The post office sucks as an institution, full stop. There are never enough people at the windows (here, out of five, there was a single open). The people who are at the window usually are not at all friendly and instead make you feel like your existence an imposition to them, ostensibly because they work a job it's impossible to be fired from. Today I came in with two items to mail, one of which I unfortunately had to post from an actual post office since it was a padded envelope. I'm not sure if the post office is a Performance Based Organization (PBO), but at the very least it's an agency that is subject to performance goals so you would think there'd show a greater sense of urgency. But then the current postmaster general seems to have a particular desire to run the agency into the ground, and the USPS seems happy to drive people to its more expensive competitors for service (I have more than once used USPS or FedEx as an alternative to having to deal with the post office). I don't know what the woman at the window was thinking. She totally ignored the card I was sending. I brought it to the PO because it said extra postage required and also I had used a wax seal which I thought could potentially affect the weight. She said they don't print 58 cent stamps (which I guess is the current cost of them--I usually buy forever stamps so I don't know for certain what the current cost is), but I told her WHY I had given her the card and she continued to argue. I guess they don't sell single stamps any longer, either? At the post office? Wild. Anyway, she weighed it and it took a single stamp so I used one of the forever stamps I happened to buy. There are signs throughout the post office advertising all the stamps they have. They had at least 7-10 different selections for Forever stamps. But when I got to the front desk and asked to purchase them, she showed me four types that she had--none of them that were on the signs throughout the office, of course. And since I bought two sets of holiday stamps on November 15, 2021 that have to this day never arrived, I'm not about to purchase stamps online. I spent over 20 minutes in line with five people ahead of me (it was six when I arrived, but one guy left). Just a miserable experience. There are two unique, interesting features at this post office. First, the post office is dedicated to the musician Steve Goodman, a Chicago native, whose legacy has seen a resurgence in interest as he is largely known for the song Go Cubs Go, which is played at every home game the Cubs win. (As a Cubbie fan, this is one of my favorite traditions.) The Lakeview post office also has a very large mural over the customer windows. The mural, titled "Chicago: Epoch of a Great City", was commissioned in 1937 and painted by Harry Sternberg. If you thought, as I did, that it was a WPA mural, you would be incorrect! It's from the same era and with a similar purpose of providing work for people during the Depression. However, this was part of the work of the United States Treasury Section of Painting and Sculpture (later known as the Section of Fine Arts), which was charged with providing murals and other artwork for new federal buildings to decorate these new buildings with the best American art available. Artists were selected by competition, national and regional, to have their works displayed. Many--perhaps most--of these works were placed in post offices, as those were places that most people would often visit. The work depicts several important eras, moments, and landmarks in Chicago's history. You'll see Fort Dearborn, an early settlement from almost 40 years before the city's incorporation; work in the mills and stockyards; the Great Fire demolishing the city, and the risen city's skyline circa 1937. Several of the buildings in the "modern" skyline exist today--you'll see the Wrigley Building, Civic Opera House, Field Museum, Conrad Hilton, and a few other buildings that do indeed dot the skyline today, in 2022. The influence of Upton Sinclair and Carl Sandburg are strongly evident. And (perhaps a bit mischievously), you'll find Sternberg included a self-portrait in the mural, the very first figure on the left side, flipping an electrical switch. I've been fascinated by similar murals I've seen in other post offices (the Broadway post office has a similar mural), and I have to say learning about the Section whilst writing this review has only served to further pique my interest. I've lived about a mile from this post office for over 10 years and never been inside, but this is the one reason I'm glad I did today. If, like me, you're interested in history and murals in particular, seeing this is the main reason I'd visit this post office.

Her response is "go somewhere else, theres a store on sheffield but theyre closed today". So I asked where I could buy some stamps, to which she replied "not my problem. Next!" I left after a couple minutes, and did not see the woman working the counter meaningfully contribute to society while I was there. I appreciate that usps allows people like this to remain employed somewhere, but as other reviews show, this is a consistent issue that has been present for years and will likely not be addressed. I've seen far worse post offices than this. Everyone complaining of employees giving an attitude…read moreperhaps need to understand these clerks aren't the complaints department for whatever you have going on. Ask to speak with a supervisor if you have delivery issues etc. It would be much better if some of the customers wouldn't stand in line trying to mail out a single first class envelope and waiting to buy a stamp just for that one envelope. Buy a book of stamps and you will save everyone else's time including your own. It would be much better if this post office had a caller window for people picking up packages open during a certain time of day like 10am or something then it would be easier to pick up packages like it was many years ago. But look at all other retail industries where everything is being automated or self serve so it doesn't surprise me that there is only one window or 2 at most open to help you. Sometimes putting yourself in the shoes of the clerk is all it takes and try seeing it from their perspective. It's not easy to have a postal job. Postal work isn't like a simple 9 to 5 job specially the ones going on route. The biggest problem is there is no parking lot for the customers and its either paying the over priced street metered parking or risking getting a ticket and when the lines are long, like waiting for 15 to 20 minutes in line for people to get their passports done specially if you know how to fill everything out then maybe do it yourselves instead of wa ting everyone doing it for you. Then that takes away time and sometimes its not worth paying overpriced meter parking or risking a ticket for waiting in long line to pick up package specially some rude customers with their kids screaming and jumping around like its a playground. The you all expect the clerks to be all smiling when you wouldn't be smiling either if you had to work in this kind of environment.

But the workers had such an attitude. One of them who wander around told me to go to the next open window but when I got there then the worker gave me attitude while saying I didn't call you up. Then the wandering worker said well she can wait while you get set up. The way they didn't even seem to like each other and have to work together was not making it seem like a safe space. Luckily, this isn't my common post office that I would go to and I'm so thankful for that because the set up is so weird too like you can't even see the employee in the window to know. It's also incredibly dirty inside and there was a homeless person or something asking for money right when you walk in. Didn't feel safe, didn't feel any great customer service, extremely long wait. Never again.

We're the little section of Ravenswood that's Uptown due to a location just east of the UPN Metra. Uptown has its challenges, but like many places in Chicago there's more than meets the eye. Edgewater, which is the newest of Chicago's 77 community areas, was created out of Uptown in 1980 so was once much larger. Uptown was once even more an entertainment hub than it is today. Perhaps one of the coolest bits of history related to Uptown is that it was the home of Essanay Studios, which was owned by Charlie Chaplin during his brief stint in Chicago in the early 20th century. Today there's the Aragon and Riviera as the major entertainment attractions, with the Green Mill down the block from both. The Uptown Theatre, a Balaban and Katz masterpiece, has been sitting quietly for decades until it can finally undergo repair (I truly hope this happens). Uptown Art Week is also a nice celebration of the neighborhood and it's great fun to walk along Broadway to watch folks working en plein air. There's also the Clifton Avenue Street Art Gallery with some interesting and beautiful works celebrating the area, or whatever the artist was moved to create. Downstate Donuts is in Uptown along Wilson and you need to stop here. If you've heard of them, you'll know that they are the place that makes donuts out of potatoes. I'm not exactly sure how it works but whatever it is, it's deeeeeelicious. They're super creative with their flavors; I have to say that the miso honey butter is my favorite flavor. Terrace (once called Hearthstone & Terrace) is a cool shop a few blocks west on Wilson. They specialize in home furnishings and also have a large collection of plants (houseplants and otherwise). The owners are cool as are the other employees. I've bought some lovely plants here and some great photo frames. Uptown is pretty cool and I thought that even before I realized we actually live within the boundaries of the neighborhood. You'll find something to do or somewhere to shop if you visit.
