    Richard Alatorre Pool
    Phil Y.

The Richard Alatorre Pool is a hidden gem. It is located in the El Sereno Recreation Center. The pool is indoors. The pool is a 25 yard swimming pool with 12 lanes. The pool ranges in depth from 3 feet at the shallow end to 12 feet deep by the diving board. The pool is kept to a cool temperature of about 80 degrees. The pool is open for lap swimming Monday - Friday from from 12:30 PM to 8 PM. On Saturday & Sunday, lap swimming is available from 1 PM to 5 PM. It costs $2 to swim here if you have a library card. If you are like me, without a library card, you will have to pay $2.50. Seniors over 65 and children under 17 are free. They have a bag check where the attendant can look after your stuff while you swim. Kick boards, Pull buoys and fins are available if you want extra punishment for your workout. The pool is great for lap swimming. The manager, Ivan Rodriguez, is new to this facility. He told me that he recently decided to lower the temperature of the water to 80 degrees, perfect for lap swimming. The pool is is a fast pool. I was able to swim my laps about a two seconds faster than normal. I came at lunchtime, there were a few other people at the time. I had my own lane without distractions. No fast swimmers here to push you. They do require you to shower first. It is a good policy, but, showering without soap makes you jump in the pool with wet germs, instead of dry germs. The locker room looks like what you would find in jail (not that I would know). There were no lockers. The require you to limit your showers to 5 minutes. They have what appears to be portable benches with a red racks to hang your bag on. If you bring something valuable, you should give it to the bag attendant. The showers are very institutional. You push a button for the water. It takes about 10 seconds for the warm water to come out. The shower head gives a big and fine spray pattern. My shower took longer than normal because the water coming out was too fine and would not rinse off all the soap. Overall, this is a nice pool. Depending on what time you come, you may be able to swim in your own lane. If in the area, I would be back.

    Doing laps and hanging around.

That itself gives this historic structure a miraculous feel because it survived desegregation in an apartheid state that still tries to hide/deny its ugly white supremacism. Nonetheless, the racist, capitalist model of diminishing public infrastructure because they provide benefit to non-whites equally, prevails. The changing rooms are a shambles. Ironically, in many poorer nations where I have used municipal pools, they have smarter, more updated locker rooms. (This reveals the character of what passes for national culture.) Enough now with the disparagement and let's pivot to this historic pool. The length is perhaps Olympic size but the deep end of the pool is in the middle. It's cordoned off into three sections across, allowing a lap swimmer to benefit from the deepest central third, although it is not a full 25 yards across. The water is much clearer than in Glassell Park and perhaps it's because it is not as heavily used? I found there's a solid jet stream of pumped water underneath leading to a kind of "rip tide" effect in the pool. You have to work harder to get across because of the undercurrent. It's quite enjoyable. The lack of trees around this pool makes the sun feel harsh, but the nearby Gold line train gives it a feeling of being part of a vibrant metro region. As well I was smelling street tacos from a nearby truck, very aromatic I was delighted to find this pool during one of the extended brutal heat waves of triple digit temperatures that are commonplace now thanks to climate change. However, consistent with the history of white colonizers being callous about the welfare of non-white citizens, and overriding the unique realities of western geography in favor of conformity with norms from the northeast, the City of LA Parks and Recreation department feels the need to shut down pools like this one during LA's *hottest months* of September and October. In other words, yes, the City of LA would rather people of this area suffer the heat than keep this pool open to allow for some respite for vulnerable human bodies. LA's hottest months are always September and October. City of LA Parks and Recreation: We don't care. Finally, note there is limited parking in a lot which exits into a mega-dip in the street side curb that will crack most sedans' chassis... Call 818-804-7570 about hours.

Anna at Hall Swim Academy is an excellent teacher…read more Two years ago, my son (who was 7 at the time) was going to another swim school and was doing ok but advancing slowly. As part of that school's safety training, they threw him in the water wearing street clothes. He was doing ok for about 30 seconds but then panicked and started to sink so one of the teachers had to jump in and pull him out. (It was partially my fault since I mistakenly had him wear long pants that absorbed water). Anyhow, he freaked out and got very scared. We continued to go to that school for several more weeks but he stagnated with his training and the teacher became frustrated and tried to push him too hard so he had a melt down. Fast forward two years, I started taking him to the Hall Swim Academy west LA location about 2 months ago and he started trying again to learn how to swim with Anna. Anna is extremely kind and patient with kids. She demonstrates what she wants him to do and corrects mistakes in his floating and swim strokes and has him repeat as necessary. She is able to recognize how much to push and when to give him more space and repeats instructions as necessary. He loves going to swim class with Anna and is motivated to learn so he can swim with his friends at summer camp. Yesterday, he had two major breakthroughs. He spent most of the class in the pool without wearing goggles which he previously refused to do. Then, on his own, he decided he wanted to try the swim test. So, he put on street clothes over his swim suit, jumped in the water, floated on his back for 20 seconds and then easily swam to the side of the pool and climbed out on his own. He was so proud of himself for overcoming his fear and is now looking forward to his next class with Anna. I am very grateful to Anna for her kindness, professionalism, excellent teaching skills and being such a good motivator. Thank you!!

However, as we continued, each lesson was with a different instructor, and that lack of consistency made my son increasingly uncomfortable. At his age, familiarity matters, and it became clear he wasn't settling in the way I had hoped. What ultimately led me to write this review, though, was not the instructors--it was the customer service. My interactions with the scheduler/representative regarding scheduling, missed days, and invoices were unpleasant and rigid. There was very little kindness or willingness to work with me, and the communication felt cutthroat rather than supportive. Because of this inflexibility, my son essentially missed out on continued lessons. Instead of working with me as a parent trying to navigate life with two young kids and a disabled husband, I felt pushed out over a missed appointment. In retrospect, I now see how much that experience negatively impacted my son's relationship with the water. I'm writing this while watching my son thrive at Water Wings, where he is happy, confident, and excited to learn. Seeing the difference has made me realize just how behind he became due to how things were handled at Aqua Buddies. Thankfully, there are other options in this city. I truly wish Aqua Buddies placed more emphasis on compassion, flexibility, and customer service--especially when working with young children and families who may need understanding, not rigidity.

First of all, she's extremely knowledgeable on modern swim technique, and can very clearly explain the choices for what she teaches. Jacki does a great job of breaking down any technique in the context of race strategy (Ideal choices for distance vs sprinting, training, etc), and has helped me a ton with body position and recruiting the right muscles for better efficiency as a well as injury prevention. She's very direct in her communication style, and I've learned a ton in just a few sessions with her. I wanted to get some sun and get a swim in. When I showed up, I gave $4 to the cashier and entered the pool area through the bronze metal gate. I went straight to the changing stalls to strip off my street clothes and get into my swimwear. I left my bag with the bag attendant and in exchange, he gave me a pin with a number on it. The lap lanes were pretty empty at 4pm on a Wednesday. There was some sun in my lane but lots of it was shady. I think the pool gets lots is shade even when it's at the peak of the day, which is really good if you don't want to get boiled during your swim. The pool itself was okay. A little cloudy and very shallow at one end of my lane. There was a large timing clock (analog) which I used to time my workout. The thing about this pool that I think is interesting is that it's very no-frills. There are no locker rooms or changing rooms - just stalls for everyone and outdoor showers for everyone. There are also coed bathrooms. If you're the type of person that likes to get naked in the shower and really clean yourself well and then change, maybe this pool isn't for you. It's more for the folk who like to rinse off at the pool and then shower at home. I think that's really important to note. Another note is that they have pool equipment open for use including pull buoys, kickboards, fins and hand paddles. So cool! I'd come here again for a relaxing swim and if I didn't need to be anywhere afterwards. It's pretty cheap and the lifeguards are nice. Parking is plenty. There is a huge lot!!

As this rude lifeguard stands over my hear, I hear a female swimmer complaining that the female clerk was yelling at her to get out because the pool is closed. I saw the lady check watch is was 4:57pm and confirmed that is is 4:57pm . So, I get out at 5:00pm, the deck guard, standing over my lane almost in my way of getting out.
