important for newborns. The vast majority will treat you as if you are a nuisance, instead of being treated as an integral part of the family. You will hear comments such as, "he can do all the dishes and laundry now". The fact that in 2024 people think it is okay to say things like this is astonishing. The quality of care? Our experience was one of being induced for 3 days and then a c-section, because some failure of ours. Total stay of a week, unnecessary comments, and being judged and looked down upon does not make for positive experience. This hospitals Emergency services are not Emergency services . You could get here at 9 am and still be here at 9pm . I am currently pregnant and because I am 6 days shy of 20 weeks my pains are not considered an emergency to them . I have been patient all I've asked is that I receive a room to lay my back, while they deal with their other patients due to the fact that they won't send me to labor & delivery. Still in all I've been here for 4 hours and counting sitting in a wheel chair in extreme pain . I don't understand how it's stressed to come to the emergency room when these pains are bad just for them to leave you in the waiting room until they see fit . Following up from the time I wrote this 8 pm I still had not been seen . I'm pregnant sitting in a chair for hours in pain begging every Ed that came out just to at least get me to a bed while we wait . By 8 I stood up and went back to Er registration I told them I am ready to leave because.... And before I can finish my sentence the blonde sitting there says "yea you can go would you like me to cut off your band ". I gave them the folder and she asked again about cutting off my band . That infuriated me more due to lack of care to even administer services and then sending me away with no issue or answers . All the faces that came in before or during my coming in were gone and a new batch of people had came in . If you guys need to hire more staff than do so . I would like to shed a fresh light on this hospital.All reviews are aged so this one is from today as I leave.I am a big review person and when I found out I was being transferred here for surgery needless to say I was a bit nervous.My surgery was quick, everything was cleaned up properly and I felt all of the doctors on my surgeon team GENERALLY CARED for me and my well being.I was treated like family from the second I walked in until the moment I left.I am Terrible with names but I just would like to personally thank all of my nurses that helped me , if you see this review you all were heaven sent and true angels.I pray nothing but the best for you all.I even had a nurse that would tell me she loved me every time she left the room and if there was anything I needed to let her know.Oh they were all truly heaven SENT! A lot of reviews are bad because they don't turn down most patients including the less fortunate so if people don't get everything they want the second they ask they fabricate a bad review to try to hurt the business. Most people have complaints about wait time .That is NORMAL for a city hospital saving more than just YOUR life.I had an emergency surgery the second I was in, waited maybe less than a half hour and I was transferred to OR (operating) and within two inhales I was out.It was such a relieving eye opening experience. I felt like I was at a hotel and I was at a hospital with nothing but guardian angels around me.Thank you so much to everyone from my nurses , my surgeon team, even my janitor was sweet.You all were beyond kind and caring.All of you were more than comforting, caring, amazing and sweeter than cavities!Thank you so much. :) I hope everyone gets to see the side of this UMPC that I did. 100's across the board! I cannot believe the horrible experience I just had at this hospital. I'm pregnant and have been experiencing bleeding so on the advice of my OB I was told to go to emergency. After 2 hours of waiting for an ultrasound I was told there were no further tasks for me only for it to be discovered someone had marked them as completed? No apology whatsoever. Another 2 hours would go by before the actual ultrasound took place while I am left to bleed in the waiting room. Then ANOTHER 2 hour wait because I was told a doctor needed to give me my results. At this point I knew something was terribly wrong with my baby. After a total of 6 hours of waiting, bleeding and worrying they finally found a PA to tell me there was no heartbeat. They sent me to be discharged where I was told that if I paid my copay today I would receive 20% off...this is where I was made to wait even longer because they could not find me in the system because I had already been discharged. Eventually I was just sent home. The quality of care here is nothing short of abysmal. When my doctor sent me to this hospital they assured me I would be seen quickly because of my EMERGENCY and it was clear neither me or my unborn child were of any importance to the staff here. This was supposed to be the hospital I would eventually deliver at. If you are pregnant, please consider a different hospital. read more

My uncle was in the ER and I could not get hold of anyone by phone. I waited and stopped in on my way to work in the morning. The lady at the registration desk asked what I needed and I told her I wanted to get an update on my uncle. She called back to someone on the phone and then let me through the double doors and told me what bed he was in. When I got back to his bed, as I walked into the room I said hello, I wanted to get an update on my uncle. The nurse (her name was HEATHER) was very rude and told me visiting hours were not until 9:00 and I said, I am sorry I did not know that. She left the room. I waited a few minutes and went out and asked another lady sitting at the desk if I could get an update on my uncle and she said someone would assist once the nurses changed, since it was the shift change. The rude nurse HEATHER came back into the room and looked at me and I said I wanted to get an update on my uncle. She said," well you did not say that. I said to her, you never gave me a chance." You just yelled at me about what time the visiting hours are for the day. She said that when a patient is able to talk they can tell you and I advised her that he has a habit of making things up, so I wanted to verify what was going on with a nurse or doctor. She continued to be rude and interrupting me and correcting me if I pronounced a medical term incorrectly. I finally told my uncle that I was leaving before things got out of hand. First - I was only in the back because someone with access to the door let me go back to his bed. Second - Regardless of them letting me go back that was no reason to speak to me in such a rude way! read more

In ER for irregular heart beat. On release from ER, follow up instructions from two Drs were not the same. One said cardiologist, the other said Family MD. Saw family doc 3/24/ 23. He ordered a holter monitor. Twelve days go by no one from UPMC calls. I called family practice and was assured md order and medical records were sent. Called UPMC cardiovascular and they couldn't find referral. After my insistence they found the referral. Here's the kicker...the first available appt for the office near me was May 16, 2023. Found an appt at West Shore office for April 21. If I counted correctly it's almost a month until I get my test. Stressful and unnecessary! read more

My 7 year old had a severe break of her arm. It was bent into a W. We waited around 5 hours until I decided to up and leave. My child had to watch a person had overdosed and twitching sitting near us. It was a horrible experience and traumatic for a young child. You can also make your own flatbread. They have toppings that vary daily and are very generous with them. They have a salad bar, hot entree and sandwich station, but I have yet to try them. The cafeteria sits at the top of the hospital and the seating area provides a great view of the river. read more

This was my first time at this ER and I won't be back. I never write reviews but this place is just awful. Once they finally acknowledge you exist and get you back to a room you are greeted with filth. Blood, stickiness, trash everywhere on the floor, layers of grime on the walls and floors, and sheets that look like they were mauled by a bear. But that's the least of your worries. Some of the doctors here don't care at all. I ended up here Friday night for severe abdominal pain and weakness from barely eatingfor 3 weeks. My first doctor was a good doctor. He listened to me and examined me gently and assured he would do all he could. He got me set up for a cat scan and something for the pain. Ok so far so good, until this very rude and condensending young woman doctor barges in to stop all of that. Then says because I am under a gastroenterologist care I shouldn't be there. I tried to explain that yes I was but I did exactly what my doctor advised me to do if my symptoms changed or pain got more severe. I was in misery or I wouldn't have traveled 45 mins to the closest hospital to me in the middle of the night to be treated like trash and a drug seeker. I never even asked for pain meds, just to find out what was causing my severe pain. Then without warning she comes over and with all her weight pushes aggressively into my abdomen. Long story short. She says severe pain, nausea and lack of nutrition is not an emergency and not to come back. Drink protein drinks to survive. I do now, but I have still lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks. She gave no scripts to ease my symptoms, nothing, ( I didn't ask for pain meds) just leave and told me not to come back. At the last minute the original doctor did come back in and saw I received a shot and two scripts to try to relieve my symptoms until I could see my doctor Monday. He apologized for the care I had received. I didn't catch the woman doctors name, but she should be looked into. She was too busy chatting it up with fellow staff and giggling like a school girl to care for patients. If your policy isn't to help severe pain and find out what is causing it than that should be stated. Talking down to someone and dismissing their pain is just cruel especially when they are scared . I don't know how or why these doctors don't have a little empathy. How would they like to be treated the way I was? If they got really ill or had severe pain they would want to be treated with kindness. This woman doctor has no buisness working in a situation where patients need help and are met with her nasty attitude instead. People go to an ER because they need urgent treatment. Not to be belittled and dismissed and sent home in worse shape. Severe pain is an emergency especially when the cause is unknown. If you live in upper Dauphin county go to St. Lukes instead. They actually care and do all they can to help. I wish we had a closer hospital. Traveling so far is hard enough. This woman doctor and this hospital should be investigated and cleaned. I would like to file a report against this doctor. Because no one deserves to be treated like I was and I feel bad for those who have had her as a doctor. She doesn't treat you with respect or reassurance. She doesn't do anything. But you better believe I will have a sky high bill to pay this so called doctor for not doing her job and actually making my pain worse and making me feel like trash. If I don't do my job, I don't get paid and she shouldn't either. My only positive is most of the nurses and the one PA and original doctor I saw where kind to me. These are the type of people you should be employing not rude and cruel staff. So thank you to the staff who did treat me like a human. As far as the doctor who treated me like trash, you better start listening to your patients and treating them with a little compassion. Because one day it may be you begging for help. We pay your salary, so start doing what you are paid to do. read more

Visited a friend who recently had a baby. They have a parking garage as well as small private lot available. There's a small underpass that leads underneath the train tracks to the Hospital. Check-in and visitation of the maternity ward were a breeze, This is a pretty big place, so of course after taking a right, then going through the double doors and taking my 1st left.... uhhh I got lost. So I can add the the staff I spoke with quicky got me turned in the right direction. 5/5 for my wife's nurse if nothing else. Augustine was his name. He was working in E.R. January 27, 2023 at 7ish pm. He was literally the epitome of the perfect f'ing nurse. He was a nice, respectful, responsive to my wife's needs, guy who knew what he was doing and got the job done in an expert fashion. We couldn't say enough about him. The rest of the visit was equally good however, the nurse Augustine deserves to be pointed out. Thank you to all in the ER that night! read more

In my 5 hours there, I experienced.... A nurse arguing with a patient who was leaving AMA... Why was she arguing with him? Because he claimed that he was waiting for seven hours and she wanted to make sure he knew it was closer to six. The best part of the argument.... She didn't deny that he needed to be seen. She just kept telling him that he wasn't sick enough.... They hadn't seen him yet................ A security guard yelling at a man with no legs because he was too close to a door. Blood and dirt on the walls, fixtures and floor in various areas throughout the complex. I was told that I would receive medicine, water, a blanket and a different thermometer for my temp... All of which never happened. I was ready to leave AMA when they came and got me and took me to a filthy room. My resident couldn't recall details we just reviewed and seemed incredibly confused and disorganized. His attending was a little more together, however, he prescribed me a medicine that was contraindicated with another medicine I regularly take. It wouldn't be a big deal IF I didn't ask and he didn't say he checked and we were good. I was wondering, given the very sparse and nearly empty waiting room, where all of the providers were. They just didn't appear to be present. In the back, I found the nurses, Dr.s and support providers! They were all sitting at the same desk talking about food. I would LOVE to send these people to Penn State Health for a week for training on how an E.R Works. Phil G. If you read this, GET IT TOGETHER. If this is any measurement of your leadership, you are failing. I saw this hospital under Roger and Mike and it didn't look like this. This isn't covids fault or some external set of unavoidable circumstances. This is just super terrible leadership. Get a grip. read more

My 19 month old daughter fell and cut her forehead. This resulted in needing a few stitches. This was a scary experience for all of us. During the procedure the entire staff sang the wheels on the bus to my daughter to distract and comfort her. It was such a blessing to have doctors and nurses so compassionate. My dad was here for open heart surgery so I had to come and go for over a week. It was a pleasant hospital with a nice valet service if you're handicapped. There's a Cafe and Coffee shop on the first floor and I think a cafeteria elsewhere in the building. It's not about Hospital I'm really glad I don't have to come any more. read more

I was a patient there in October of 2021. The nursing staff did not seem to know what they were doing. They could not start an IV and when they did they couldn't get it to drip right. They left it to run quickly non stop which hurt my arm. Medications were often brought late. The worst part about it was the food. It was the worst I had ever tasted. I ordered tea in the morning and got a tea bag and no water. I asked a nurse could she please give me some hot water and she took a styrofoam cup and turned the hot water on from the faucet. Food was salty and the meat was served in gel-like squares and not edible. I am returning to the hospital for major surgery and will be there for 10 days and am wondering how I'm going to heal if I can't eat the food. I am in fact worried about that. It was Harrisburg Hospital. I don't want to be a complainer but the upcoming surgery is an important one. read more

Went to the ER by ambulance and got fast and satisfactory care. Then everyone left the room and after 3 hours of waiting, my IV had long been done. I was in excruciating pain from laying on the bed. There is no WiFi and no phone and I had to call my son and my dog sitter. I was overdue for my meds and still haven't gotten a drink which I had asked for before everyone left the room. I also couldn't find the call button and my IV tubing would not reach the door so I could call out to someone. I, with difficulty scooted to the end of the bed and slid off the end. I waited some more but still no one came. So I carefully took out my IV and gathered my things and went to find my way out. I found 5 people quietly sitting around a desk. The were surprised to see me. I explained to them about what happened; I needed to take my meds and needed to check on my dog. One person said she would get a phone and my doctor said they would get my meds. I felt better and was helped back to my room. I got the phone quickly and made my two phone calls. I never did get my meds. Two young men at different times came and asked if I was going home. Each time I explained I was waiting to get the results from the doctor. It was another 3 hours and I was confused and very sick. This guy said to me "The doctor is done with you. You should go home. I left, shuffling a long the long walk out. No wheelchair was offered. I signed no paper nor was given papers up on leaving. The next day I got an email saying there was a letter in the portal for me. I looked and the letter was my patient summary that said I had told them "I gotta get out of here." And next they write that I was AMA! I am done with UPMC. I have gotten the worst care from them. No care, empathy or consideration. I have had the rudest doctors I am so done with them! read more

Let me start by saying that I don't write reviews but I felt compelled to do so here. My wife had to have a cardiac procedure done and we were referred here by her primary physician. This was our first visit to UPMC. She was treated with the utmost care and concern by everyone we came in contact with. The entire staff is to be complimented. And I would like to personally thank Dr. Nguyen and his team for their expertise and skill during her procedure. She is home and doing absolutely great! Also, a very big "Thank You" to all the Nurses: Jorrie, Beth, Cassie and Theresa and the Physician Assistants: Laura and Nicole, who took such great care of her. She was never in better hands! Both she and I cannot thank you enough. Our experience here was wonderful from start to finish. You truly deserve 5 stars, as far as we're concerned! read more

Had triple pass heart surgery 2 yrs ago. The heart surgeon, who is now the Heart Chief Surgeon, blundered, and caused my diaphragm to come up along my left lung When I had 3 appointments with him he never showed up for 2 of them. I had to have lung surgery to low my diaphragm which could not be lowered 1 yr later I had a large lump appear on the heart incision. He incised it and put me on a wound vacuum for over a month. It healed but a few months later it came back. Retuned for a appointment and he said he needed to open my chest again. Right then I said to myself, he will never touch me again. Had chest surgery to remove the bottom of my sternum which was the cause of the infection at the Penn Health Hospital. That surgeon knew what he was doing and had no problem since.
