February 21 -- Seventy-five days later, I walk into the store. A very nice woman greets me. "Hi. When is our bed going to be delivered?" "Hmmm....Sometime in early March." "You guys told me 6-8 weeks." "I don't have any record of that." "That's what was told to us." "Well, let me check on that." Mind you, the woman who waited on me was very nice and professional, so a bonus star for that. But I think waiting 13 weeks for a piece of furniture--especially when I was told the wait would be roughly half that--is excessive. No. Seriously. I realize that this is not Ikea. I do understand having a waiting period for well-built stuff. I really do. But houses are built in less time. Handel took only 24 days to write The Messiah. The entire invasion of Iraq took place in less than a month. A quarter of the year has slipped past. However, this is what happens when your furniture is made in China. So, right now, our bed is likely sitting in a container in Long Beach. And if there is some ding in the furniture, then we'll be waiting another 13 weeks. So if you're looking to buy furniture, forget what the salespeople tell you. Expect a wait.

When we did go back recently the store had a bit of a remodel. It was nice, but just did not have the same feel as before. Prices on items tended to be a bit more hefty and the selection seemed more, how can I say,... "tan?" We went on a Saturday, which used to be a very busy time for them. But this time the store only had a couple of shoppers. Just couldn't put my finger on it, but it just didn't seem as interesting or inviting. The staff seemed a bit standoffish as well. I suspect if we are back down that way, we may stop by. Just don't think this will be a planned destination any longer.

I wanted the Catnapper Transformer because it was made in America, real leather, and all three seats have a retractable foot rest and the backs recline. I had never seen a three seat couch where all three seats recline! I called the day before to find out if this item was available on the showroom floor and I couldn't have gotten a friendlier person on the phone to help me. She was like Aunt Bea brought all of the way to 2019 to help out a man in need. The next day I went down there in a hurry to try this bad boy out for myself. Now remember, I've sat on about every couch in Birmingham by this time so I know just what I'm looking for in terms of the perfect firmness/cushiness and the look I wanted the leather to have. She encouraged me to sit on it any way I wanted to and even stretch all of the way across it! She showed me a few more items in the store to make sure this one was what I wanted but i was sold on this beauty from Mississippi. They threw in delivery for free and I bought an extended warranty on top of the manufacturer warranty because I want this to last me the long haul and my family ain't too easy on the furniture. Do yourself a favor and check out Standard when you are shopping for furniture. Unless you like to pay way too for crappy furniture and get pushed around by know nothing sales people. I am not an easy client and like most married couples, my wife and I don't always agree. This makes working with us no walk in the park. I have ALWAYS felt heard, I have always been treated with professionalism, I have always felt whether I have purchased or not, wanting to come back and shop again. Selection: You can't talk about selection without also talking about quality of merchandise. There are only a few furniture retailers in Birmingham that are worth shopping at if what you want is excellent quality. Scandinavian Design has that quality. Don't get me wrong, if you have a lower budget, they have excellent selection also. But if what you want is something that will last and look great for decades, you are in the right place. Like most great furniture stores, some items can be purchased off the floor and others have to be ordered. Either way, you always get what you want. Value: Everyone looks at value differently. The best way to express why I think Scandinavian Design is a GREAT value is to explain what I just purchased. We were looking for a bedframe for a new high-end mattress we just purchased. We looked online like everyone else and none of what I say hit me. I could by cheap and get the job done. At this stage in my life, I want quality and service. So we went to Scandinavian Design. I walked the store as I always have "Lusting" for the Stressless Couch I always wanted, and my wife won't let me purchase. There in the back was a Zero Gravity, Massage, automated pedestal with ALL the bells and whistles. The mattress on it was a Tempa Petic which is also VERY High End. The sales associate hit the Massage Button on the wireless remote and the decision was made instantly. I asked for the price and to have my wife join me. The price was reasonable, part of that is Teresa and staff are always fair. I also believe we should always buy in the town we live it. That is were the personalized service is the best. When I went home, I did my normal research and found that unit had a better model. I called Teresa and asked if they sold the "Top-Of-The-Line" model in that brand. She said yes, I said can you sell me that and just charge me more. She said of course. Folks, if you read my Yelp and Google Reviews. I am not always as kind as I am here. I am ALWAYS honest and always consider being accurate as my strength. Teresa, her staff and her business is the "Best of the Best". Just my two cents.

I still have many of the items purchased over the 30+ years (some let go because of moving) so that speaks to the quality sold there. In addition to the stores's fabulous inventory, the customer gets one-on-one design services from its professional decorators at no extra cost. I've worked with Theresa over the years and she knows my style. She remembers what I have purchased and recommends things that work with what I already have. Another service they offer is their furniture delivery. They don't call it "white glove delivery" but that is what it is. The bottom line is everyone connected to the store really cares. I would describe this store as an affordable luxury contemporary store with unique items. It is a valuable resource and I don't know what I would do if it was not here.

I ordered a sofa after a friend of mine…read moretold me where she got hers from ( it was by far the most comfy sofa I had ever sat on!) so in 2017 I went out and ordered it ( King Hickory ) but they sell several USA made brands . These are 8 way hand tied sofas which is how they feel so awesome lying or sitting on ! It's not imported garbage , but hand made in NC. I got to pick out everything from the fabric ( Shannon is a huge help & I put no pressure at all on me ! ) to the extra deep type sofa I wanted ( I have 4 dogs one is 120 lbs so I wanted enough room he could sit or lie on my sofa w me if he wanted ). Five years later , my sofa is like new .I wanted a nice comfy ( down filled cushions like my sofa ), so last summer I went back and tried out 15 different chairs that were my taste & settled on another "king hickory "chair and a half with ottoman . I was even able to add another booster pillow for my lower back in sofa fabric. Shannon let me know up front it could be 9 months to a year until it was here , and sure enough I got an email today (about 8 months later )to tell me to expect delivery next month! I cannot recommend this company enough. I believe Shannon is an owner ,but everyone I've ever had her me has been phenomenal! They're super nice but put no pressure on you to up grade to leather etc like a lot of companies do. I changed my mind about 4 x in the store on fabric & she was so patient ! As I said , I had such a good experience with them in 2017 I knew I'd drive out there as soon as I wanted a reading chair. I'd never buy anywhere else ! I live in Crestline & Trussville location is about 20 min from me so worth the trip !
