Giving four stars because Jake hasn't ended up doing any electrical work for us yet, but he is definitely on our list of people to call. We had work done by a contractor on our new place before we moved in, and some of the electrical work was sub-par and needed to be redone. Since badly done electrical work is a safety issue, we wanted to have the redone work checked by another electrician to verify that it was redone correctly and safely. Jake picked up the phone when I called and was able to come out later that week, despite being in the middle of a huge job (which luckily was nearby, which I think helped). He quoted us a price of $100 to check all the work, which considering the amount of work done throughout the house was very reasonable. Jake came out and looked at everything, verified that while some of the work was amateurish it wasn't unsafe, and then waived his fee and didn't even charge us! Jake from Urban contacted me today. He said they are only a 3 man shop and get some 300 calls a week, hence why it took a few weeks for him to get back to me. So, I can't speak for the work that they do since I ended up booking another company. I can say that it is very likely they will not get back to you in a short period of time (took weeks for me) so I would call other companies while you wait, especially if it's a time sensitive project. read more

Due to some personal circumstances I had to push back the time and then I didn't call and it was a communication mess. That being said Jake did the impossible. He was able to push a gas line further into my ceiling and secure a pendant light in my kitchen. I had an electrical problem with one of my light switches, as it started to smoke when I turned it on. I was freaked out about an electrical fire and called Urban Power at 7:15am expecting to get an answering machine, but Jake picked up. He was out there by 11 am and by 11:30am everything was fixed. I had a very positive experience with Urban Power's Jake Cortright. I hired him based on a recommendation from someone. It was an extensive project which involved installing new power outlets in every room, installing new wall sconces, reading lamps, track lighting, wall mounting tv s and changing many light fixtures. It took more than 2 weeks and Jake alone did all the work, Jake is a licensed electrician, very competent and stands by all his work. He knows what he's doing - he answered all my questions and tried to guide me when I was unsure about something. More importantly he's a nice guy- very amicable, polite, professional and easy to talk to. When I didn't like how someone was going, I'd express my concerns and he'd take care of them. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Jake very highly to whoever needs some electrical work done. As a side my advice for anyone considering hiring an electrician for a big project is that you should detail all the work that you want done and discuss pricing, timing, scheduling etc so that both parties are on the same page. Also plan the placement for each fixture. (One big mistake I made was not knowing the correct heights at which I should get my night lamps installed for bedside reading. As a result I now have bedside reading lamps which are impossible to reach from the bed.) read more

Called them on Tuesday, and they came out on Thursday. We bought a house and didn't have power in one room. Luckily, the issue was not as complex as we thought. They came 2 hours earlier than our appt, they let us know they were coming early. It took much less time than their 2hr minimum, and they asked if anything else needed to be done/looked at. Jake is a stand up guy. I called him because I (thought) I needed a circuit breaker replaced and he was at my place in 10 minutes-- on Friday at almost 6pm! After flipping the breaker a certain way (I swear I'd done that), the lights were back on. He was only in my apartment about 3 minutes, but still didn't charge me (which I know plenty of other people would have). So, thanks Jake. You rock. I found Urban Power on yelp and called them to install three light fixtures and check a third that hadn't been working for a while. They made a same day appointment and came earlier than quoted (which I confirmed in advance would be fine). Jake and an apprentice came in, got the lay of the land and hopped straight to work. When the apprentice encountered some strange wiring leftover from the last fixture, he consulted Jake for advice. FYI READ: Bummed, so sorry I can't give a higher review. Called to see if I could make an appointment for a service call-we need an outlet replaced, two wall switches replaced and a quote for hanging a ceiling fixture. The owner answered within a few rings so getting a real person is great (remember Jake you should ALWAYS answer with your company name if you're using your cell for business!) and after I described the work info he did say he was swamped and can't get to any jobs till the spring. I also told him I found him on Yelp and the other reviews mentioned the same problem and I was hoping I would be lucky enough to get in! No luck. Dang it, they were literally right down the street from me too. Hmm, I know Jake, maybe you can get a separate number for your current customers and get another one for new ones where you can just leave a message that says you're not taking on new business?? Would save the Yelp peeps even just a little bit of time, one less number to call from the list of HUNDREDS of electricians in the ChiTown area. Save yourself the trouble and look elsewhere. I Contacted Urban Power to have electrical work done and made an appointment for mid-week, which I had to take the day off of work for. Jake cancelled 2 hours before the appointment without giving any reason why. When I asked when he would be able to reschedule it for he told me he would get back to me when he reached his office but never did. Re-reading the reviews on here it seems it probably is another case of friends and family plugging a business for him. read more

He confirmed an appointment date via e-mail (which worked wonderfully because I was off that day). He then came early.
