Was looking around for months for a solid MMA gym and tried a few different ones and this one easily was the best. Also the price is very fair and the instructors are amazing. They know you are new and will help guide you with your first steps. It takes a little time to adjust to the routine and what the training is like but you will easily get a rhythm if you show up consistently. They want you to come back and they want you to improve. Also They let you try out the gym before you sign on. They have lots of gym equipment in here as well so there is no need to pay extra for another gym membership just to lift weights. There's so much I could say about Pete and this gym- but to keep a long story short- I'm grateful I ended up here of all places. I was 21 and new to LA. If you're a woman or don't fit a certain athletic stereotype, I would think twice before attending. This was my first time at the 6:00 pm clinch class with Pete Panos, and during drills his instructor told me to 'fight like he's trying to steal your food.' I found the comment inappropriate and insensitive. Instead of offering helpful instruction, it felt like a personal jab that made me uncomfortable and unwelcome. Gyms should foster an inclusive and respectful environment, especially for beginners, and this experience did not reflect that. Long overdue review! I started training with Pete when the gym was called Way of the Warrior in 2015. I fell out of going to the gym for a few years but started training here at the new facility in November 2022 and have loved the experience so far. All of the instructors are amazing and focus on what I feel like is everyone in the class. My favorite part of training BJJ here is there is no ego, which is amazing. Everyone I roll with is super nice and is very understanding on those days when I'm sore or something hurts which I appreciate. To take things up a notch, the facility is huge, clean and the overall environment is welcoming every single time I'm there. They offer classes for as low as age 4-7 & my daughter has very much enjoyed being a part of this class with Coach Manny. They offer this class 2x a week, 50 mins ea for $125, amazing deal! Uprise is so much more than a gym. When I moved to LA, I reached out to and tried out a few MMA places, but my experience with Uprise - from the first contact with the owner Pete over email - was by far the best. First, I really respected Pete's approach: he offers a free week trail and is very transparent about pricing. The matts are clean - they get cleaned and sanitized between MMA and BJJ classes. People are asked to use the sanitizing wipes to clean the pads after they've been using them, and you can use them to clean your gloves and shin guards as well. The Muay Thai and MMA classes are awesome. Everybody trains hard, lots of people come 6-7 days a week for a few hours at a time, travel to Thailand, fight amateur. Pete is a BJJ black belt and a fantastic Muay Thai and MMA coach. I like that he never skips a solid warm-up, gives helpful feedback and makes sure to correct any poor technique. The BJJ is about 60-70% no gi 40-30% gi, and it's also great. Prof. Gustavo Gasperin and Coach Pete are tremendous instructors and there are a number of black and brown belts to train with. The gym has a number of MMA fighters who train there and a bunch of folks who regularly compete in BJJ tournament. The gym definitely has a community vibe, which I really appreciated. Lots of people have been training with Pete for years. People get together to watch UFC or to go out. I moved away, but I am still in touch with Pete and lots of people from Uprise, and stop by every so often to spar or roll. I can't recommend it enough. read more

I have been training at Uprise MMA for a few months now and still love everything it has to offer. Before picking Uprise as the right gym for me, I had visited a handful of other Muay Thai/Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gyms for their free trial period. These gyms included Dynamix MMA, Westside Training Center, Uprise, and Boxing works. Dynamix and Boxing works both offered one free class while Uprise and Westside Training both offered a full week for free. I did like Westside training as it was walkable from where I currently live, however they only offer 3 Muay Thai classes a week. I ended up choosing Uprise because of the quantity of MT classes that are offered. You have an option of 2-3 MT classes every weekday and one class on Saturday mornings. Almost all MT classes are taught by Kru Pete who is very talented and gives great instruction on proper technique and form. I have also come to find that everyone at the gym is extremely friendly and very helpful in sharing their knowledge and skills with you. The gym offers heavy bags, speed bag, weights for everyday lifting, and a ring for sparring. From a price perspective, Uprise definitely isn't the most expensive nor is it the cheapest available option. But you do get your money's worth and you'll have a great time while you're at it. read more

The guy that answered the phone wasn't very pleasant or accommodating, and he hung up on me without saying a word. Just rude and not at all helpful. You're running a business, and you want to draw people in, not repel them. I guess I'll keep looking for a gym because this probably isn't the place for me. Very CLEAN matts. Today I took my first jiu-jitsu class there (more on that later). I watched the tail end of the intermediate Muay-Thai class led by Pete Panos. As soon as the class was finished over 3 students thoroughly cleaned the matts. The first student swept the entire area with a industrial size duster and then two students cleaned followed. One held an industrial size swiffer looking thing while the other student led with a spray solution of some sort. They covered every square inch. I know, I watched. And they did it with such joy and care Mr. Miyagi style. - When it was time for the BJJ class the instructions were very clear and I was paired up with someone very patient and nice. Pete Panos walked the room and gave good adjustments for my partner and myself. When it was time to "live roll" I asked the fellow students if we could "go light" (because I haven't really rolled in like 10 years) and they were cool and eager to show me some tips. At the end of the class we did the traditional bow and shake hands thing which was cool. I stuck around just a little longer and got some advice on forward rolls, shrimping, and landing drills that I can practice. This is totally the kind of gym I want to train at. I contacted Pete at Way of the Warrior several months ago looking for a personal trainer to help me lose weight and tone up. I'm not super athletic and I've mostly avoided exercise whenever possible, but I finally got tired of my flabby existence and decided it was time to get in shape. I was looking for someone who wouldn't judge me for my inability to do more than one sit up, but also wanted someone who would push me to work my hardest because knowing myself and my sweat-avoiding ways, I needed to be pushed. Pete turned out to meet these criteria perfectly. It was also great that he was flexible with meeting locations - he has his own private gym but is also willing to come to you. Pete is extremely versatile and intelligent in his training methods, and he tailors each workout to fit the individual. I've seen him in action with sweaty, "bone crushingly intense" workouts (see Kevin's review below) but he's able to slow it down when working with someone less athletic. Due to his extensive background in martial arts, we've incorporated Muay Thai kickboxing into every workout, which I really enjoy. But since I'm not looking to become the next Ultimate Fighter (I'd rather just attract one as a date), we focus more on technique and cardio, which to me is so much more fun than being hit in the face... just my opinion. Pete's also good at keeping me motivated and is constantly coming up with new and fun workouts. To my surprise I've actually found myself looking forward to each session with him and I always leave feeling good about myself. Since signing up with him I've lost 25 pounds (and still counting) and have gotten much stronger, faster, more coordinated and more confident in myself and my athletic abilities. Best of all, I'm starting to like what I see in the mirror again, which is really what it's all about. Whether you're looking for a hardcore martial arts instructor to mold you into a fighting machine or are just looking for a great trainer to help you shed some pounds and feel good about yourself, I would highly recommend Pete. Been coming here for almost two years now for both muay thai and jiu jitsu. Although I had some previous jiu jitsu experience this is the place where I got my blue best from Sensei Gustavo Gasperin. Intermediate jiu jitsu classes on Tuesday and Thursday are very good. Sensei Gustavo always starts by making sure you have the basics down before adding anything flashy to your game, which I greatly appreciate. Although I had no previous muay thai experience it has become my favorite martial art. Kru Panos is extremely knowledgeable and is always drilling fundamentals in both the beginner and intermediate classes. He is very good at keeping an eye on everyone and tailoring classes to everyone's level. You will be getting personal attention from him in every class. With all this being said what makes this the best gym in the area is the presence of Grand-Master Sensei Sifu Kru Chew. https://www.facebook.com/sifukruchew. He is Grand-Master of the gym and makes sure the gym is running to his very strict Thai standards. He has been developing his special martial art called Chew Jitsu and has been teaching some techniques to his students. I'm no bruce lee, however I would love to be. If bruce lee was still physically alive he would be MMA's biggest advocate. With the growing audience and popularity of MMA, a seed to take a martial arts class was implanted. I took a karate class in college, one session of BJJ with a friend, however I did dare call myself a martial artist. I went to go shopping for a place where they offered both hand-2-hand combat with some courses on bjj - I think to be an overall fighter in today's world - you have to know both - striking and ground. For myself, I went strictly for the Muay Thai, and not the BJJ due to my own time constraints. I would have loved to do both. My review is on my Muay Thai experience at WOTW. First of all the instructor - Pete - is awesome as an instructor - patient and constantly looking at form - striking, defense - everything. I never felt rushed or out of place. I just felt that Pete was looking out for my own interest - which was to become the best martial artist to my capabilities. On the studio, it has everything that you need to practice Muay Thai in a comfortable and clean envrionment. Focus mitts to larger pads, and the flooring of the studio was never an issue. Most of the time we were standing up barefoot, and I never once tripped or fall. To my understanding the studio has grown considerably - which is a sign that the studio is gaining popularity. As it should be. On the fellow students - great bunch. I had a couple of social gatherings with the group outside of class - once at a UFC fight at someone's apartment, and the second at a local bar for a UFC fight. Before class, after class, and during class - I did not feel any ego from anyone. I sparred a few times, and the times I did spar, my fellow classmates were in control, and all was good. I haven't been to class for quite a while, since I started a new job, and also moved farther away from WOTW. But here and there I would drive past the studio on Venice and I would reminisce on my experience. A great experience I hope to find at a new studio. For the time being, I do miss WOTW environment, people, and instructors... the only thing I don't miss is the warm-ups and sometimes, warm-downs. Maybe I'm saying this since I am really out of shape (currently as type this... my fingers are aching). But those who are looking for a martial arts studio - and you live close to the palms/culver city area... or if your commute everyday is along the path of WOTW - do drop by - and do the trial. I came to this gym with no background in martial arts and not knowing what to expect. I really wanted to try BJJ but never went for it. I am mostly experienced in the BJJ classes, so this review is about my experience on BJJ at WOTW. When I first came to Way of the Warrior I felt an awesome vibe from everyone in there, Pete is a really nice and patient guy who is always willing to help you. I started with the BJJ beginners classes with Gi and No-Gi. Little by little I moved on to the intermediate and advanced level classes taught by Sensei Gustavo Gasperin. Gustavo is an awesome instructor and a really accomplished BJJ fighter, he truly has a vocation to teach. He breaks down the steps for each technique and is always teaching you the basics, even when the technique is a bit more advanced. Pete himself and his guest coaches are really knowledgable as well, its definitely a great school to learn. It is important to note that you get a lot of personal attention from these instructors during the classes, which is awesome because it helps you progress so much more. I also regularly do the conditioning classes. These classes are awesome if you are trying to complement your training with a bit of cardio and strengthening. I don't know how is it in other gyms, but at Way of the Warrior there is a sense of family between all the students and coaches. I stumbled up the Way of the Warrior gym walking back from another ho hum gym routine at LA Fitness. They were having an open gym and I had the opportunity to speak with the owner Pete for a few minutes and I walked away uber impressed. There are certain people in this world that exude passion about what they do and that is exactly what I found in Pete. He is extremely passionate about the Way of the Warrior Training and that passion immediately made me want to be a part of what he is building. I've been thinking about writing a review for Way of The Warrior for a while now but it didn't happen because life got in a way. I finally found some time to sit down and write about this gym. I never trained, exercised, worked out, or even gone to the gym seriously before let alone training in any kind of martial art. One day I was walking my dog and saw the gym and I thought that I wanted to give it a try. Since then I never looked back. Even though I don't have any experience in martial art at all, Pete made it very easy for me to understand. Pete makes sure that everyone in either the beginner or intermediate class gets attention from him. One other GREAT thing about this gym is no one has any ego and everyone is very friendly and very helpful. The coaches/instructors are all very knowledgeable, friendly and have their own personal style of teaching so you get exposed to a variety of instruction, skill and concepts. Class schedule seems to accommodate most availabilities, we have morning classes, evening classes, and classes/open mats on the weekends. We have kids classes on Wednesdays and Saturdays as well. We cover all aspects of Muay Thai: the clinch, elbow, knees, trips/throws, boxing, and kicks. We even have a general strength and conditioning class if you want to further improve your cardio. For BJJ we train in both gi and no gi, as well as application of BJJ through wrestling/mma. I started at Way of the Warrior by doing the 1 week free trial period. I ended up going to beginner Muay Thai classes (BJJ is also offered) and really enjoyed it. First off, as a beginner all you have to do is show up. Gear is available for you to use. I found everyone in the class to be really friendly, and the instructor Pete to be welcoming and great at introducing students to Muay Thai. I was clueless, and didn't know how to properly throw a punch or kick. Even though I was in a class with probably 10 other students, Pete gave me a ton of individual attention and was patient and clear in introducing me to the fundamentals. Additionally, I liked that Pete didn't use any hard sales tactics during the trial period... it was just fun and low pressure. I've now been going to the gym for about 4 months. After that first trial week, I was hooked, and went out and bought all the gear. Pete is great at drilling the fundamentals, and progressively getting you to focus on improving your technique. Both the beginner and advanced Muay Thai classes are also incredible work outs. You leave drenched in sweat every time. My favorite aspect of the gym though has to be the positive energy everyone exudes. I think this starts with Pete who sets the example. If you start going you will notice that everyone walks into the gym with a smile. Finally, the gym is also blessed to have Grand-Master Sensei Sifu Kru Chew (facebook.com/sifukruchew) as a patron. He is a former instructor of Pete and just recently returned from Chaing Mai, Thailand where he was running a training camp and developing the revolutionary style of Chew Jitsu. I have been training Muay Thai with Pete Panos at the Way of the Warrior gym for the last 3 months and I have gone from a complete, clumsy n00b to somebody who can actually throw a decent roundhouse kick and then some. Much of the credit for that goes to Pete. His nearly 2 decades of martial arts experience is apparent in his bone-crushingly intense yet patient training methods. That being said, Pete has no problem making you feel it when you miss a block or forget to keep your hands up. One quickly takes pride in sustained bruises as a form of battle wounds. Make no mistake, Pete's basic, no-frills gym is not for the faint of heart. You wont find fancy LCD screens or linen towels here; just mats, heavy bags and sweat. A whole lot of sweat. I been doing sports my whole life, but every session at the Way of the Warrior kicks my ass. From the warm up to the burn-down, you will feel the burn. All the members of the gym are guys and girls with a common passion: training hard and fighting within the boundaries of sportsmanship. For me, a day is not complete without some sparring and icing the resulting bruises. Muay Thai has become more then kicking the thai pads; it has motivated a change towards a healthier life style to get competition ready - and the Way of the Warrior gym has been, and continues to be, the driving force behind that. I was turned away as I have to wear foot inserts/ shoes due to back pain. I spoke to the head instructor (I think) about my condition and was told I couldn't go on the mat because of "rules" that exist around going bare foot. Sucks to know they don't provide any flexibility to people with injuries/ physical issues. Other mma/boxing gyms told me it wouldn't be an issue as long as I wore clean boxing shoes. read more

What can I say. The Jiu Jitsu instructor Gustavo is a multi world champ in gi and nogi. He is a black belt under Fabricio Werdum, and is very technical with his instructions as well as patient with new students. Pete, the Muay Thai/Striking instructor is very humble and friendly. By chance, I went to check out the beginner class at Uprise MMA. Everyone is so friendly, encouraging, and respectful. Coach comes around often to give key points. I didn't feel a bit awkward even in my first class and learned a lot. I told myself I could go twice a week, then one week later I started to go three time a week, then ... I am now addicted to it and can see myself going long term. I finally find a very comfortable and joyful environment with an exercise that works on my entire body to build flexibility, strength, and coordination. Beginner classes are offered at Monday through Thursday right after work and then Saturday morning. Parking is very convenient in front of the gym. Inside beginner classes, there are a lot of working hard seasoned students. They are great inspiration. read more

I wanted to learn bjj so I came here primarily because of the price. I figured I would give bjj a one month trial. If I didn't like it, then I would quit and wouldn't cost much. I have been been at this place 8 months now. I have stayed because the instructor is really good at teaching and he looks out for newcomers. Everyone gets along and is willing to help. Looking for a gym where I could do both BJJ and Muay Thai, I tried every MMA gym within a 5 mile radius, and Pete's was the best. Simple, small class size, more one on one attention, great teachers, month to month, humble, friendly people, all levels of experience. Great workouts. I tried out a couple other gyms before this. This gym offers Muay Thai , BJJ, and MMA. I take one class of each a week to get a full range of knowledge and experience. They have barbell and weight equipment in back, as well as bags. One of my favorite touches was a bookshelf with mind provoking books. I feel really accepted here. read more

I started training here back in 2009 without any previous knowledge or training of Muay Thai and now I'm proud to say I teach the women's Muay Thai class on Saturdays! Pete has trained me to be stronger person both mentally and physically in and outside the gym.
