The Post Office in Mineola looks old and tired, with a rather depressing appearance that can be quite off-putting. The Postal brick building has an old traditional apperance which fits well in the town. Recently, I have been having issues when it comes to holding mail and forwarding services. The service from government-employed postal workers can also be inconsistent; sometimes good, sometimes not so much. However, the service for ordinary mail packaging was good today. On the other hand, if the mail service were privatized, prices might increase, but the quality of service could improve significantly. For example, I often use UPS stores, which are privately owned, and their service is consistently excellent. However, changing the current system would require an act of Congress. There are substantial legal and political obstacles to privatizing the Postal Service, which makes such a transition complex and challenging.

My Post Office in East Setauket looks like its out of a Norman Rockwell painting, the doors don't make a Star Trek sound but it is backed up to a bird sanctuary. Parking is pretty large but the angle of the spots is a little cumbersome. The lobby does have readers to accept debit/credit cards and they did have 4 counter people during lunch time. After all these years I still think Garden City is trippy. Everything is here but what they don't have are Star Trek doors or a cool post office. As for your Old Country Road, it ain't that country. The postal workers behind the counters are very friendly and get you in and out quickly. There is also an automated/self service machine in the lobby if you want to do it yourself, trust me, wait on line, the machine is a pain! The place opens at 11:00 am and the parking is limited, if you cant find a space pull over to the side and wait, if you leave the parking lot, you can only make a right turn and it will take you forever to get back to the post office Don't even think about making a Left on Stewart Ave, YOU WILL DIE! I confirmed the date and time I would arrive at the post office and received verbal confirmation from a real, live, person that I could do this. I took an Uber to get there because my car was in the auto shop. Upon my arrival, the male employee told me I couldn't get my fingerprints done, despite me having a barcode which indicated they were a USPS location that completes fingerprinting, a printout of my pre-registration, and having called a few days prior to confirm I could do it at this exact day and time. He said the machine "wasn't activated yet," and could not tell me a definitive time it would be fixed by. I asked to speak to the manger, a female employee, who told me that no one would have told me to come this date/time as the machine was broken. I didn't speak to an operator, I spoke to a live female who told me she worked here! Absolutely ridiculous. She refused to do anything to help me, despite me paying for a package a few minutes earlier. She said there was nothing she could do for me and that I'd have to call their supervisor Fran when she was back from vacation. The story changed, of course, and Fran was the only one who could fix the fingerprinting machine... it's not that "it wasn't activated yet." Despite having print outs of my registration, a bar code in my email, and calling beforehand to check, I wasted my time and energy. I will be calling Fran when she gets back from vacation to fix this. Disgusting customer service and attitude from the employees and a lack of willingness to help.
