Where do I start?... The Thai Boxing Institute was my blessing in disguise during a hard time. I found myself stuck in a rut. I needed a change and I needed it bad. I've trained in Muay Thai before but that was pre-spine surgery and I was scared to be completely honest. Scared that I wouldn't be able to do such a intense workout, scared that something bad could happen to my back. Regardless, I took a chance and I'm so glad I did. Everyone at TBI is amazing from the coaches to the members. They are all so welcoming and helpful, they aren't intimidating or aggressive. It's truly feels like a community. They offer different levels of classes, the coaches are always around to lend a hand if you're having trouble with your moves. It's just an all around amazing gym. If you're looking into Muay Thai and you live in the area, I HIGHLY recommend The Thai Boxing Institute!

    Good ol' heavy bags.

TL;DR:TL;DR: Stop by, take a class. No gimmicky sales pitches or pressure to join. Just pure muay thai in a real laid back environment. TL;DR: - Quality, traditional Muay Thai - Only pure striking gym on the west-side - Fantastic, knowledgeable coaches - Tight-knit community - Plenty of equipment, constant gym improvements - Unique curriculum structure - Clinch classes & advanced sparring classes - Highly structured and tailored training camps for fighters - Partners of all experience levels - One - on - one time with coaches - Beginner friendly - No pressure or judgment - All ages welcome (kids classes M/W) - Great group of girls who train regularly, this is no machismo bro gym Structured Curriculum: There's a curriculum set per week that starts with the basics and compounds each day. The rotating weekly curriculum means you get a comprehensive introduction to muay thai. There's a set class structure so every workout will have a warm-up, stretching, a technical lesson portion, padwork, and conditioning/circuit training every so often. Whether it's your first class or your thousandth, you'll get a fun, engaging workout that will kick your ass (in the best kind of way). If you need even more, just ask Coach Vik and he'll help you find a way to supplement your training regiment with extra strength training, conditioning, etc. Advanced Classes: There are advanced sparring classes where you get to drill more technical combinations and do simulated fight rounds. Tuesdays and Saturdays, there are classes dedicated to just the clinch, a technical and highly under-taught part of muay thai. There's also light sparring every day between the 6 & 7pm classes if you want to try it out. Everyone's welcome to join. The focus is always on practice & progress. Everyone's just trying stuff out rather than genuinely trying to hurt each other. I'm pretty small and all of my sparring partners here are well-controlled and let me get my work in. Team of Coaches: Coach Vik comes from a long lineage of high-quality, traditional thai fighters. His curriculum combines that solid technical foundation with the latest and greatest in fight strategies and sports science. He has an open-minded, practical approach to applying muay thai. His muay thai is top-notch and he is a highly capable instructor. More than anything though, his students and their goals always come first. When a fire burned down the old location, Coach Vik was still offering classes pro-bono to students at the nearby park. He was driving fighters across town to find places and partners to train with. Even now, with a bigger, improved space, he is constantly asking for feedback and re-evaluating what can be done better. Members asked for seminars, newer equipment, more gym hours, more coaches and Coach Vik immediately found ways to provide all of that. Behind him there's a wonderful team of assistant coaches as well: Coach Miguel, Coach Nick, Coach Drew and Coach Bill are all very approachable and just as dedicated. I can't even count the amount of hours they've spent after-hours helping me out - doing extra padwork with me, giving me drills and conditioning tips or just answering questions. Great people: This is a community of people who take the sport seriously, but themselves not so much. I joined TBI as a workout noob with zero martial arts experience. Everyone was welcoming, supportive and encouraging. The coaches and older members are incredibly patient and want to teach you. It doesn't take long to see how much the team here cares about each other and this gym. There's also plenty of social outings if you want to get to know the family you train with. Holiday parties, Secret santa, Vegas trips to watch live muay thai fights, Halloween pub crawls, watching amateur fights, UFC viewing parties, parking lot barbecues or even just hanging out at the gym on the weekends. This gym has done wonders for me. I'm in the best shape of my life. I've accomplished so much more in muay thai than I ever thought possible and it is 100% because of this gym and this family.

Wish I had found out about TBI sooner. I blame the lack of social media investment, although it's getting better lately (jk..kinda). I actually found them because the new gym is located between a liquor store and pizza shop I went to a lot. Perfect location. In LA it's not easy to find a a (thai)boxing/martial arts gym with trainers that actually know what they are doing and that have extensive training/fighting experience themselves & this is where they stand out. TBI welcomes all ages, levels and ambitions. There are morning, evening and weekend classes, as well as sparring opportunities to fit everyone's schedule. Every week, the trainings focus on a certain topic that is applied throughout the training session. Trainings usually follow a certain pattern: 2x3minute round of warm-up, stretching, two rounds (each) boxing on mitts with partner, one round of bag kicking to loosen hips/legs, three rounds (each) thaiboxing on thaipads with partner & cooldown. You will definitely get a great cardio workout each time. Private trainings are also available. The gym itself is a large open room with several different types of bags in it to get your punching/kicking needs on, a squat rack, a ring, etc. What is probably the best feature about TBI is its wonderful member community. You know a group sticks together like glue when a busload of people show up to a fight to support just one fighter. They also organize activities throughout the year to just hang out together. Everyone at the gym is welcoming and offers to help you out in every way they can. Sadly, I have moved out of LA but I will try to drop by once a month because there really is no place like it.

They know you are new and will help guide you with your first steps. It takes a little time to adjust to the routine and what the training is like but you will easily get a rhythm if you show up consistently. They want you to come back and they want you to improve. Also They let you try out the gym before you sign on. They have lots of gym equipment in here as well so there is no need to pay extra for another gym membership just to lift weights. It's like a playground, you can come in and lift weights, you can practice on the bags and get better or you can take the different classes they offer all under one roof.

There's so much I could say about Pete and this gym- but to keep a long story short- I'm grateful I ended up here of all places. I was 21 and new to LA. I've struggled with weight all my life and wanted to find something to keep in shape. Thought I was going to boxing, ended up in Jiu Jitsu. I was the only girl, which can be scary. But Pete was super welcoming and treated me very equal to the guys and believed in me. I fell in love with the sport and did everything day and night- MMA, muay thai, bjj. Pete believes in people and CARES about his fighters. He's a very genuine and honest person, and his leadership trickles down into the culture. He's very much a life teacher in many ways and loves his analogies lol. I've learned so much about not just fighting, but life and the martial arts ways. Like I said, Pete and this gym has changed my life. 10/10 one of the best things that's ever happened to me!!

I had resigned myself to an understanding that I would forever live with some sort of ache or pain in my low back. That is would be there for the rest of my life. Luckily, I was wrong. Coach O has taught me how to take care of myself and my own quirks of the body so that I no longer have back pain. He also taught me how to heal myself should I make some silly mistake, which does happen. He has taught me to better understand the human body and how it works as a unit. A bonus along the way has been the improvements to me physically in other areas. I have never been over weight or out of shape. I had never been Fit before either. I have now learned the difference. I am quite fit. I have rearranged the fat in my body into muscle. I have gone from barely able to do 2 pull ups to easily knocking out 10. Coach O has an incredible amount of knowledge about the human body, its function, maintenance, and how to be the best human you can be. Because of him my quality of life is significantly improved and I whole heartedly recommend you take the time to meet with him and avail yourself of what his sharing of knowledge can do for your own life. - Jeff

He is a badass (like I would never want to be on his bad side in a dark alley - seriously, his spirit animal is Master Shifu from Kung Fu Panda), but he is so great at figuring out how to help you meet your goals. He'll push you when you need to be pushed, but also knows how to work with your specific body and needs. What's great is that working with Orion has not only put me in fantastic shape, but also given me the knowledge and tools to feel confident in what I am doing at the gym. Another thing he emphasizes is body maintenance, which as I have gotten older, has become a huge part of my routine. I've broken my body in a million different ways, but despite that, I'm the strongest I've ever been now, and I am way more mobile than I was as a youngster. The cherry on top of all this is that Orion is one of the nicest human beings in the world. He's super funny and easy to talk to, a very underrated feature in a great trainer, especially when you are spending a whole hour with them. In short, train with Orion. You'll get strong AF, have a few laughs, and maybe even start morphing into a ninja too.

My old gym membership had expired and it was time for me to figure out what I wanted to do next. I started researching some options: Yoga, Gym, Boxing, Pilates, Kickboxing, Private trainer and more. It's mind boggling but more importantly it's wallet emptying.. I was trying to find a place where I could workout whenever I wanted and not have to wait for a machine or make an appointment for a class but also not break the bank. 9Round is not only the best value compared to all the other options, but you can go anytime on any day within their hours (5am - 11pm). There are trainers there to help and guide you during specific times and there are also tv's at every station to show you how to do the workouts. There are 9 stations - and you will spend 3 minutes at each station w/a 30 second break between stations. The trainers are super helpful to show you how to do the workouts correctly, work on your form and even give you a mental push if you need/want it. The best part is you can go as often as you want, and the workouts change daily so you won't get bored of the same routine. It's very clean there and have yet to run into some of "those gym people" who are wearing makeup or cologne and want to be seen. Quick tip - if you want workout with fewer people or without a trainer on site, you can go during hours when they are not available. I usually workout between 1-3pm and it's a much quieter time.
