I have great confidence in this hospital, as far as an outstanding medical care facility. My only complaint, is how far one has to walk to reach the ICU ward. It is like a maze getting there. read more

I've been here since 3 AM, it is now 6:30pm and I still have not had any food, but given no water. This place is the absolute worst ER I have ever been to in my entire life. There is filth everywhere, the hallways are littered with literally 50 patients in various stages of dress and undressed in chairs on gurney in hospital, ambulance trolleys, it's a mess. I was transferred here from the VA hospital, still wondering why they would even accept me as a patient if they couldn't provide services. The nurses are left with an undaunting task, and being asked to do their jobs with their hands and feet tied behind their backs. This place deserves to loose its accreditation. Yesterday, was the worst time I had in the Emergency Room that you could imagine. Upstate Med. in Syracuse is far the worst Hospital in CNY. My husband's feeding tube fell out when I tried to feed him at nine AM. We got to the Hosp. at 10:10 am. When they did call us in, we were kept in a hallway. Hours go by and not one Dr. came to him. Our nurse kept asking a Dr. to see us. Around 1:20 pm, I heard a Dr. loudly say, "Unless someone stops breathing or is dying, they can wait." He was around the corner from us and dashed into a room. I didn't see his face, but I know it was meant for us. He wanted us to hear it. I went to a charge nurse and asked if my husband can at least have an IV put in for hydration. (His last feeding was 7pm the night before.) She said She couldn't do it until a Dr. saw him. Change of shift-4pm, still nothing. My nurse went and got the new charge nurse, still no response. As she walked away, the back of her sweatshirt said, "Start shutting your mouth." What ??? Is that the new professional look in a Hospital ???? I wouldn't of been able to wear something like that where I worked. My nurse again went back to where the Dr.'s were sitting and asked again. She came back and said- they said, "We heard this 5x's already." She told them, can I get that in writing ? She was pissed too. A new charge nurse came to us and said, Hell or high water, we will get someone to look at him. Finally, around 6pm, a female Dr. came to talk to him. She said she would try to put it in. She couldn't do it. She called for a surgical team. They couldn't do it either. They said the track to his stomach closed and it should of been done right away, as soon as it came out. It is now 8:30pm. My husband looked dehydrated, lips full of dry skin- very tired. Our nurse came back and said IR (radiology) would have to do it with contrast, so he will have to stay overnight. Again, I pleaded for an IV. They put it in 9pm !!! Almost 12 hours later. In between all this, I was crying, angry, and saying loudly that the Dr.'s were cowards for not trying to help him. My Italian was a ten. I would advocate for my patients without a second thought, but it comes to your husband- that's another story. The incompetence was without no end. Having at least 10-12 people lying in hallways with no dignity and exposed to others is disgusting ! I just hope I die in my sleep than to deal with this bullshit. read more

We experienced horrendous care and chaos at Upstate Hospital's Emergency Room. The facility was filthy--there was blood on the floors and walls, and a bloody tampon left on the bathroom floor. My close family member had a life-threatening emergency that was brushed off by upper level staff. She was in excruciating pain--worse than childbirth--and was not given any pain medication until an hour before surgery a waiting ten hours in pain that was unbearable. This delay in proper treatment ultimately resulted in surgery that was performed too late, causing a long-term health concern. The doctor that performed the surgery said that if the surgery took place faster the long term health problems would not have taken place. Meanwhile, high-level executives make over a million dollars a year, yet patients are subjected to long waits. The staff are working thier fingers to the bone. Something is seriously wrong here. The ER is filthiest "medical" facility I have ever experienced. Other than one young lady at the check in desk (who only showed up when I was leaving) - a completely apathetic and miserable staff. I can't stress the apathy enough. Intake nurse: Pain level? 8 or better. Severe localized pain in my right lower abdomen with profuse vomiting for 5 hours; I couldn't stand up straight the pain was so bad. It was agony. When I told her that I was having difficulty breathing due to severe pain and was afraid I was going to pass out - she sent me back to the waiting area and said she'd check with a triage nurse regarding pain meds - who never came out after an hour and a half of waiting. The waiting room was covered in bodily fluids and the stench of urine throughout the waiting area was pervasive and stifling. The bathroom, which I needed only to vomit from extreme pain and near sepsis, was a disgusting cesspool of urine and fecal matter- everywhere (not limited to the toilet). Used paper litter everywhere around the floor and smears of something on the walls - I don't even want to guess what it was. After an hour and a half of agony I asked how much longer the wait was. I was told it would be about another 7 1/2 hours. The only three people of about 8 in the waiting area that looked to really need help left at the same time I did. One man had severe facial cuts and was bleeding the entire time we were there. The remaining patients were literally sleeping on the chairs and floor and seemed to be in happy to have a warm place to shelter on a cold night. Luckily, immediately after leaving, I went to Auburn Community Hospital - where I was given pain meds and an emergency appendectomy. A minute away from a perf. The staff at Auburn was kind, caring, clean, and amazing. I can't say enough good about Auburn's ER staff, the nurses on 4C, the imaging techs, and the surgical team. I wouldn't recommend Upstate ER to anyone ever no matter the circumstances! You're better off throwing yourself in front of an ambulance going to another hospital if you really need care. I can't stress how bad it really was with words. Just walking in that place made me want to boil myself in hot water to get rid of the bacteria that resides happily in that filth. read more

There are three urology care providers at Upstate that in my opinion are the worst ever. One is a resident that made my cystoscopy the worst medical experience I ever had in my life due to pain and disregard for privacy and dignity. The other is a female urologist in her early 40's that was supposed to supervise that resident during my procedure and paid more attention to her computer in the corner than she did supervising the resident or to the care I was getting from the rude nursing staff. The last is a urologist in his 70's that should have retired years ago because due to his very outdated way of treating patients with respect. He is not up-to-date on privacy laws. Males get treated VERY different than females. In my opinion he is a pervert. I'm sure there are other urology care providers that are good but these three need to go. read more

Although I was a Surgeon at SUNY Upstate University Hospital, I am now retired and independent of it. When on staff I only occasionally received care there. But now I turn there, as needed. Just referring to in-patient type services, I chose Upstate for treatment osteomyelitis (2019) and expect that I will be getting a pacemaker change in the near future (referral from Crouse practitioners). Needless to say I have experience with receiving in-patient medical care out of town, including: Boston, Rochester NY and Toronto. I was sent to this emergency department by my dermatologist when I arrived at his practice for surgery with level 9-10 pain. He was concerned that I might have a heart attack or go into severe shock from my pain. I was never admitted. I was put on a gurney in the hallway next to an active construction site, with only a plastic tarp between me and the construction. I was severely behind on my fluids (dehydrated) but despite telling every doctor and nurse this, I was never given water, or even ice chips. They did not run any bloodwork on me, or any kind of test at all. I described my issue- numbness and severe nerve pain down multiple nerves in my leg, burning skin and a feeling of overwhelming coldness. Pain from my back to my ankle. Crushing pain in my groin, thigh, and knee. Literally the worst pain I have ever experienced in my life. Worse than labor, worse than broken bones, snapped ACL, severe back injury. My blood pressure was extremely high, according to the EMTs who brought me there, not that they checked at the hospital. They wrote down that I was "complaining of back pain." I told them it was something seriously wrong, that it had started 3.5 weeks ago and I wasn't sure what caused it, that all I had done was shave my legs and do laundry. I told them it was some sort of acute injury that was getting worse every day. They wrote that I hurt myself shaving my legs 1.5 months ago, and that I had "chronic pain." I told them I was afraid my body might go into shock from this. They told me they didn't have room and weren't going to admit me. They put some lidocane patches on me and gave me a shot of antiinflammatory. When that did nothing, they put a shot of ketamine in my rear. The resident, who sounded like he was reciting something out of rote memorization, asked it I was feeling better. I said I was really stoned but still in pain, and that the moment the ketamine wore off, I was going to be right back to screaming and being in danger of a heart attack. They wrote that I said I was "feeling much better." I said no such thing. Then they forced me into a wheelchair, which was absolute agony, and dumped me off at the curb. The nurse was hostile and acted like I was doing something wrong by being there. I guess they thought I was a drug seeker. They sent me with a referral to spine and brain, who said I had to go to bone and joint instead, and then bone and joint said I had to go to spine and brain. I don't know if it was spine and brain or the ER not writing the referral properly, but I couldn't even get an appointment out of that. I understand that the hospitals are overloaded, everyone is burnt out and overworked, underpaid and understaffed. I have friends who are in medicine. I get it. I hear you. But this was negligent. Shout out to the one nurse who was not mine, but who was kind to me, however. She brought me a warm blanket and gently tucked it around me. She expressed empathy and compassion. I wish I knew who she was, because I would give her 5 stars for her kindness. Anyway, looks like I have complex regional pain syndrome, which is one of the most painful medical conditions a human being can suffer from. And yeah, I could have died from shock or a heart attack. So. Don't go to this ER unless you have no other choice. They don't have enough room and staff to provide adequate medical care. read more

Do not take your children there - or any other children's hospital for that matter! they have doctors who 'specialize' in child abuse and if anything is wrong with your child, anything, they will find some reason to call it abuse and report you- then CPS and the child abuse pediatrician will make your life hell. They will blame you for not being a good parent, for failure to provide adequate guardianship, etc. Then CPS will kidnap your child and put them into foster care - which is a cash cow for every county. My Mother has been inpatient for over a month in oncology and this is a place of healing at every level. The staff are professional and compassionate, the facilities are state of the art. Everyone is positive and upbeat. We feel very fortunate to have Mom in such an expert facility. read more

First of all, let me start by saying that the nurses were very friendly and did what they could do to make my stay comfortable. It was obvious to me that they were bound by whatever limitations the hospital had. I went in because of chest pains on a Friday afternoon (Memorial Day weekend) and was admitted for observation. The nurses and the techs monitored me through the night. I was told that evening that I would have an echocardiogram and possibly a stress test within the next 12 hours (this was Friday at 6pm). Finally at around noon the next day, the attending physician came in and told me that the tests would be done that afternoon and I would probably be released around 5 or 5:30 that evening. Other than the nurses (who didn't have any information), that was the last I heard from them. When I did question what the problem was, I was told that it was a Saturday, and even worse, Memorial Day weekend and they didn't have anyone that could perform the tests. The idea that people have to schedule illness around a weekend or a holiday weekend is ludicrous to me. They were suggesting that I would need to spend an extra night or two at the hospital just to wait for someone to be able to administer a couple of tests. I ended up checking myself out of the hospital not before signing a liability release form. Horrible hospital. Avoid at all costs! read more

My quadriplegic son went to the ER here and was not allowed his direct support physical caregiver. The nurse BEV lied that he would have a care aid at his side. We confirmed the person was in and out. He is unable to use a call bell or even pull up the covers if he was cold. The nursing supervisor was useless. She said the staff nurses ran everything and that the visitor guidelines on the hospital website had changed last week but hadn't been updated. Worst of all ( and this happened last May ) they gave antibiotics well before obtaining urine cultures. Last time, they did this and OF COURSE Nothing grew out. But of course they kept him in for an extended stay of antibiotics waiting for the cultures which never grew anything. This place is DANGEROUS to the disabled. And....practices medical MALPRACTICE so it can profit. read more

My mother worked here for 25 years, and thus had insurance through them, and when she got cancer they were trying to kick her out as soon as possible, due to them not making any money off her. She ended up having five ports to drain abscesses from her liver, otherwise she'd go septic. She was home for a week, and was able to communicate just fine, one of the tubes broke so she had to go back to get it fixed, despite the hospital not wanting her back. That night the gave her fentanyl when she had FIVE abscesses leaking toxins. After that she was no longer coherent and was essentially braindead. Shortly after they kicked her out again to just wait for her to die. read more

I wish that I could give two separate reviews. The ER is atrocious. My mom spent 8 hours in horrendous pain in the ER after breaking her arm (due to several weeks of radiation on a tumor in her elbow). I can't express how sad it makes me to think of my mom, a breast cancer patient at the time, sitting for hours in pain in your ER. She and my dad honestly considered walking down the street and calling an ambulance to get her a bed faster. That's no joke, and I hope that whoever runs your ER is embarrassed and makes real changes when you read this (and the review from Lilliana H about your ER as well). My four star rating is actually for the oncology and surgery departments. You are amazing. Thank you for your care during the two weeks that my mom was there after breaking her elbow. Even though her prognosis was grim (she lived only another six weeks after breaking her arm), you cared for her, helped her shave her head when her hair was beyond saving, and replaced her elbow so that she could spend the last few weeks of her life pain free with her family. She cuddled with her grandchildren again (she could not have done that without her elbow replacement), held our hands, and was able to have conversations and meals with us relatively pain free. I cannot thank you enough for those few weeks with her. Words cannot express our gratitude. read more

If I could rate a 0, I would. I brought my son the other morning after he woke up with cold sweats and a fever of 101.8. After a long wait, they finally called back; the nurse said, what brings you in. I explained to her how he was just as healthy as a horse, and an hour or so later, he looked very flushed, with pain in his eyes, sore throat, and was running a fever. The doctor replies with a shrug, followed by so, what is the concern for bringing him in because " of course, what do parents know."... I was puzzled by that question. I was concerned that my son was fine one minute and had a temperature spike, could not keep his eyes open because of no sleep because of the pain, he had chills, cold sweats, and nausea which is pretty concerning for any parent, significantly when the temperature would not drop below 99.4, bouncing between 99.4 and 101.8. Three doctors came to talk to us about the same thing; why did we come in? The first lady was really nice and seemed concerned for my son, explaining more doctors would be coming in. But, from the following two dr.'s it went blah. -I repeatedly said he had a NEGATIVE home test for COVID-19 *paperwork still reads positive home test even though I would correct them every time they said it. -Immediately called it COVID-19 without even touching, testing, or listening to anything I said about the situation. -They said the symptoms match... I responded with, "the symptoms match a lot of things" she said It was a virus by any means, and their test would test for 16 different viruses *My son was NEGATIVE for all the tests! I thought bringing my son to the most accredited children's hospital, he would be taken care of....instead, he was sent home believing he had covid, still sick as hell for two more days, and they gave him Tylenol; Motrin, and Zofran! read more

I'd like to start out by saying that I usually only use "yelp" to review others experiences but, I was compelled to write a review from my own experience at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, NY. I had previously brought my 67 year old mother to a different hospital which was more local on two separate occasions pertaining to her non stop diarrhea and vomiting and had been discharged. (The diarrhea had been going on for months but the vomiting at this point was over 7 days). When her symptoms returned, much more severe, I decided to take her to Upstate Hospital, (seeing as how it's a larger hospital with many different levels of medical professionals, I thought we could get to the bottom of this). The ER was absolutely atrocious, vomit and other bodily fluids left, unattained by the staff until someone from maintenance came. I understand they are busy but that is just unacceptable. One of the 1000 doctors who finally took the time to stop chit-chatting with the nurses came over to my mother covered in vomit asked when she had her gastric bypass?, (clearly he had the wrong chart). Finally she was admitted 5 hours later due to the lack of open available rooms, which I understand completely..but ya think anyone could give her fluids or anything to help cease the vomiting and continual diarrhea...NOPE...fast forward two days later, my mother was so sick, my father and I both thought that we were going to lose her, not one doctor in sight so it took me, going to the nurses station and being her advocate to get some help for her, and tests ran that PERTAINED to the area of concern! They kept re-running the same tests that the other hospital had already done and my mother's health was rapidly declining...the next day, the doctor that was doing rounds came up to see my mom and saw NOTHING on the notes from the GI doctor who "examined her" and was about to discharge her!!! If it wasn't for the compassionate and dedicated nurse Darcy on floor 5B, and Dr.Hess, she would've gone home when we still had no answer and not one GI test ran! I'll wrap this up by thanking both Dr.Hess and Darcy for being her advocate when I was at work that further testing was needed. But all and all, my experience with the "GI Team" was awful. From what I observed, there was a lack of communication between the staff from Different departments who were treating the same patient and CNAs running around like chickens with their heads cut off. We will be going to Strong hospital in Rochester where the staff there doesn't leave nurses aids alone to run IVs and Draw blood without assistance from any RNs or doctors and who don't dismiss their patients! I've had nothing but wonderful experiences at Strong, for routine annual checkups which were extremely thorough and, when I've had to bring a family member for an appendectomy. The standard of care at Strong exceeded my expectations and was highly disappointed with SUNY Upstate in Syracuse, New York. Coming from Auburn, the extra drive time, in my opinion, is worth the wait! read more

Was in the E.R. Friday night. Unable to keep liquids down. Was greeted promptly and taken back to triage very quickly. The triage RN was very patient and super kind. I was very ill with potential food poisoning . ( was confirmed at my Discharge ) The ER nurses and doctors were top notch. Can't say enough about how excellent they were. Needed a liter of Saline & some sublingual Rx for nausea. They made sure I was able to drink and sent me home to recuperate. read more

Crappy ER. Sent me away in pain pregnant. I ended up needing surgery to remove my gallbladder. I went to them multiple times and was always ushered out with some other diagnosis even anxiety. I was given antibiotics for a UTI, when it was gallstones! How absurd is that. Well I went to Crouse for a second opinion and I am glad I did. Their ER treated me with integrity, respect, and got me the SURGERY I needed. Shame on you University Hospital! read more

I have been to this hospital probably for a total between surgeries, and other heart stuff. I went to the ER for chest pain, I have a history of aortic dissection. I was rushed in, had a CT. I had to get another open heart aortic root replacement, and aortic graft. I had Dr. Fink as my surgeon, he is amazing. He saved my life multiple times. As for the nursing team on the cardiac floor, they go above and beyond their job. read more

Upstate ER staff saved my life. Cortland hospitol almost killed me. Had a kidney stone and cortland didn't give me an antibiotic and sent me home with anti nausea pills and pain med. A doctor latter told me infection and kidney stones go hand in hand. 1 1/2 days later I went back to cortland and then flown to upstate . My blood pressure was 29/20 and I had septic shock. If it were not for the terrific staff I would have died. I wouldn't go anywhere else but upstate. My husband was in the room watching them work all night on me non stop. Thanks. Sad hospital. When I was a paramedic UMC was the best around. Oh it was old but the clerks, nurses and even the clean up staff were top notch. I went in last night with my grandson who COULD NOT breathe effectively. He was having an athsma attack and was quickly declining. In all cases of breathing difficulty it is considered a real emergency until diagnosed otherwise. However we were greeted with apathy. No one was in a hurry and the triage nurse was no where to be found. When we insisted another health professional come or we be let back for treatment the clerk said 'Hold your horses mom' Only when i physically threatened the woman did she find a nurse who whisked us back where we were immediately pounced upon by all the staff that were huddled around a single computer watching something funny. It seemed there were only 2 other patients and they were non life threatening ( sickness, illness and a check up cause they didn't have a family doctor) The waiting area was filthy as was the entry hallway and the area where ambulances arrived. There was NO housekeeping staff in sight the entire time we were there. So the place remained filthy. I had to walk thru a secured door with a metal detector and had to throw my 1 inch blunt ended nail file away as I was deemed a security threat. In the meantime 2 police walked thru the place with a criminal with guns and tasers and pepper spray but I was the threat holding a child! If it is so scary to go to the ER you may as well close it. My recomendation is call an ambulance every time you had to go there. That way you bypass the filthy waiting room, the keystone cops at the metal detector and the snarky overpaid clerk. read more
