Told my barber Inyoung I liked my current hairstyle but just wanted to trim it an inch or so shorter to maintain it, and explained how I'd had it cut in the past. She asked no questions and I assumed she understood, but clearly that was not the case. She proceeded to butcher my hair beyond recognition, cutting it jagged and inconsistent. Will not be back. I've been getting my haircut from Steph for a few years now and it seems like every time it's my new favorite cut. She somehow gets better with every cut. it's crazy. whether I'm asking for a fade, taper, layer, etc. she always knocks it out of the park and gives great consultative advice. I came here a few months ago after my barber just disappeared on me. I heard a lot of great things about this place so I knew I had to try it out so I booked a cut online with Josue which was super easy. It was super easy to explain what I wanted and you know he knew what he was doing. He's very good with the straight razor and knows how to do a good fade. Yeah the place is pretty pricey but if you care about your hair it's worth it. Seriously the best barber I have ever been to. I have thick and slightly textured hair as I'm half Indian and every barber I've seen here has done an amazing job with it. All the barbers I've seen have been very personable and will listen to what you want and give you exactly what you ask for. Shop is cool and has a really great familial vibe, they always have water bottles for customers and they have a cute little dog that chills under the seating area most of the time. There are plenty of barbers in this area and I've had less than average experiences with a few cuts I've received from other barbers in Burke that I've been recommended to. I truly cannot say enough good things about this place it is and forever will be my go to. Extremely professional, polite, and personable barbers. As a biracial individual I love the diversity of the staff and the kindness and flexibility they show to their customers. This is the old school barbershop meets hip new school. All the staff are super friendly and cool. I felt like family as soon as I walked in. There is a resident mascot, Sega. I had to wait two months to get into Tommy's chair, but that's no accident. He's tied for the #1 barber by whom I've ever been cut, and that's saying a lot as I've moved all over the place and had to search for a new barber every time. Tommy is super knowledgeable and skilled at his trade. He educated me on everything he was doing to my long ass mop and mullet and formed it into a stylish sleek, shorter version. It's been two weeks and I logged onto their online appt system to try to schedule a follow up and there by some miracle was an opening for 12 noon then next day, so I'm getting a straight razor beard trim. read more

* There is a difference between a shave and a trim.* I wish I didn't have to write this but fair warning needs to be given. We used Yelp to choose this place. We are new in town and my 16 yr old needed a hair cut. I wanted to treat him to something extra special so I booked the appointment. Everything seemed to be good. We got there early and the atmosphere was great. Our apt was at 5:15 but I guess things were backed up and we waited an extra 15 minutes. That's no problem if it means you will take your time and do a fine job. We showed the stylist a photo and to her credit the haircut is ok, not exactly right but close. The reason I'm giving a warning here is he did not ask for his facial hair to be shaved and she shaved it!! Imagine having facial hair and then none. It's a dramatic thing! He had a very thick goatee and mustache. Not peach fuzz. The sides had been shaved but we're growing in. That's how he wears his facial hair - a goatee and stache. That's part of the reason I brought him to a place that specializes in men's hair and beards. So they would treat his facial hair with respect. After the haircut she asked him if he wanted the sides of his face trimmed up. He agreed bc he thought she asked to trim up the sides - not shave his face! She proceeded to shave down his face and over his chin with buzzers so fast and it was done before he could even say stop! She should have clarified with him and made sure she knew what he wanted! I am just shocked! A place like this I would've expected to be very careful and respectful and CLEAR about what the client wants. They reduced the price of the hair cut and were sympathetic but that won't help him tomorrow at school. Forget school - this is just unacceptable anywhere. *update to say I appreciate the response here but I must stand by my review. I can say with perfect assurance that my son would NEVER have agreed to the removal of ALL of his facial hair so there was a SEVERE lack of clarification between barber and client. My hope is that this cautionary review will prevent that from happening to someone else. read more

I have been coming to The Standard for several years now, and I honestly dread the day I ever have to find another barbershop. When I first moved back to the area I tried several "barbers" but never found one that I liked. Even if I liked the cut one time, I would go back and the same barber couldn't seem to replicate their own work. This led to a variety of results. Finally, I read about Tommy in the reviews of another barbershop. They said that he had just recently opened his own shop, and several reviewers mentioned that they had followed him over to his new place. I decided to give The Standard, and Tommy, a try. Tommy, on top of being a truly gifted barber, is a great guy and welcomed me to his shop with a handshake and a smile. I left that day, and every other day I visit the shop, with a perfect cut. It is exactly what I wanted, without me even knowing what I wanted. Tommy is great at what he does, and really cares about his work. That passion shows in every aspect of the shop, as well as, in all the great barbers who have come to work in the shop. Due to Tommy's popularity, it can be hard to get an appointment with him; but don't worry, the other barbers are all up to the task. Frank Ko is one such barber. Frank has been giving me great cuts for at least a year now and I could not recommend him more highly. I mentioned at the beginning that I have been coming to The Standard for several years, I also have not had a haircut anywhere else for all those years. My brother is so picky with his hair. One time we even had to shave his head because he wasn't happy about the haircut. Long story short, we have finally found the right place and the right stylist! I must've been out of my mind when I decided to make an appointment here because I'd never spent more than $20 (including tip) on a haircut before let alone $40 (before tip). But after my first visit, this place really impressed me. My barber's name was Frank Ko, and I would definitely recommend him. You don't see to many reviews with his name but I an assure you he's good. He took his time to make sure it was perfect, wasn't wanna those barbers that takes forever because they like got lost or was trying to fix a mistake. All in all it took around 30-35 minutes. He's also not the type to talk way too much but is definitely on the quieter side, which I prefer because it makes me feel like they're more focus. I believe this place is definitely worth coming back to. The most important thing when spending a lot of money knowing you can get it a lot cheaper somewhere else is the experience. The barbershop itself had great designs and decorations, the barbers looked the part. It's definitely wanna those places you come to right before you have something important coming up and you want to look fresh or you just want to treat yourself. The best/worst part for me is that this place got me excited for my next cut but that also means another $40++ but it is definitely money well spent. 5/5, Multiple visits, 2017. As a man once you find a barber you tend to keep going there. But when I moved I had to find a new one. This took multiple haircuts. I tried the closest shop and wasn't quite happy. I tried the local hair cuttery and that was fine but once I started paying that price I thought what other options are there. I heard about The Standard Barbershop and it was reasonably close so I figured I'd give it a try. Once I decided that I figured I'd go for the full experience and get a haircut along with a beard trim and shave. It took a little while to get an appointment, which is a good sign but an inconvenience. It was also not cheap. Please keep in mind that at one point in my life I regularly had my haircut at a shop we referred to as the hair mechanic (because they used an air compressor rather than a blow drier to clear clippings) for $5 per cut. Just as the cost difference between those two options can't be more stark neither can the experience. This is an old school barbershop. Not in terms of technology or in that 1980's way (i.e. cheap) but in 1920's way. As in the barbers are professionals that do their job as well as possible. This isn't a hack and slash place where they churn people through as fast as possible (hence I recommend an appointment and start looking at least a couple weeks before you need a hair cut). That leads me to a concern I had that is completely allayed now that I've actually been here, the value. I tend to place a heavy emphasis on value since I believe we all have only so much money and we should get the best value for that money. My initially concern was that it would be hard to live up to the cost. But that was completely unfounded. Here are just two reasons. First is the quality of the end result. My barber, Amelia, does a great job. She has a good sense of style that works for me and I always get a ton of positive comments after a cut. Second, to achieve that result requires time. I always opt of for the full haircut, beard trim, and straight razor shave. That process, when done properly, usually averages between an hour and an hour and a half. I'm sure a haircut alone is much faster. So when you consider that an average hack and slash hair cut is probably 20 minutes but costs $20-30 the cost difference starts to make perfect sense. It takes longer to do it right and they charge a completely acceptable premium for that. Overall I can't recommend this shop highly enough. read more

I have never paid $50 for a hair cut before and thought I was crazy for booking an appointment with Curtis who is one of the expert barber there. But having long hair I was in desperate need of a good haircut and in need of someone who has enough experience to tell me what would look good on me. I used to go to those $20 places where I would be disappointed after my cut but with standard Curtis listened to my needs and suggested what would look good on me and I went with it. I was really impressed the way my hair turned out. If you are a guy who has long hair ( or even short ) and needs a proper haircut this is the place. It's always a bit intimidating to find a new barber and to entrust them to cut your hair to your liking. I took the plunge as I was in desperate need of a haircut and boy was I happy to run across the Standard. The staff was friendly and immediately greeted me upon entering, including my barber Lance. While my appointment was delayed for about 10 minutes, I wasn't too bothered as I noticed how meticulous and committed these guys were. Lance sat me down, asked me what kind of style I wanted, and went on to ultimately cut my hair exactly how I wanted. I've frequented several top end barber shops in NYC, Houston, and LA, but I have to say that The Standard is up there with those other establishments, if not better. Price was $30 for a men's cut, which definitely isn't cheap but was well worth the money. This is not your walk in the door and get a haircut type of place. That being said, if you are ok with making an appointment, you will not be disappointed here. I had hoped to walk in for a haircut and was surprised that I would need to make an appointment a week out. It was worth the wait! Walking in and not having to wait for an open barber, and then having a barber actually spend some time on your hair without rushing was a big plus for me. Lance was my barber and he did a great job. The wife liked the haircut which was also a plus. If you can, try the straight blade shave. It is an experience on its own. I had some concerns about my handlebar mustache. I Have gotten haircuts from Tommy for over a year now. He's the most detail-oriented barber I've come across, and is great at making recommendations based on your head shape and size. He's especially good with rockabilly and classic hairstyles. He's also skilled with the straight razor, and will happily bring you back to the gold ol' days with a proper shave and a haircut. Tommy is also great with beards too, and has even helped me when I had my handlebar mustache. The shop is starting off, but I envision a lot of vintage decorations to pop up with time. They have a great selection of pomades and shaving products, and will always make the best recommendations based on your needs! I've been getting cut by Tommy, the owner, for about 3 years now-- prior to when The Standard existed and he was still at the Art of Shaving in Tysons. I've been loyal to him for this long because: - He is literally the only barber that has gone out of his way to help me understand why he cuts my hair the way he does. I'm naturally really inquisitive so this was/is a breath of fresh air to understand why, for example, he cuts one part of my hair slightly unevenly (so that it forms a nice pomp when I put hair product in it), or when he does a reverse fade on my beard (so that it blends with my hair well). - Him cutting my hair is not a guessing game. He asks me what I want and then relays it back to me, and tells me what he's going to do prior to doing anything. He also regularly shows me what he's doing so that nothing is a shock. Open and consistent communication! - He has helped explain to me haircut jargon ("give me a low fade," "square up my hair," etc). This has led to greater confidence with explaining how sexy I want to look to him or other barbers (aka the other equally excellent ones at The Standard, for when I forget to book an appointment with Tommy-- he normally is booked a month in advance because other people like me have been following him around for so long). Not only that, but he spends an insanely long amount of time on you-- 30-45 minutes. Can you get your hair cut at a place where they charge $15-20? Of course you can. The haircut at The Standard is $40 before tip; that can be a bit pricey for some. I believe it's worth every penny, because the barbers here know what they're doing-- throw any hairstyle you want at them and they will deliver, or they'll be honest and explain to you why that hairstyle won't work for your head.
