I went in today there was an older light skin woman who was rude to everyone before me . Saying I have a sign clearly in the window I don't got stamps yall need to read blah. This post office is tiny and always empty! I've gone here about 3 times and to be honest most of the poor workers just look bored. They look like they are just begging for someone to stop on in! It's so nice that I can come here and get in and out! Especially when I'm so used to going to the post office on 13th and being there for forever! Once I waited in line for over an hour just to pick up my mail! So this place is honestly a nice little gem that I found. This post office in downtown Oakland is across the street near Ogawa plaza. The office is a long chute toward the postal workers counter, surrounded by a huge circular series of post office rental boxes. I came here after seeing the huge line at the other post office on the other side of downtown Oakland, in the old, large courthouse building, that moved slower than a snails pace. Here, there were less people and 2 counter staff, so it was a breeze (although no free parking in front). Another time I came it took longer, only because one lady in line had dozens of flat packages to process, each one being weighed, recorded and processed. Either she was sending out investment portfolio prospectuses ( or is the plural propecti?) or 8" by 10" glossy photo prints, resumes, manuscripts and recipes in an old school kind of way to male pen pals around the world, in a precursor to Match.com, Tinder or OK stupid. read more

What's the point of having a listed number when you can't call them? And why remain open if your systems are down and you can't help anyone?

This is the worst post office ever. I came in here today 10 minutes before closing, and a middle-aged clerk gave me stamps to put on my envelopes. She told me that there was no way she was going to put postage on all of those envelopes because they were closing. I told her I had tried my hardest to get them here before closing to no avail. She tried to give me $1 stamps and $0.50 stamps to total $1.50 per envelope even though she had just told me the price for each would be $1.42. I told her that I would be paying an extra $0.08 a stamp and that it was not fair at all. So she was like "I'll take off $0.50." I'm like... no that clearly doesn't add up because I have 40 envelopes and I'll be losing more than that. Then she kept going on about how she can't take the envelopes and how "you can't come in here with all that before closing and expect me to put the labels on them... I'm not doing that." I was so mad that I just walked away from her negativity/attitude and calmly asked the other attendant if she could help me. This other attendant seemed scared of the one helping me and just said "sorry you have to put stamps on them" and even told the person she was helping that she couldn't print labels fk prove her point. The first attendant "helping" me said "yeah I tried telling her that but she's not listening." I asked her if the envelopes would still go out that night if I put stamps on them. She told me that even if I put the stamps on there myself, there was no guarantee they would go out. I thought to myself that it would be my bad if I left the envelopes with her because she'd probably just sit or sleep on them in judging her laziness. Luckily, I saw that another post office in West Oakland was open until 6 pm but unfortunately they didn't want to help me either. These experiences made me lost faith in the post office system because these workers seem to demoralized and unwilling to work. read more

The office itself is usually stocked well and clean. They have some personnel issues, with not so friendly or courtesy customer service. Maybe some additional training is needed or someone needs a different job. Either way, not my issues, this is their usual disposition, so I understand this and conduct my business and leave. Whoever worked here on Friday, August 13th around 3:00pm at the front desk was not willing to help us at all. She was not attentive to customers at all and took 15 minutes each customer. And when I was done packing my things in a large flat rate box she said it was $100?! How is that possible? Every box I showed her she said it was going to be some ridiculous price. FALSE! Congress is the cause. in 2006, they passed legislation mandating that USPS pre-fund future retiree health benefits for 75 years. the funding had to be done within 10 years. Congress also imposed a ban on USPS offering non-postal services: licensing (driving, hunting, ...), shipping wines & beers, banking services (was done during the 1940's). the debt load on USPS maxed out it's debt limit so services had to be continually curtailed to stay under the debt ceiling. Congress has not been receptive to removing it's restriction on USPS.. read more

The service is always very slow here, they usually only ever have one person assisting customers no matter if they have one patron in line or a line out the door. I come here on daily basis to have payment reminder letters certified and shipped and the woman who is usually at the counter always has an irritated look on her face. She isn't very friendly and always lets out sighs as more work gets presented to her, if she doesn't like her job or isn't fit for customer service than she should do everyone a favor and quit. read more

1:00 PM 72° Sunny blue sky This was my go-to Post Office years ago for purchasing stamps; sending letters, cards, bill payments, packages; browsing at the items they had at hand (to the left of the long line of customers) because it was conveniently located right across the street from my job at the Elihu M. Harris State Building. No matter what time of the day, this Post Office had long lines of people waiting to be served. Sometimes I did not mind waiting and other times I would just walk over to 15th & Franklin to the little hidden gem of a post office station, which is no longer there, to handle my business. The postal employees here were always nice and friendly with me. They knew I worked across the street in the State Building. I never got upset with them, always telling them "I know patience is a virtue". Then, "pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body." (Quoted from Proverbs 16:24) I left the Oakland State Building in January 2007 for the San Francisco State Building. I seldom went to the Post Office across the street at the Federal Building on Golden Gate. (Oh, the hassle of going through the security station, taking the elevator to the floor below to purchase my stamps. It was kinda creepy, too.) Thus, there were some Friday afternoons I would take the BART to Downtown Oakland just to stop in at this Post Office and purchase my stamps. Amazingly, the employees do remember me, always ask how I am doing and mention "we haven't seen you for a while". Today, I was at the Golden 1 Credit Union to deposit a check, so I stopped in at this Post Office to send a letter and a bill out. The line was long, but nobody was complaining. The same employees were still there, performing their civic duty by serving the public. The only drawback in coming to this Post Office is parking in this area. It's difficult to find street parking, even if one does not feel like parking in the garage owned by the City of Oakland. BTW, that garage gets full quick. read more

I've had a post office here for over 20 years and ever since Ms. Jackie retired, my mail has been stolen, packages stolen, mail not delivered. The worst part is earlier this year, my box was closed "by accident" and all of my mail was sent back as undeliverable! I don't know what's going on there or who is in charge, but they need to get it together as well as alllll of their nasty attitudes! I'm starting to think that they are all in cahoots with each other and stealing mail for their own personal gain! I have never had this experience ever! I hate it there now! Short of dropping off a letter into the mail slots, going to the Post Office is not something most people look forward to. This location is located on the first floor of Oakland Federal Building. As in many businesses, your wait time will depend when you visit. Expect lines if you go mid-day. I've had no to relatively short waits in the mornings and late afternoons. Avoid this post office. There are always long lines, because only one person is working. The last two times I have been here, I waited over 35 minutes to mail one package. Why do they only have one person working at a downtown location? Still to save stress I'll wait in line and get a receipt next time. *** Make sure you wait in the long line and get a receipt for your package. Do NOT leave it on the counter as the clerks say to because I left my package and it was not scanned and it is now lost! The clerks are in a hurry at the end of the day and just scoop the packages that will then go to 7th st hub. I've checked my tracking and still no scan. I'm going to file a claim. Rarely is there not a line in this post office. At the moment there is a line to the door and ONE clerk available. And believe it or not she just answered her cell phone. There are 3 available "windows" but I've never seen more than two open at a time. At least the open-mouthed, gum chewing clerk is no longer here. When I order packages, they usually go through san Rafael, SF, modesto, you name it, no problem. But EVERY. Single. Time. I agree with other reviews about the friendly workers but here are the negatives: 1) This is the main post office in downtown Oakland proper and it is in the federal building, so why are there no stamp machines? 2) Only 2 service desks open during the busiest time of the day - lunch hour. Awful! 3) After 40 minutes, I finally get up to the clerk at one of the only 2 service desks open... NO STAMPS! What the? The United States Post Office doesn't stock stamps? The friendly clerk agreed with me about my 3 complaints and encouraged me to formally complain, providing me a form for that purpose. read more

This place is horrible. It's not just the long lines and seeming lack of people working to deal with these lines. But the attitudes of the people working here are so bad. There's no need to be rude or to patronize a customer. I'm specifically talking about the younger looking fat black girl with glasses, I don't know her name. But I've had other USPS employees at this location be just as rude and apathetic. The line can build up during lunchtime rush or in the afternoon, but most of the employees actually work quickly so it's never a pain. I use this post office for all my mailing needs to avoid the sloooow Berkeley ones. The only drawback is that they don't have machines that sell stamps, so if you need only 1 stamp, you have to wait in line. read more

My favorite post office. The people behind the counter here are friendly and efficient. It's always very clean, and they actually have pens on the counter for the public to use (althought they are bolted down..smart move). The biggest plus about this location however, is the fact that every time I have dropped off something here to be mailed, it always reaches its destination in a timely and efficient manner. Sorry, all post offices aren't the same. Ever have one of those post offices that either opens late often or seems to delay processing of outgoing mail for a day or so? This isn't one of them. No, they don't have a stamp machine, but the longest i've ever waited in line here was 10 minutes. And majority of the clientele i've seen pass thru this location actually knows how to obtain and fill out the correct forms before they reach the window! They need to record them and have the tape play on a loop in the Berkeley Post Office. read more

I've gone here a couple of times, and the staff have been efficient, and I've never had to wait long. Went to drop off a package that was pre paid. Had to wait in line because they didn't have a drop off box. When I finally reached the window, the lady vaguely pointed for me to drop it off on the table on the side. When I tried to confirm if I'd dropped it off in the right place (a scattered bunch of parcel on top of the counter) she ignored me. I left my parcel there feeling unsure that my parcel was safe especially considering it contained something somewhat important. Anyone could just take it from the counter. Negligence and apathy; not something unexpected from the usps but still, at the very least confirming that the package is safely held by the mailing office is a basic service. read more
