All I did was ask - not that the employee take responsibility, but that the store takes responsibility. This was received as being ridiculous. While I don't like reading a notice that does not state the truth, our leaving was inevitable. Too many instances of poor management.

Today I had to return a very heavy air conditioner to Amazon and walked in and asked if they could help me get it out of the car. There was zero hesitation and the person I was speaking to ran for the hand truck and lifted the AC out of the back of the car.
