I have always had great service at the Port Jeff PO. It is small with just one terrific lady working so yea, there are times she is in the back doing other tasks. Just ring the bell and she comes right out. Want lousy service, go to the Malverne PO where we used to live. read more

Every single time I am in there, the one, middle-aged blonde worker looks so annoyed to be bothered. You wait a few minutes, she comes out with blank stare, finishes and goes back to office. It often feels like no one is there. It also closes for lunch for over an hour. Avoid if possible. read more

I've been screwed out of mail 5 times in the last 2 years. this past time is the last straw. 2 times A BOX WITH GOLD BULLION I purchased was left on TOP OF THE COMMUNITY MAILBOX!! one time a box of precious metals was delivered to the wrong Mailbox and several checks have gone missing as well. most recently THE ONLY PIECE OF MAIL that was missing from a delivery was a COMPANY CHECK that I was in need of. So this post office has some of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had in a USPS. Again these things fluctuate and maybe they'll improve their customer service in time, so if you absolutely need the bare minimum service, then yes this post office will do just fine. My experience unfortunately was one where even this bare minimum was not met, hence the one star. Here's what happened. So I walk into the post office, and the one postal worker there was having a casual conversation with a person who appeared to have been a customer who was not actually doing any post office transactions. They were literally just chatting while I stood there for a full minute or two. Finally the postal worker invited me to the counter. I explained to this person that I purchased a money order from the US post office 2 months ago and already wrote the payee's name and address on it, but I did not need to use that money order anymore, so I'd like to have the money order reissued, which I know for a fact the post office can do as I have done that before. You just need to provide proof of ID and (sometimes) the receipt, both of which I had ready. This postal worker then proceeded to tell me that she had no money in her register and could not cash a money order that size (i.e. it was for a monthly rental payment, so sizable but not enormously so). I explained to this person that I don't need to cash it, I want a new money order in exchange for the one I already wrote on. Her response was that she can't do anything to help me and my best bet would be to try the other post office nearby to see if they can cash the money order (!?). At that point I realized that this person clearly doesn't know what they are talking about, and worse, is clearly not listening to what I am actually requesting. Now mind you I'm not some disheveled looking, oddly behaving, "suspicious" appearing person that might engender this kind of "let me just shoo him away" attitude that this postal worker had. But that's exactly how I'd describe her demeanor towards me. After 5 minutes of repeating my simple request to this person, I decided this is just not worth my time and went to another post office (in Setauket), where my request was promptly processed with zero issues. So my advice is if you happen to be in this post office and feel like you are getting nowhere, are not being helped, or that the postal worker is not actually listening to what you are saying (she seemed more interested in the chatty male customer that she was previously interacting with than actually providing good customer service), then just don't bother and go elsewhere for better service, unless you are absolutely desperate for help in that moment and don't have the option of going elsewhere. read more

Sounds like Lucy must be a relative or a close friend of the postal clerk. "One of the best USPS locations" Give me a break! My experiences have been similar to those of Tara. Over the past several years , I have come into this post office with no one behind the desk at least a half dozen times, and after waiting as long as five to ten minutes have had to shout out for the woman to stroll out from the back room. This service is disgraceful. I try to avoid this post office as much as possible now. I have never had this experience in any other post office. read more

Worst post office I've ever been to, hands down!!! I come here occasionally when I'm in the village to drop off a few things. I usually come in the middle of the day only to be unpleasantly surprised that they are closed smack in the middle of the day for a lunch hour. How are they allowed to do that?? I don't know ANY other post office that does that. The parking is an absolute joke and a half. They share a back building parking lot with about 3 other private businesses so your lucky if you can find a spot. As for the service...LOL. Every single time I'm in there I have to stand at the counter and shout "HELLO!" And then finally I hear someone in the distance walking up to the counter. They never give me a receipt unless I ask for it. On top of all of this I had an incident that happened last month when I shipped something out. I sent a small item wrapped up in an envelope and the item inside got stolen somewhere along the way. I opened a case but no one could do anything to help me. When I went back to the post office to question them I was given such an attitude for even gently inquiring!! If I were you I would just avoid this USPS unless your just using the drop off post box. read more

I have no idea what tara expects but because I've used this location many times over the years I disagree. I never had any problems here. As a matter of fact It's one of the best USPS locations I've ever visited. Granted It is small for a post office but that's actually a good thing, you get personal and professional service from their postal clerk. It's located in the town of Port Jefferson surrounded by restaurants so around lunch time parking may be difficult. Perhaps tara should hire a limousine service to double park for her as she mails her envelope. Their hours of operation are posted on the front door so why is tara surprised when she finds them closed? I would give this location 10 stars if I could, and tara, please use another USPS location, you give the town of Port Jefferson a bad name. read more
