Not a good experience. I have been there before and had good results but last night was not that night. I arrived by ambulance, got a quick vitals check -- and then sent to the waiting room with high blood pressure. 7 hours later my blood pressure is still high and I am 60, got tired of siting as I have bad knees/arthritis and couldnt sit anymore. I called Penn Health Hampden and they told me they could take me right away. It was so sad. When the ambulance brought me to UPMC West Shore no one smiled-- when I saw how packed the ER wait room was I could understand why! There were people waiting 10 and more hours for assistance! MY GOD. That is NOT ok. Too many people falling through the health care cracks and not enough staffing to assist! Welcome to the New America? Thankfully I was stabilized by Penn Health Hampden. Sugar was 350. blood pressure brought down, and breating issues treated. I went to the emergency room with swollen feet and painful legs. I was admitted into the hospital and told my heart was only working at 30%. Five days later I was released from the hospital with swollen feel , extremely painful legs and my heart still working at 30%. ......................So, the only thing that happened in those 5 days was my insurance company was charged approx. $100,000. read more

My husband fell and was taken to West Shore Hospital on a Saturday afternoon. It turned out he had a spiral fracture of his lower right leg. The staff - doctors, nurses, aides, technicians, everybody- were great. Ended up having surgery and stayed there through Thursday. The level of care was exceptional. Couldn't have asked for more. read more

If I could give this hospital no stars that is the rating I would give. I spent 14 hrs in a broken wheelchair in and out of the emergency room waiting room and there trauma rooms, having my vitals taken. I'm 71 years old with COPD, CHF, Asthma. Heart surgery, pacemaker and swelling of my legs and feet, I would describe the treatment I received was elder abuse. I went thru 3 tanks of oxygen which all ran out and I had till wait for someone to get me replacements. I spent 14 hrs in a broken wheelchair parked by the exit and entrance on a very cold wet day and had to request blankets to keep warm. I spent 14 hrs in the waiting room and had advised the nurses taking my vitals that I had not gotten any of my medications before I left home and I was going to need my medication. I also didn't receive any food or drink the whole day. When I advised the nurses I was crashing from not having any of medications since the day before, I needed help and they still did nothing except figure out how to get me a ride out this emergency room to go home. After 14 hrs of nothing they got an ambulance at midnight for me to go home. Upon arrival at home I toke my medications and got something to eat. Worst experience in my life. Given the choices offered by the westshore ambulance service I would rather die then call 911. The Westshoremen Ambulance service says I have 2 choices of hospitals and I will never return to Holy Spirit Hospital or UPMC Westshore. read more

Absolute nightmare of a hospital. Never in my life (as someone who has worked in multiple healthcare facilities) have I seen healthcare professionals care so little about their patients. The ER waiting room is completely closed off with no windows so they cannot monitor anyone. After passing out from extreme blood loss and consequently falling down the stairs breaking my ankle, I waited 5.5 hours in what started as an empty waiting room, but filled up as 0 patients including people brought in by EMS were called back. When I finally was called in the physician said "why are you here again" and I told her the events that happened and she said "do you even want me to look at your ankle".... I demanded testing and was told I need surgery for the excessive bleeding but when I tried to ask a very simple question, the physician literally threw my discharge paperwork on the table and said "I don't know, it's my not speciality" and left. I later found out that the EKG they performed on me in triage was abnormal which they failed to tell me or even report on my discharge paperwork. When I was triaged, there was blood on the chair that I was sitting in and when I brought this up to the nurse, she said "yeah it's been a crazy night" and refused to clean it up. I watched in horror as other patients that were brought in my EMS and were obviously in distress were crying out in pain for several hours without any evaluation or monitoring. Seven hours ago my mother-in-law was transported from her doctor's office to the UPMC Emergency room, by ambulance, diagnosed with pneumonia and high blood pressure. She has been sitting in the ER waiting room these 7 hours without seeing a physician and has missed two doses of her antibiotics as a result. This place is a terrible joke if you really have an emergency. The place is understaffed, too small and it doesn't appear that anyone cares. If you really need medicine attention, THIS IS NOT THE PLACE! read more

Had our daughter in the surgery center for tubes in her ears. Dr. Macalusso and the outpatient surgery team were awesome. They deserve 5 stars. Everyone we encountered were friendly and helpful. This hospital deserves higher ratings than I am seeing. We spent almost a week there with a sick friend, who received excellent care. Not only that, everyone who worked there was extremely friendly and helpful from the nurses to the cleaning staff. The rooms and bathrooms were always clean and well-stocked. The cafe had great food - restaurant quality - as well as friendly people. I asked one of the cooks if UPMC trains all their employees to be friendly and helpful and he told me that is part of the UPMC mission statement. Well it works. I recommend the hospital and If you are ever at UPMC West Shore at mealtime, give it a try. The food was great. read more

My sister and her husband waited for over an hour in emergency room with their 11month little girl with a horrible ear infection. Was told someone was going to check the temperature.....not a single person ever cameback so they went to Geisinger Hospital in camp Hill SO much better care. What kind of an ER allows an infant to cling to their ear with a high temperature and never acknowledge them for more than an hour. My sister said there were people in the waiting room playing on their phones, chatting, etc. her husband is serving in the Army and stationed near by and didn't want to make a scene with his sick daughter. That's when they decided to just leave. Your establishment should be ashamed of themselves. You are supposed to "care" for the sick, not ignore them. West Shore Hospital recently and were very pleased with the friendliness and attentiveness of all the employees. The nurses and nursing assistants were professional, yet comforting enough to convey they really cared about their "guests". The patient room floor was well staff and there was minimal wait when a nurse was needed. The hospital room was clean, spacious, contained its own bathroom, and had a good Wi-Fi signal. The floor we stayed on had a patient pantry, that contained juice, drinks, snacks, and ice cream for the patients at their convenience. The cafeteria has no resemblance to "hospital food" of days past but instead was a multiple station café where customers can select from fresh meals and grill items to paninis and snacks. A well-stocked fresh salad bar was in operation throughout the day. This review reads more like a hotel review so it should give you an indication on the non-hospital feel of the environment. While I hope anyone reading this review never needs to experience the West Shore Hospital, but if you do you will be pleasantly surprised. read more

By far the worst emergency room experience I have ever partaken in. My wife sat in tremendous pain for 5 hours, without being given any form of preliminary examination, nor any steps taken to help with pain management. An elderly patient, clearly quite ill sat for roughly four hours in the waiting room until he was slumped over. Only then was he given medical attention. Appalling level of care. Not a single person in the waiting room that night was seen in under 4 hours, during our time there. Eventually I asked the registration staff member to see if anything could be done for my wife's pain. She was taken back, for what I thought would be an examination and assistance. She was kept on a bed without examination or any steps to mitigate her pain. 2 hours later I was informed she had still not been seen. My wife and I chose to leave, and wait for a Patient First to open. It speaks volumes when someone in severe pain will walk out of an emergency room and travel elsewhere to be seen. Was sent here by my Eye Dr. blood pressure was 210! got there around 11:00 am. They took my pressure, drew blood did an ekg then gave me a bag with cup in for urine sample. send me back to waiting room, about 3 hours later they came back and gave me another pressure test. 207 this time. sent back to waiting area that was packed full, sat there until 5:00 pm and then got up and left, what an awful place, some were there before me and still there when I left. A little boy came in around 3:30 with a cut on his neck that was bleeding, he was still there when I left also. WORST EMERGENCY ROOM!!!!! Was brought in by ambulance after a fall, listening to the staff while waiting with ambulance crew, heard "oh, great, put the booboo in room 6. After an absolutely TORTUROUS X-rays, was found I broke my back. Told them I needed to use restroom, (after finding out my back was broke), they sent me walking down a long hallway WITH NO ASSISTANCE but my husband, who DIDN'T know what to do when we got there, tried flagging ANYONE for help, while staff were busy bitching about how bad they have it, GOT NONE!! I recently went to the Emergency Room at UPMC Pinnacle Health at West Shore, because of chest pain and pressure after shoveling snow. I was taken in for examination very quickly, and received excellent care from all the staff. A cardiologist came to see me and spent time talking about options for care and further testing. I stayed overnight in the observation unit because more tests were needed the next day. That was very comfortable and convenient. Everyone who worked with me was polite and helpful, and explained the purpose of the tests. I was grateful to find that I did not have any heart blockages and was eventually able to go home with medication. I would recommend this modern, updated facility for any emergency need. read more

This was the 2nd time I was in the ER since they opened. First time I waited over 8 hours to be taken back and get stitches. Ugh... This 2nd time I was in an ATV accident and had rolled my ATV. When I arrived I could barely walk. I was taken back to a room within 45mins and was accessed. I had severe swelling on my right side buttocks plus alone my spine. In the first few hours they ordered a CT scan of my body looking for broken bones, internal injuries and bleeding. Everything seem to have checked out but they wanted me to stay at least overnight for observation because I could bleed out and die if things got worse. I gladly agreed.... The following morning they took me down for another CT scan because the blood work showed I might be bleeding internally. The nurses on the 5th floor were mediocre at best as far as patient skills. They acted like they didn't want to be bothered. When I returned from the CT scan I said I wanted to use the restroom before I got back in bed. The tech wheeled me about 10 ft from the bathroom door and left. I laughed because on the bathroom door had a sign on it saying "Call and Don't Fall" . When I was released I was told I was good to go. When I asked if someone was going to take me down in a chair I was told "I thought you said you could drive". Sitting was not my issue, it hurt like hell to walk. I told the nurse I was on the 5th floor of a hospital I wasn't familiar with and I had not damn idea where the elevators were and I was in no shape to be wondering around... They agreed to take me down. Got outside of the ER and I told the tech my vehicle was like 3 spots over. She said she wasn't allowed to wheel me in the parking lot. I said the sidewalk goes right in front of my vehicle but you can dump me where ever you want. She mumbled that was still considered the parking lot but did then wheel me up to my vehicle. I thought it was every hospital's policy to wheel every patient out of the hospital? read more

Unfortunately my ER experience at the his hospital was the worst I've ever experienced at any medical facility. They are quick getting your vitals and blood work, then they let you sit and marinade in the waiting area for an eternity. In the 1st 3 hours I only heard one name called to see the physician. If you have an emergency this is not a good place to go. You have to choose at least 1 star to post a review, but this place really doesn't merit even 1 star. read more

Honestly this was a very disappointing experience. Took an hour to see triage. Sent back out to waiting room with a collection cup for a urine sample and told to use the main restrooms in the waiting area. When done, to bring the full sample to the aide working the podium. All the while walking through people checking in etc. Collection cup did not contain wipes or a bag to seal once done. Imagine dropping that in a busy waiting room...biohazard much??? Now on to the wait, 1 hour for triage+1 hour for a bed and once in a bed, another 45 minutes for a nurse to appear and place a BP cuff. We are on hour 3 of now and still have not seen a PA or Dr. Ironically this place is a bit of a ghost town - it appears that about 10- of the rooms are occupied - the rest are empty and dark. Its quiet as all get out and hardly any staff to be seen... Think I'll be packing up soon and taking the sick patient to an ER that can at least provide some communication and care. read more

Treated so much better at Pinnacle West Shore than another hospital system in the area. They actually got me on oxygen right away when they noticed I was having extreme difficulty breathing from congestive heart failure. The other hospital just rolled their eyes & told me & my wife to have a seat in the waiting room while I strained to get enough air in while feeling like I was suffocating. Waited 5.5 hours and never saw a professional except for triage when we first arrived. Alaskan Bush People show was on a continuous loop, which is another level of pain! I saw their wedding photos more times than their own family! One unaccompanied elderly patient in wheelchair was permitted to roam waiting room hitting people and other wheelchairs like bumper cars at Hershey Park. It was an awful experience and so surreal ....couldn't make this stuff up. In 5.5 hours, we saw 6 patients treated. When we said we were leaving (as there was more than likely another 3-4 hours of wait time), the nurse said the hospital was at capacity, the ER was filled with patients that otherwise would have been admitted to regular patient beds which meant there was no room for ER patients other than the small triage rooms. There were elderly patients with head wounds, respiratory issues, and other issues that I feel should have been addressed in less than 8 hours. Luckily our issue was able to wait until we could get to our regular doctor, but others may not have that option. I will avoid this ER at all costs! read more

The ER in this hospital shouldn't even be licensed. It takes 5 to 8 hours to be seen here. There is no one checking on the people waiting in the waiting area, some of which came in by ambulance! The staff seem like they don't care whether you are seen or not. If you want a Third world experience, this is your place. read more

I got to the ER at 5 am with bad pain. I didn't see a Dr until 6:30. It wasn't busy. I didn't get out of the ER until 8 am. 3 hours of waiting around a dead ER. Seriously the X-ray tech told me the Dr gets the results right away. Nurses were so busy in conversation to check me out of the ER after the Dr finally got me fixed up. read more

I usually use UPMC Harrisburg, but decided to come here since it's closer to home. I'm a 30/F with a cardiac history. I came in around 5pm with 6/10 chest pain and hypertension, nausea, lightheadedness and dizziness. I was evaluated in triage shortly after my arrival, where labs were drawn and an EKG was obtained. Shortly after I was sent to radiology for a chest X-ray. After another 2.5 hours, I was re-evaluated in triage again, after complaining that my chest pain had increased. FOUR HOURS LATER and I still have yet to be taken to an exam room and seen by a doctor. This is disgraceful. No one should ever have to wait that long, especially when you're experiencing cardiac problems with a cardiac history. Only reason UPMC West Shore is getting 2 stars instead of 1 is due to the cleanliness of the facility. read more

The thought of surgery is unnerving to anyone no matter which way you look at it, but when you realize that you and your loved one are in the hands of caring, compassionate and professional people, your nerves seem to calm and your mind is put at ease. My personal experience was with Dr. Link and the Cardiology Team at West Shore Hospital. The care and bedside manor of these professional men and women was not only superior, but more importantly, it was consistent from the moment we arrived until the moment we left. The administrative staff was pleasant and helpful - the nurses were friendly, patient and very informative - the nurse anesthetist and anesthesiologist collectively spent about an hour talking to my family and I before the procedure. They explained everything that would/could/should happen in while in the operating room and encouraged us to ask any and all questions we had. Side conversations we had about vacations, hobbies and common interests temporarily distracted us from the fact that we were in a hospital waiting for surgery! After the procedure was complete, Dr. Link spent about 20 minutes giving us a play-by-play recap of what happened in the OR, what we should expect next, and thoroughly answered all of our questions. The professionalism, knowledge and bedside manor that this team provided my family and I was like nothing I've ever experienced anywhere - they were absolutely incredible! Although I hope I never have to see any of them ever again under the circumstances that initially brought us there, I can rest easy knowing that if I do go back, I will be in the hands of top notch greatness. Pinnacle Health should be honored that these men and women are a part of their staff! read more

Had a doctor basically tell me my insurance made pointless to treat. Wow he said doctors barely make money off of us. Then he did nothing for me and sent me on my way after I listed about 10 symptoms... I had also waited in the emergency room for 7 hours! Apparently they learn nothing about mold exposure in medical school... What a pompous arrogant glutton prick. I will never ever use this facility again. read more

Terrible experience. Quick to get in but took 2 hours to get discharge instructions from the time the doctor said just give me a few minutes. It was not busy and staff were standing around. I was repeatedly told the doctor was writing my instructions for 2 hours. Total time in 4 hours. Final bit of disappointment was the nurse doing a poor job bandaging my IV line which led to blood shooting all over my car and clothing as I'm driving home. Most staff were friendly at least but not helpful for the most part. read more

What a wonderful hospital!! Especially the emergency department. My husband is a cancer patient currently on chemo and they did not miss a beat in getting him out of the crowed waiting room and into an isolated area. Everyone was very kind and thoughtful while caring for him. read more

This was my first visit here and I would not recommend this ER unless it was a last resort. They may be quick to get X-rays and blood work but the physician barely spends any time with you to properly diagnose and clarification on medication. A return visit will be needed read more

Horrible experience. My grandmother was brought in ambulance. Currently sitting in the waiting room for 3 hrs. Was told the actual hospital was full. And there are admitted patients taking up beds in the emergency room. If you know your full, why let the ambulance bring her here? 84 year old woman in severe pain. As I sit here in the ER at West Shore with an 8 year old child with an extremely severe headache and in a lot of pain, I realize we were in the waiting room For over an hour before being moved to an ER room. Only two other patients in the ER! We have now been sitting here over an hour before we've even seen a nurse who smiles and says as if it's nothing unusual "yeah you've been here a while and I'm not really sure when the doctor will be in but it should be shortly". Meanwhile we still have not even seen a doctor in the ER anywhere, no one has given us any medication, we've been checked on once in an hour and a half and the nurses are having a grand old time at the nursing station chit chatting and laughing it up! How pathetic this place is! Who knows,maybe could have got better care and service at Carlisle Regional but that's highly doubtful. I guess like everything else anymore our health care is in the toilet. Definitely don't go to West Shore! Who knows how long this fiasco will last! read more

After our second trip to the ER at this hospital, I understand all the other 1 Star reviews. I really hope that they read these reviews and it's not a total waste of our time because they have some serious problems with some of their nurses that they need to be aware of. My husband went in with sever confusion from his ammonia level going so high and 2 of the ER nurses were asking me what they should do with him. Prior to this I had to leave the hospital for about an hour. They assured me he'd be ok because he had an alarm on his bed and they'd know if he tried to get up. When I got back to the hospital, they were wheeling him to another ER room and the nurse told me it was because while I was gone he kept trying to get up and she got absolutely nothing else done! Poor girl. The ER nurses depend way too much on the person that brings them in. This review could turn into a book with my list of issues but one common denominator...do not report a nurse at this hospital or all hell will break lose. Nurses do not like for you to report their incompetence. Hmmmm, I wonder why that is? read more
