The total invoice was $698 for approximately 15 minutes on site: $199 for the after hours service call and an additional $499 to turn a ball valve back on. As a fellow service contractor, I completely understand the added cost of providing after-hours service. Technicians deserve to be compensated for leaving their families and responding outside normal business hours. That said, I felt $499 on top of a $199 after-hours fee for turning a valve was more than excessive. I called the owner directly hoping we could have a contractor to contractor conversation about the charge, but he was unwilling to make any adjustment. We paid for the service and take responsibility for why the plumber was needed. My concern is simply the pricing, and I think potential customers should be aware of what an after-hours call can cost.
