Rush County is named for Benjamin Rush (1746-1813), the physician and signer of the Declaration of…read moreIndependence, and Rushville takes its name from the same source, having been founded as the county seat in 1822 after the county's creation in 1821. The present courthouse, completed in 1896, is a massive Richardsonian Romanesque landmark designed by A. William Rush and Edwin A. Rush (probably not related to Benjamin) of Grand Rapids, Michigan. It's a 3 1/2 story stone structure with four corner towers, steep red roofs, marble interior finishes, stained glass, and a 196-foot clock tower that dominates downtown Rushville. On a Friday afternoon of a holiday weekend, the grounds felt quiet and almost museum-like, making it easy to appreciate the courthouse's castle-like presence. The cannon out front is a great touch, and the historical marker for local attorney Wendell Willkie, the 1940 Republican presidential nominee, adds a surprising bit of national history to the grounds. I was not able to go inside, but I did manage to look through the locked doors to see some of the interior. It looks tremendous and quite beautiful, even from the outside. The first time I passed by the Rush County Courthouse, I thought it was a cathedral. Like most…read moreIndiana courthouses, the building sits on a grand square in the center of the county seat, Rushville. The Courthouse was built in 1896 and is the third courthouse to sit on the square. In the brochure, it's referred to as the "new" courthouse. The building was designed by architects out of Grand Rapids, Michigan, A. W. Rush and Sons. The Richardsonian Romanesque style is different from other courthouses I've seen in Indiana. The courthouse cost $257,385.88 to build. The grounds are simple with a single historical marker that recognizes historic local resident Wendell Willkie. I went through security and asked if there was info about the Courthouse. A friendly deputy was able to give me a 1996 pamphlet that described the courthouse and its history. The interior is beautiful after a complete restoration in recent years. Venetian mosaic floors at the entrance and in the atriums are spectacular. Original staircases with lovely iron scrollwork ascend up to the third floor. Original woodwork and hand painted scrollwork decorate the walls and ceilings. Victorian lettering identifies office areas. On the third floor, a large atrium with a stain glass dome transforms the grand space. A stained glass image of Lady Liberty adorns a wall near the courtroom. The original 1890s spectator chairs remain in the courtroom. Of course, many necessary updates to modernize and improve accessibility have occurred throughout the year. Yet, several ornate fireplaces still grace office corners. The courthouse has received accolades for its beauty from the Indiana Bicentennial Project. The historic sheriff's quarters and jail, which once stood on the southeast corner, were destroy to make room for a modern jail facility. The Courthouse is spectacular and worth a visit. This is a nice memorial that is located at the entrance of Sugar Creek Township Park. It is made…read morepossible by hard work of members of American Legion Post 182. It was dedicated in 2018, after years of planning. Parking here is easy, since it is located in a park with a decent sized private parking lot. The memorial is respectfully and tastefully done. At the entrance to the memorial, you will find a black marble slab with the memorial's sponsors on one side and the logos of the American Legion, above the logos of all 6 branches of service. Below all of that, on the slab's base, you will find the date the memorial was dedicated. Next to that is a sign to remind visitors to be respectful of the memorial. Which is sad that they have to do that, but I understand. Hopefully people will heed the sign. The memorial features bike racks with the logo of each respective branch of service, a walkway with pavers that are dedicated to veterans by family and friends. There is also 3 flag poles, with the center and tallest one flying the American flag, the one to its left flying the Indiana State Flag, and the one to its right flying the POW/MIA Flag. There is a nice pergola that serves as the flags' backdrop and there are two small cannons between the three flags. The memorial is in a circle/semi-circle formation. In the center is a 6 to 7 foot obelisk with inscriptions on the base of it. Words such as "INTEGRITY", "HONOR", "DUTY" and "SERVICE" and inscribed in the cement slab on the ground that leads to the obelisk from each of its 4 sides. On the outside perimeter around the obelisk. You will find black marble slabs with the logo of each respective branch of service inscribed in them. A little further past circle is a circular paved walkway and then some marble benches that were dedicated to veterans by their family and/or friends. Is it the best Veteran Memorial that I seen? No, but i am a sucker for honoring our veterans. It is a small but nice memorial and honors the County's local heroes in a fitting way. It was a team effort and took hard work from many volunteers to make this dream a reality. I understand that you would not travel to see this memorial, but it is worth a visit if you are in the area.

This is a Marine Corp hall open to the public for leasing for events. They also open their Friday…read morenight bingo up to the public. This is a serious bingo night and can be overwhelming to a novice such as yours truly. Still fun once you get the hang of it. It is a nice hall depending on your event.
