The Oval has so many fun activities! We first visited two years ago for the Olympic speed-skating trials (highly recommended!) and recently did a 2-hour Learn to Curl class with out-of-state family. Half of my family was not allowed to participate d/t having open toed shoes (Chacos and some athletic slides). This is NOT a rule that actually exists on their website or anywhere posted or even in the email confirmation. The employee simply over reached and made the experience terrible. Imagine sitting watching 2 hours of your family having a blast while you're forced to watch. Or feeling guilty that you get to have fun while siblings are sidelined watching. No refund offered (in fact, one of the first things out of the employee's mouth was "sorry, no refunds" like they enjoyed the moment watching the smile fade from my kid's faces). No working with us. So hopefully someone reads this before going, and saves themselves the headache and the money. Directly from the FAQ of their website... Update: While the oval is a fun place to do many activities, the hockey program has plummeted and absolutely ruined our overall experience. We paid more this year, started weeks after other programs, get less ice time (no more Sunday stick & puck), and don't have as many games (especially against non-oval teams) as last year. We recommended friends to the program, and they were completely ignored by Jae Worthen who runs the program. After denying one of their sons a legitimate spot on the team because "it wouldn't be fair to the other boys," Jae & team instead prematurely moved up several boys from the learn-to-play program who were 1/10th the skill level, weren't ready for team/game play, yet got legitimate spots on the team. I also asked Jae about 6 yr olds being allowed in the U-8 program, and after he swore there weren't any, there were in fact many. That's just one of many lies told by Jae regarding the hockey program and USA hockey regulations, and he gets quite upset when he's called out on that. Jae's actions show that he does not care about the future of hockey, and it's really sad to see the talented players leaving to Park City & Junior Grizz. We and the parents of the other 4-5 best players this year will not be returning next year either. But hey, I guess that's more ice time for the men's leagues Jae likes to play in. read more

I'm a big fan of this place. Skating never feels boring because it's a huge place and might take a while before you finish a round! The facility is clean and bright, plenty of parking spots. You can sometimes see icehockey players having their games or speed skating class going on - kinda awesome how they move. Also, their open hour for public skating is so generous (more than half a day) so you are more flexible on how you plan your visit. One thing that you should notice is that they have events pretty often, so please check their schedule before making any plans. read more

Not an easy venue to get around in a wheelchair. My friend had surgery and to get around you have to wait for staff to control the elevators. Our curling instructor happened to be really serious, and we were there for a fun night out as a group, but we still had fun. Would recommend. read more

The Utah Olympic Oval is used for local schools and University athletics (track, speed skating, hockey) as well as Olympic training. They also rent out parts of the place for corporate events. So many fun things to do at the Oval and tons of parking! I love ice skating here frequently for only $6 a person, $4 with military ID. Skate rentals are only $5 and YES they are open during COVID-19. Not the place to be if you do not want to be around many people but masks are worn and it is a giant rink. Public skate sessions are usually 2 hours long and you can easily find the schedule for the month on their website. People tend to only stay about an hour or a few minutes over an hour, so come later in the session if you do not want to be exposed to large groups. Many regulars will even give you skating tips if you ask! read more

Visiting from the Bay Area, we had to take the opportunity to visit this olympic venue! My friend and I were looking for some really cool Winter Games activities to do while in SLC, and while looking at the Oval website we stumbled on the utah winter games website (http://utahwintergames.org/). Somewhere on the website it stipulates that it is for locals only, but I emailed Tim Preston (the organizer) if us out of towners could join, and he obliged. I think if you just sign up through their registration, you can do it and you shouldn't have a problem. My friend and I participated in the Super Clinic. This clinic lasts 4 hours where you get to participate in 4 different winter sports. Clinic takes place from 11am - 3pm. And the best part is that it only costs $10 per person! Cost includes ice time, instruction, and equipment. 11am - Curling - This is A LOT of fun. I admit that this is very hard to watch on TV (for me personally) but it is a lot of fun to play it. I think we had about 45 minutes of instruction and drills, learning the rules and such. And then we got to play a couple of matches. Instruction was really good, the guys there were really patient with everyone. 12 noon - Ice Hockey - I've always wanted to try ice hockey since I was a kid, so I really enjoyed this session. I made a couple of "Mighty Ducks" jokes when we got our hands on the equipment. The instructor for this one was a bit younger (like still in high school) and didn't really command the attention of the group. He had a tough job though since it was such a large group that varied in age from 7-30. It was fun, we did a bunch of drills and played a game called sharks and minnows. 1pm - Figure Skating - Can't comment since I didn't participate in this session. I kind of don't understand how they expect you to do all 4 sessions without stopping to eat for lunch. So I took this opportunity to take a break and have a snack. 2pm - Speed Skating - I was really looking forward to this one since I'm a fan of watching short track at the olympics. You actually get to use speed skates for this session (included) which was cool since I've never strapped on a pair of these. Do not be fooled, Speed Skating is a lot different than skating with hockey or figure skates. The blades are shaped differently and the position you take is completely different than hockey skating. I thought I would be able to get my fingers down on the ice like Ohno does, but I was not even close. You have to get really low the entire time and this is not an easy sport. And now its 3pm, time to go home! Overall, this is a pretty cool facility. It's located in a really random place. After talking to one of the coaches, it sounded like the land was donated to the city for the olympics, so that's why it is in such an obscure place. Really makes me wonder how they fit all those people in there for a world class event, because the neighborhood is far from it (sorry if you live there). I think that the clinic is targeted for kids, but there were some adults there. I think about 30% of our group were adults. My friend and I thought it was funny that we were the only adults for a while. But the short track that you skate on is the same ice that Apollo trains on, which is pretty cool. They say its the fastest ice in the world because of him. They also have the long track that circles around the short track and hockey rink. They had a free skate after our clinic was over so I got to use my speed skates on that track. That thing takes forever to get around! it is huge. You also get to see some aspiring olympic athletes training there on the spin bikes, and on the track. Pretty cool spot if you're into that olympic stuff. The clinic serves its purpose and just exposes you to each of the sports. Don't expect to have too much free time to mess around and practice your new techniques. It was really fun here and I think it was definitely the highlight of our trip! I would recommend it to anyone going to SLC. read more

The other night for a family holiday party we went ice skating at the Utah Olympic Oval. It was my first time visiting the Oval and I was impressed. The building itself is pretty awesome and definitely Olympic in size. The building contains an Olympic sized speed skating track as well as an ice hockey rink and small figure skating rink. For casual ice skating the Utah Olympic Oval is fine but there are some disadvantages. First of all, the ice was pretty chopped up when we first got there and they don't bring out the Zamboni very often. When they finally resurfaced the ice the skating was much better, but resurfacing probably took a good 20 minutes because the track is so large. Speaking of size, because the track was built for Olympic speed skating, it is 400 meters or over 1300 feet. So it's a LONG way around! Also, because there is a hockey and figure skating rink on the interior, you can't skate through the middle, meaning when you start skating you're only choice is to keep going. But there is some advantage to this because it prevents people from cutting through the middle and potentially running into other skaters. Overall I had fun at the Utah Olympic Oval. I'd go skating here again and recommend it to friends if asked. We went skating on a Thursday night and it was not at all crowded, which was another bonus. Another time I would love to try the curling lessons or take part in some of the other activities they offer here. read more

This place is great. I speed skate there every day and The facility is great. It is a better temperature than most ice rinks so you don't get cold when you are in it. The ice is incredible. There is a running track around the rink and people are always running on it. read more

Worst hockey program in the state. The people, Tamara and Josh, running the program are awful. Tamara acts awful to kids even at a charity tournament. Josh yells at teenagers to make himself feel better about peaking early in life. The coaches only care about playing their kids. No one cares about developing any players other than kids they think can help the coaches kids. If you are a parent paying for the hockey season, your role is to pay for ice time for the coaches kids. This is the only reason you are there. read more

Bummer they were so stringent on masks, but overall the facility and people were nice and the shaded parking area was a bonus while it was so warm. Do you have a child who is passionate about hockey or wanting to learn to play hockey? After 3 years playing at the Oval, I highly recommend you find any other place to have your child play. After massive coaching changes over the past year this program has become a disaster. The program director, Jae Worthen, could care less about your child. In fact, he compares his coaches to drug dealers and instructs them to sell the kids the "crack". When confronted about this not only was he angry, he blatantly lied about it. When convenient, he'll abide by USA Hockey governances. When it isn't, he'll make up excuses and false regulations. You'll be lucky to get any sort of reply from him or his assistant via email or phone call, unless it involves money. Good luck getting your child a jersey should they need one. He'll claim they're out. A quick look in the equipment room proves otherwise. Currently there are 2 teenage boys with zero qualifications teaching the learn to play program after Jae fired the coach who was qualified because she refused to move players onto teams who weren't ready and hadn't passed each level. There are now kids on teams who are a danger to themselves and other players are they are not ready nor skilled enough to be on teams. This year, instead of playing other teams, the Oval teams are playing themselves because Jae is angry at teams like the Junior Grizz (who have contacted him to set up tournaments a total of 3 times at the date this was written, all contact has been ignored to date) and can't get past his own ego to do what is best for the youth teams. When you disagree with Jae, question him, or offer a suggestion, he becomes angry, loud and belittles you with comments like "you aren't educated on this" or abruptly ends the conversation saying this isn't up for discussion. Contrary to what Jae tells you about his desire to grow youth hockey, Jae would rather give his washed up men's league ice time instead. Games, practices and stick & puck sessions have all been canceled or rearranged this year to accommodate his men's league games. After another confrontation tonight, where Jae didn't like being questioned, he threatened to have a parent ejected from the arena. When the parent stood their ground, Jae would not stop cornering the parent in an attempt to continue engaging in unwanted conversation. The parent continually told him to leave her alone and would physically move away from him. Jae is a liar and a disease to hockey. Make the drive to any other facility to have your child play hockey there until this man is removed from his position. read more

This place is great! For my wife's birthday, I bought her speedskating lessons at the Olympic Oval. For four one-hour lessons it costs $45. But the coolest thing is that the classes are taught by Derek Parra, who has won 9 Olympic medals. He is a genuine guy, and super nice. He had our names memorized (our group has 12 people in it) within the first 15 minutes of our first class. They also teach other classes at the Oval. You can even take curling lessons if you really, truly want to be like the Canadians. read more

I went here with my husband and six year old sun to ice skate with a church group. It wasn't expensive to rent a pair of skates and go out on the ice for as long as we wanted. There were a lot of people there but the oval is so large that it wasn't like a crowded mess of people or anything. They had a snack bar with over priced food and drinks if you get hungry. What I appreciated was the scooter/walker thing they have for young children to use that can't skate yet. My son used one for most of our time there until he felt confident enough to try skating without it. We all had a great time and will be back! read more

This place is so awesome. Its giant. Well maintained. Clean. And has awesome activities. 6 of us went cosmic curling. Yeah, its a real thing! It wasnt very cosmic though. But it was a great learning experience. We showed up without reservations (yeah, cosmic curling sells out) and somehow greased the wheels to get on the ice. The coach was awesome and super helpful. She instructed us on how to play and gave good tips. She even shared interesting curling facts with us. This was an awesome way to spend time learning about this goofy olympic sport that the Canadians love. Highly recommend the facility for an ice activity. read more

When Salt Lake City hosted the Winter Olympics in 2002, people from all over the world came to watch world-class athletes soar above the half-pipe performing super-human tricks, triple-salchow with courage and grace, and sprint across the ice on speedskates with a speed most of us only dream of. Today, world-class athletes from all over the world can still be found at the Utah Olympic Oval--not only during World Cup long and short track speedskating events, but training during the season as well. The Oval is also a place to find children who dream of being Olympic athletes themselves, and who take learn-to-speekskate lessons. Learn to speedskate is taught by former Olympic speedskater Derek Parra. I can't imagine a better coach. In a world filled to the brim with competitive sports and over-competitive parents, Derek sets such a different tone. He emphasizes that the kids have fun, and that first and foremost, they enjoy the sport. What a novel concept! He still pushes them to do their best, and to get better each session, but the atmosphere in which they learn is fun, and that's how it should be for kids learning a new sport. My daughter has taken speedskating from Derek for over a year. During this time, she has learned confidence, her endurance has improved, and she looks forward to skating every week. I wish the introduction to a new sport could be this enjoyable for every kid. read more

I like my ice rink like I like my men - ceap and fun. ;) This gigantic fun-zone is...well....fun! Public ice skating is always a blast, and I see the Utah Flying Trapeze group going at it every time I'm there. They have a running track that goes along the perimeter of the ice rink, and they have interior rinks INSIDE the giant oval rink for hockey games. Also...they have a friggen' pole vault area. I feel like an Olympic athlete every time I come here! read more

There are not too many places where a middle schooler can rent speed skates and fulfill a dream but this place is one of them. For a nominal fee, your child can skate here. Often, there is a hockey game going on in the middle--there's an NHL rink there--it's that big--or practice in the adjacent Olympic rink. But it's the speed skating opportunity that really makes this place special. Wow. Beautifully well-lit, a snack bar, music, it's all here waiting to be experienced. If your kid skates or plays hockey, this is a great way to spend the evening. Highly recommended; we will be back. read more

The Olympic Oval is amazingly impressive!! It's massive and open. I luv it there. I attended a curling class! AMAZINGLY FUN! I'm super hooked on curling now. All the staff at the Oval were incredibly friendly and really worked with me when we had a no show in our curling group. The curling class was well taught and explained all the important aspect, as well as ice safety and ice preparation. I got to use Rocks that Olympians used- awesome. I really want to join a curling league now, so thanks Olympic Oval. read more
