I had a great overall experience at Hammer & Nails. The shop definitely lives up to its "luxury…read moregrooming for men" vibe--I left feeling relaxed and taken care of. My haircut with Chrissy was amazing. She was warm, friendly, and easy to talk to, and the conversation made the whole experience even better. She really set the tone for a great visit. The front desk staff (I'm sorry I forgot her name) was also very welcoming. She took the time to introduce the services and even gave me a tour, which I appreciated. The only part of my visit that didn't quite match the rest was my pedicure. The technician--Arlene or Marlene, I believe--seemed to rush through the session. She had a headphone in, which I don't mind if it helps her focus, but the overall experience felt a bit quiet and less engaging. I would've appreciated more check-ins, like asking if everything felt okay or if I had any specific concerns (for example, areas like calluses that I wanted extra attention on). That said, everyone was very nice, and I still left feeling pampered. With just a little more attention to detail during the pedicure, this would've been a perfect experience.

I've been testing out new salons since moving here with the hope of finding one I really like that…read morealso doesn't break the bank, and had high hopes for this one based on the reviews. I only ever do simple cuts, nothing fancy. My haircut, done by Anderson (a level 3 stylist), is objectively good. The skill was there. But it's definitely shorter than I wanted it. Went in for a lob, came out with an asymmetrical bob...Honestly I was panicking while he was drying it because it was starting to look like Lord Farquaad from Shrek. I asked if he could style it like in the reference pictures I showed (simple waves, to reduce Farquaad-ness). He tried to do it with the brush/dryer, which obviously wasn't working, and didn't want to use a flatiron. So I just suffered through scalding heat on my scalp and hair pulling. I got told I don't have curly hair. I got told I don't have frizzy hair. I, in fact, have both of those. Some other minor things: 1. When I got home I had some hair that was noticeably longer than the rest, like it never got cut. So...I had to do it. Just a few strands, but normally stylists check for that when your hair is dry. 2. I almost never use heat on my hair, so I asked for recs and mentioned a specific brand doesn't work for me. He immediately said he loves that brand. I said yeah...but it doesn't work for me. Anything else? "Any salon brand." Cool. Not helpful. 3. Asked for something at the end to tame the pieces that were sticking out (again, I have frizzy hair). He looked...confused? Smoothing as a last step has been standard at every other place I've been to. There is nothing in the whole salon like that? Also, my introvert-self just wants to go somewhere where I don't have to be engaged in conversation the whole time. Anyway. Won't go back, my hunt continues.

While it was out of our way (it's not accessible by metro), we chose it due to the easy to use website, straightforward pricing, great reviews on google and customer images that were exactly the style we were looking for. And WOW... the commute was 100% worth the cost of an Uber ride. We booked with Frank and couldn't believe the magic hands this man has! hahaha. Frank is funny, kind and was super helpful bringing both his expertise and listening skills to the table. We showed up with a few samples of what we wanted and Frank worked his magic on my friend's hair and beard. I also was super annoying recording everything for TikTok (haha!) because, well, we wanted to make a funny video of the experience for our friends - and Frank was so fun to work with. He even jumped in some pictures with us at the end. Most important, my friend got so many compliments on his new look afterwards. I highly recommend Barber Effect and Frank!

    ### 1-Star Disaster at Barber Effects (more like Defects) - Avoid at All Costs!…read more I walked into this barbershop today hoping for a fresh look, showing the barber a clear reference photo of a curly mullet - you know, that trendy, layered style with volume on top and length in the back. What did I get? A buzzed-to-the-bone disaster that looks like it was done with a weed whacker. My curls? Gone. My mullet dreams? Obliterated into a generic, ultra-short crop that makes me look like I lost a bet. Shocked, I flagged down the owner/barber to complain. He took one look, agreed it was "very short" (understatement of the year), and offered to comp the service as an apology. Fair enough, right? But here's where it gets messy: the original barber (JC, as I later learned) didn't even bother lining up my hairline. It's crooked as hell around my temples and neck - like a toddler drew it with crayons. Total amateur hour. I politely asked for JC's name to reference in my feedback, and the owner/barber straight-up grilled me: "Why do you need his name?" I explained I was leaving a review to warn others. His response? "Please don't do that." When I stood my ground and said I absolutely would, he flipped the script - threatened to charge me (and did) for the haircut anyway, and topped it off by calling me "spoiled" as I walked out the door. Spoiled? For expecting a basic competence from a professional service? This place is a joke. Rude staff, zero accountability, and haircuts that ruin your day (and your self-esteem). Save your money and your sanity - go literally anywhere else. JC and the owner/barber should be ashamed. Never again.
