This is the absolute worst place that I have ever stayed. It's straight garbage. The staff is incredibly rude. Despite paying 80% when booking, which is what it asked for, they called as we were driving there, to tell us that we hadn't checked in and they need the rest of the money, and wanted us to give them our credit card over the phone - keep in mind that it was 11am, and before we could possibly check in. Beyond that, giving a credit card number over the phone is a great way to have a bad day, which was validated later. We ended up getting there, and it is a DUMP. I mean rotten wood, mold, peeled paint, nasty smells. Dirty common areas that were filthy the whole time we were there. The room had stuff all over the floors that hadn't been cleaned from the prior guests. When you are there, don't plan to sleep. They have nightly live music that is incredibly loud, and there is no part of the property that you can't hear it. People are drunk and yelling and screaming till 2-3am every night. No amount of ear plugs can enable sleep. Any questions of staff are met with disdain. The food is disgusting and I literally threw up from it the last night we were there. Drinks are the worst I've ever had. Didn't even bother to blend the Mudslide that I ordered. Keep in mind, that I like Waffle House, so for me to call this place terrible, it's legitimately terrible. Oh, and the TV stored my AppleTV login info, even though I fully logged out, and I find out yesterday that someone has rented $180 of movies this week that I am now having to fight. read more

I want to express my disappointment and frustration with my reservation at the Upper Deck Hotel in South Padre Island. I booked through their website a month ago to celebrate my birthday in August for the night. The Upper Deck Hotel website showed a rate of $134.00 for one night, with a total of $180.43 I paid in full at the time of booking and confirmed. I got an email today saying that during a recent transaction, the new reservation system found an error that impacted my booking. You have two options: keep the reservation and pay the remaining balance of $115.15 or cancel the reservation and get a full refund of $180.43. When I called Upper Deck, my request was not honored knowing we are a loyal customer who have stayed there in the past and enjoyed the bar section. The front desk said an email was sent to me on June 22nd, but I didn't receive an email or a phone call. I forward an email to the hotel stating I don't think we should be penalized for the hotel payment transition. To keep loyal customers, the owner should honor the website price, knowing we paid in full, which would encourage us to return in the future. I got my refund and booked a brand name hotel for $165.00 a night instead of paying $295.00 at Upper Deck. Sadly, I won't be supporting this small business anymore. This issue should have been handled between the hotel owner and the booking company. read more

Oh my goodness, this place is fantastic! We were riding the Wave bus and some people on the bus told us that we needed to go here. Great music, lots of dancing and wonderful Winter Texans in the afternoon. We arrive to the hotel/bar and was a little confused where the bar was. Being called the upper deck we thought maybe it was upstairs but quickly ran into someone that guided us to the back door of it. You go in and it was decorated so cute for Christmas. Everything had Christmas wrapping paper on it! They have great well drink specials for $3.50. Really good strong pours. We quickly got our drinks and went outside where we heard the music was going on. They have several tables outback, and every one of them was full. It looked like all these Winter Texans were having such a wonderful time dancing to the music and living life to the fullest. There was a table with a couple empty chairs, and one of the guys came over and offered for us to sit with them. We met a lovely couple and stayed there until 6 o'clock when the music ended. The bar quickly emptied out. It did look like another band was coming in for a second round but we decided to go ahead and leave and head back to the hotel. We will definitely be back! read more

Im so hurt right now. We made reservations days ago for father's day weekend and get an email this afternoon that my reservation would be completely refunded to me unless id like to pay an additional $213 dollars because they had a new reservation site that priced the rooms too low. The DAY BEFORE father's day. Absolutely no inconvenience accommodations. Everything is ruined now. There is no way to find a room for us at any rate that's not ridiculous at this point. I've never had a company so unprofessional that so obviously made this about money. They realized they made a mistake and ive already paid with a confirmation email and to be told no I cant stay there the day before unless I pay more money that doesn't even include the 200 dollar deposit for incidentally, clearly shows they dont care about customer relationships or the reputation of the company. $$$$$$ read more

Great atmosphere perfect location. Great place to meet new friends. The bar is very much worth visiting.

The property has terrible mold issues. We first stayed in one room and as soon as we walked in we smelled the dampness and mildew. Upon looking over the room we noticed that the ac was covered in mildew and what looked like black mold. I have asthma and I ended up having a flair up and having to use my inhaler. Once we notified the front desk they moved us to a different room which at first seemed fine, but once we looked at the walls we noticed multiple spots of black mold growing on walls, ceiling and fans that they tried to cover up with paint but it was clearly visible. Additionally, when we were checking in at the bar, the kitchen door was open and we noticed a giant moldy area right next to the food containers. We took pictures and videos of everything and we will be contacting local health department to perform an inspection since this was an apparent health hazard. Furthermore, the owner offered no kind of remediation and tried to threaten us with a lawsuit when we notified them that we will be filling a complaint with a health department. UPDATE 6/27 TO OWNERS RESPONSE The front desk staff did let us take a look at the other room, which did smell fine. However your guests should not be expected to examine every wall of their room for presence of mold. We do live in a coastal community which is precisely why this is even more unacceptable to us, as reputable business particularly in the hospitality industry know and address these issues properly with dehumidifiers and other solutions. I absolutely did report this establishment to the Better Business Bureau and South Padre Island Health department as your future potential guests should have the right to know the true condition of this property and make a conscious choice of whether they want to possibly put their health in jeopardy. The pictures clearly show that black substance (potential mold) is seeping through the layers of paint which means this issue had nothing to do with the recent inclement weather and is obviously an ongoing and known issue. The age and location of your hotel is not an excuse to ignore the potential health hazards to your guests. read more

This weekend I had the most pleasant stay at a charming hotel with an incredible ambiance in South Padre Island. From the moment I stepped inside, I was greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere. The hotel's quaint decor and cozy furnishings created a soothing environment that instantly made me feel at home. The hotel in a well situated location, minutes away from the downtown restaurants, although I did prefer to have most of my meals poolside from the Upper Deck kitchen. I absolutely, positively adore the concept of this hotel. It's adults only, great beach access, bright and colorful, and has a little hidden oasis-bungalow vibe to it. My sister gave it lots of high praise, and for the off-season prices? It's hard to find such a deal. Things to keep in mind though, this place is old and is nearly 100% made of wood. And it's on a sand-bar, so things will shift. We had a problem with our door not catching and latching when we'd leave the hotel room, but maintenance was on it super fast and had that fixed for us in about 15 minutes. We were also disappointed to find our room didn't have a mini-fridge, as we'd brought some watermelon to enjoy. This was sorta fixed by getting ice from the ice machine, but not really. The bed was also too soft and I didn't get a restful sleep. But what the room lacked, everywhere else made up for. The pool was awesome with a built-in volleyball net. No screaming children meant it was truly a time to relax and have some fun. But my absolute favorite? The hot tub! Surrounded by so much shady foliage, the hot tub felt like a little tropical oasis! (By the way, by the pool, there are LEGIT banana trees growing!) If I knew for sure I'd get a room with a mini-fridge, I'd definitely stay here again, maybe just not sharing with other people. I'd love a room to myself here. It's quiet, peaceful, and colorful. read more

Well all I can say is you get what you pay for... Where do I start... the king size bed was hard and the sheets were rough Fan was dirty as well as bathroom, it needs a lot of repairs Parking was tight No iron in room, it did have a blow dryer, overall the appearance was old and dirty. However, the staff was great!! They were very helpful and made themselves available!! We didn't eat at their grill so can't rate that. The hotel was for adults only and when some young adults were being inappropriate in and by the pool, they were told to leave the area! Also let me add the air conditioner was super cold! read more

I've been coming to this place for almost 30 years through all its iterations and owners. Check in is pretty easy, sign indicates the hotel is for sales gain. Quality has gone down. Used to Be a time when trash cans in rooms were emptied, coffee and breakfast in the mornings and all this is gone. Bathroom fixtures need replacing or at least cleaned thoroughly. Towels are replaced daily, and good COVID social distancing measures. read more

We stayed a couple night. It is adult only hotel. We got to really enjoyed our quiet time with no kids screaming and running around. (Wait until I got home) there is coffee at the lobby. I wish they have breakfast menu like others cause thier food is good. Drinks is decent. The bartender is super nice for sure she know what she is doing. Room is small but that's all we need. Hotel is a minute from the beach and 10 minutes walk to grocery, Whatburger, liquor store and breakfast place. Hope to come back next year. read more

Not worth the trip! The staff claims there is WiFi, but it only works outside of the property while you can't even get a signal in the rooms. The pool is dirty and full of dead bugs, the rooms have bugs and the overall experience here is crappy at best. I'm very disappointed and I feel I've wasted money and time here. New to the island from Miami I was warmly welcomed by Michelle, their gifted, genuine bartender. And just wow - the Tropical Cocktails she creates!!!! Her fun, but strong and positive vibe emulates through the bar and pool creating a place to enjoy happy hour, chill by the pool and enjoy live music. This is an adults-only establishment and one I wish I knew about before spending all my bar time at Louie's and around that area. This place is tucked away in a residential neighborhood, so no traffic and very quiet. I visited the bar my last night there and it was just the kind of place I'd been looking for the whole time! Just a very chill environment with good music in the background; decent enough booze selection; wonderful bartender; and very clean. And they serve food! Had I known I would've tried something here for dinner and just parked my ass at the bar all evening. This place used to be the unofficial LGBTQ hotel, but anyone can stay, so most of the clientele were gay. But I had a great conversation with one guy there... Had to break it to him that I was straight when he asked. But he was a cool dude. If I come back to SPI, I'll have to see if this place is available. It was off-season when we stayed at the hotel and the daily rate was very low (even lower than the price quoted on their website when I booked). You get what you pay for, and that is certainly true at this hotel. Let's start with what was good about the hotel. The bed was comfortable, the air conditioner worked (although it was loud), there was a refrigerator in the room, and the toilet worked. Unfortunately, the bad things outweighed the good. There was no housekeeping during our stay. The only housekeeping service we received during our multiple-day stay was when two women showed up outside our room carrying a big bag of towels. They asked us if we needed fresh towels but did not offer to take away dirty towels. Around the bathroom sink, there were old splatters (perhaps from toothpaste, etc.) that had not been cleaned from when previous guests had stayed in the room. The shower worked but the water temperature was difficult to control. During our multiple days stay, the trash cans in the room and in the common areas were not emptied. Although we cleaned our feet before entering the room, the tiles in the room were covered in sand despite our best efforts. After multiple days of no housekeeping, you can imagine how gritty the floor became. The housekeeping problem also applied to the swimming pool. There were lots of bugs and garbage (likely from the adjacent public bar) floating on top of and at the bottom of the pool since it wasn't cleaned on a daily basis. We couldn't use the pool because it was so dirty. The bar was close enough to our room that the music from there bothered us at night while trying to sleep. The loud air conditioner helped mask some of that. The worst part of our stay happened after lodging a complaint with the staff. Both the staff and, later, the hotel's owner labeled us as abusive and overly demanding. We were far from it. The owner implied that, because the rate was so low, we weren't supposed to expect anything like housekeeping. She claimed we had unrealistic expectations. When we booked the room, we were not informed about the lack of housekeeping. She also claimed she was experiencing a staff shortage. While we stayed there, however, it wasn't unusual to see 3-4 hotel employees lingering around the hot tub area on the first floor. read more

THE AWESOME Went for some relaxation and fun! - The room was clean, and (as someone else mentioned in these reviews) uncluttered. - The AC unit kept the room super cool. The rocking chairs are a nice touch. - The beverage cooler in my room was a nice surprise. - I liked the little bracelet they issue to access the hotel and my room; it was convenient when my hands were full. - Also conveniently located from the hotel were the beach (about 5 min walk or 1 minute drive away), Whataburger, and liquor store down the street! - The lounge chair/umbrellas/and other accessories that guests can borrow to take down to the beach was neat. I took advantage and borrowed a chair. This easily saves you $20 on a rental. - The onsite bar/restaurant is great for drinks and lunch/dinner. They had tasty food and a yummy Pina Colada! Customer service is def good. - The Palms Cafe on the Beach is a hop and a skip away; It has a cute open air layout and they serve a yummy Eggs Benny. THE BLAH - Would've been chill to be able to take my own drinks down to the pool but since the bar is beside it, taking your own drinks is prohibited. - Bar tab and hotel guests; I didn't really want to take my wallet with me each time I went down but needed to since I knew I'd be ordering items while swimming. It would've been awesome if I could open a tab or charge items to my room. - Complimentary breakfast: This really is the only thing I think could've made my stay even more awesome. Will be returning to this place because it's unique and fun overall. Would recommend it for anyone who's looking for an inclusive and exciting place to unwind. read more

This hotel is an undiscovered oasis of adult, fun times. Having adults only is a way to relax in itself but with a great clean pool and jacuzzi and beach chairs and umbrellas to borrow it made for the most relaxing stay i have had in a while! Staff were very attentive, and friendly with cleanliness being a priority. Bar was well stocked with a great Jukebox and simple great bar food. Location was literally 2 minutes walk from the beach and being in the center of the island, every nightlife location was within an easy drive. Owners and the staff made the effort to make our stay the best it could be and meeting others of a similar mindset was awesome. highly recommended for relaxing and making the real world seem a long way away. read more

I spent three nights here with my wife for a vacation. We arrived and we were taken on a tour and then we were shown our room. Our room was extremely hot, they hadn't turned on the ac unit even though we called ahead of time to say we were on our way. All of my wife's makeup melted in the room, that's how hot it was. It didn't even melt when we were on the road for 8 hours. The bathroom was unbelievably hot since the room didn't have central ac. We could not stand to be in the room and the outside in the Texas heat felt better than the inside of the room. The floor was dirty and even the ac unit was dirty and dusty. The bed was uncomfortable and the sheets were very rough. Just plain horrible. My wife and I developed rashes from it. We found cockroaches and bugs everywhere, I have the pics to prove it! We will never return to this hotel or recommend it to anyone! You're probably better off in a cheap motel...at least they have central ac. read more

My husband and I stayed here for our mini vacation this summer. Both being teachers and working summer school we only had a little bit of time to make the perfect summer memories, and the Upper Deck hotel helped us do just that on SPI. In our eager anticipation for vacation, we arrived 2 hours prior to the check in time. Our room happened to be ready and so the nice people who greeted us at the front allowed an early check in. We were by the pool by 1:30 and happy to have this extra time. The pool party Sunday evening was amazing, and all of the staff and the guests were fun, personable and full of excitement. We met a lot of new friends and enjoyed every minute of the evening. Each day at the Upper Deck was much like when we first arrived, friendly people, perfect staff and great amenities. Our room was always clean, we had everything we needed... And we were even granted access to the items we needed on the fly ( an iron and ironing board). We had easy access to the beach (one block) and were in walking distance to stores and other restaurants. Although we did enjoy a meal at the Poolside Bar and Grill located within the Upper Deck and were definitely NOT disappointed. It seemed as if the staff here was truly a team, and they all seemed to pitch in wherever necessary showing the truly cared about what the guest needed/wanted. Their customer service was out of this world. We enjoyed ourselves so immensely that we opted to stay an additional night and were delighted that the staff was able to accommodate our last minute decision. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a perfect time on SPI. Well, unless you have kiddos because they are adults only. I didn't get a chance to actually stay on the hotel part of this place. But I did visit the bar twice this last weekend. Every time I went it was pretty slow. The drinks were good tho. I like the fact that you're given the option of jumping in the pool. There's so much more that can be done to this place to get more traffic to come in. Hopefully next time I come around there are a few upgrades. And better signage for the front of the building because it's not that easy to spot if it's your first time looking for it.
