We toured and climbed the lighthouse with tour guide Lawson who was simply terrific--knowledgable, engaging and dressed in full lighthouse keeper uniform. He also demonstrated the fog signal whistle, and we learned a lot about that. The museum was the best lighthouse museum we've ever toured. But the real surprising thing was the Straits of Mackinac Shipwreck Museum on the property. With top-notch audiovisual displays and actual remnants, I learned a lot and was very interested (and I didn't really want to tour it originally--I am so glad I changed my mind.) This is in a wonderful location right by the Mackinac Bridge, very picturesque. I encourage you to stop in, take the tour, climb the lighthouse if you're able, and tour the museum and shipwreck museum--you will not be disappointed!

There is a schedule in the visitors center that shows what came through, as well as what's coming up...ex: ship____at 2pm. It's definitely worth a stop and look.

It took us about 50 minutes with our camper to get to the lighthouse. If we had known that, we wouldn't have come on a day when we had the camper. It's a free to climb tower and a gift shop that says they're open 10-6 but again DO NOT GO HERE IF YOURE NOT READY FOR THE ROAD IN!! I'm not joking here, if you are in a smaller car or in an RV and you encounter one of the sandy patches- you're not getting out without a tow truck. In a larger vehicle, you may not turn around to leave once you get to the end. Go with a full tank of gas and prayers for your undercarriage.

It's less than a half mile long, but it's packed with some very cool sights. It was very calm and picturesque as we strolled along the shore with views of Mackinac Island, the ferry boats, picnic tables, a few historical monuments, and a sundial where your shadow tells the time of day. The highlight was the impressive Chief Wawatam Lighthouse, accessed by walking down a pier from the main boardwalk. Plenty of great photo ops are everywhere.

This was our second visit…read more Our first was during peak season and it was PACKED, hot & thick with mosquitoes. There were a lot of unhappy children that weren't shy about vocalizing their displeasure. This time, it was cool out with light rain, empty of people & not a mosquito in site. The lower falls may make you question why you're here. The upper falls should help you remember. We trekked all over & enjoyed it. (After hours on a bike, the body was itching to be in motion.) The walkways are user friendly & I'd call it more of a stroll than a hike. No scrambles here. I'm not sure you could pay me to come back when it's busy but I would certainly come back around the end of September/beginning of October. The colors were just starting, too. So, if you're looking for that, it should be ready around the 1st week of October (?)
