Primary care from the Clifton Park CBOC (Community Based Outpatient Clinic) which falls under the Albany Stratton VA Hospital, is also a much needed and appreciated resource. I've been going to the Stratton VA for 25 years now and I see doctors in 5 different clinics, I've also used the ED there and let me tell you going there is a pleasure. Most of the doctors I see are permanent while a few of them are brought over from AMC. You know they go that extra mile to make sure you're taken care of. I know you read a lot about VA hospitals but not here. This place makes you feel at home. The doctors, nurses, and complete staff are friendly. Both my father and I have been treated by the VA Medical Center in Albany . My father was always treated respectfully and with care kindness and patience . I have only had one experience at the VA in over 8 years in which I felt I was not treated with respect at the best care they could provide . In that situation the problem was the doctor was just an arrogant cardiologist, but those things happen . Whenever I email a question it is responded to within 24 hours and the time I needed to call for a nurse late night I was taking care of immediately . Unfortunately, a year ago I was bit by a rat and not only did they make sure that I was okay they called the CDC to ensure their treatment was correct . I think most people don't understand that the VA is understaffed and if you speak to some of the people that work there you can see their kindness and efforts are not always appreciated . I also know that I could not afford the quality of medical care that I get there nor could I forward the support equipment that they provide as well as the supplies for that support equipment without charge . For me, they are a blessing and I am glad that they are there . read more

My husband is a veteran, and he is being treated in Albany,NY,Last Monday, December 17, 2024, he had an intervention from Albany Med and then he was transferred back to Albany Veterans Hospital, when I go back to the Veterans Hospital to the first floor at information area is employed with an unprofessional attitude and with a not very friendly attitude and I was trying to explain to her that I wanted to know what room my husband was in, that he had received an intern surgery ect ect and then this lady asks me in Spanish, do you speak Spanish? and I said yes and she told me because your English is horrible, and I don't understand you,I let her finish and she was trying to speak Spanish and her Spanish was just as bad or worse, (my mother tongue is Spanish, but I defend myself in English, It's not perfect but I dare to talk about it) my point is that a "professional" person should not speak like that to a person or patient who visits a hospital, I already know her last name and I told her that I am going to report her. for not being a professional and trying to belittle or want to humiliate me because of my English and to top it all off she is Hispanic, her last name is Santana, I had never had the bad taste of meeting an employee as despicable as her. read more

the employees, with the exception of a handful, don't like or care about us, the veterans. our care is just a paycheck for them. the administration will cut you off and block you from any avenue of speaking out if you say something negative about this hospital. and an emplo who is supposed to advocate for veterans said that if they drop the mask mandate, they are afraid they would never again be able to enforce it. read more

For the medical care it's ok but as an employee really bad especially the housekeeping department. Literally run by people with no knowledge of housekeeping or just bad leadership. Really scary to be honest because it's run by mostly vets. I am a Vet myself and I'm considering leaving this hell hole the pay at a fast food establishment is better 15.25 to start. It takes months to get the job and you will be doing custodial duties plus more. Really not worth the risk of bringing some infectious disease home to your loved ones. read more

This place has really improved over the recent years. I used to be afraid to come here from the horror stories my dad (a disabled VietNam vet) used to tell me as well as from many other anecdotal stories. I'm a disabled Iraqi Freedom vet now and have been coming here for testing and treatments of my various injuries and conditions. My primary care is at a VA clinic in Glens Falls but I have to come here for any specialists i need to see. The Hemotology / Oncology department is excellent. Super friendly and I've never had to wait more than 5mins in the waiting room. Both the nurse and doctor have always been very pleasant and caring. The pulmonary department is a mixed bag. The nurse and techs that do the function checks are very nice and good to deal with but I was not at all impressed by the doctor I saw. He seemed very knowledgeable but his customer service or bedside manner was terrible. Downright rude actually. No waiting for any of my visits there either. The blood draw (phlebotmy dept) folks are excellent! I've given gallons of blood in hundreds of samples and they have never hurt me and were actually very pleasant and jovial as well as quick. Couldn't ask for more with those folks! The ortho dept was professional and decent to deal with. No complaints there. The VA Comp and Pen folks were okay. They are usually very busy up there so it's the most waiting I've ever done in this place but even that wasn't too bad. They're pretty efficient and friendly. The pharmacy...in my experience it's been hit and miss. Some days I've walked in, got my number and was called up right away, no muss no fuss. Other days, it seemed like I spent half the day here waiting and waiting. Some of the workers here are very friendly and some just don't appear to be enjoying their job. The travel pay dept is usually very quick and efficient but absolutely no shred of personality or friendliness here.....all business and no smile. Whatever. The cashier down the hall from here that actually gives out the money is friendly and pleasant to deal with. Of course her job is made easier by the happy customers she encounters.....even if the rest of your day is crappy, someone giving you cash usually brings a smile to your face. The Emergency Room....I've only had to come here once thankfully but it left me with a positive impression. The staff here is very friendly and efficient. I felt like I was in good hands and treated very well. I've been to the ER's of many many other hospitals over the years and I've rarely encountered better than I had here. So overall I have a very favorable impression of the VA hospital in Albany. read more

If you're thinking of taking your loved one here, don't. Apparently a symptom is a diagnosis at this hospital. While I was there I called for an update and was hung up on the first time, then put on hold for almost 30 minutes before finally talking to a very rude nurse named Barbara. I had questions for her about some treatments and what the discharge paperwork meant and she said "I don't have time to come talk to you, I have other patients". Apparently certain people are more important than others. You should ask your fish for medical advice before going to this hospital. At least the receptionist Shirley was fabulous and made this experience tolerable. I wish more people here could be like Shirley! read more

Called for an appointment and was asked the purpose of the appointment,I explained what I would like to have checked,a acorn size lump on my neck.i was told to arrive an hour and a half early for lab work.i arrived at 11:50 am for a 1:30 appt.blood work and urine sample done within 15 min.then I was told ,you're way early,you may want to go to lunch and come back at 1:30.so I hung out in the parking lot till 1:15 and went back in to wait my turn.about 1:30 a nurse came out and took me to a room and took my blood pressure and weighed me,then back to wait.10 mins later a doctor took me into a room and began a series of questions about everything except what I was there for,2 hrs later I had to ask what was the line of questioning about,what about the lump. Deer in the headlight look,oh is that why you're here,nobody told me that,he said.out the door he went and came back with another doctor who said we'll have to send you to another doctor outside va hospital.now we're 4 hrs into my visit,I was annoyed at this point. Doctor took my blood pressure again and now he says it elevated a little,gee I wonder why.another appt was made for 5 weeks down the road at va 3:30 pm.what are we going to do at 3:30pm for the lump? Oh no this is to ck blood pressure an blood sugar level,well i limped through the rest of the session and left ticked off.i was given an appointment card with date and time of next useless appt. Next day I canceled the appt.today I got 2 phone calls from va one was for an appt for nose,ear and throat specialist.i don't have any of these problems so I declined,2nd call was confirming 5 week appt which I had already canceled 5 days earlier.in my opinion you people don,t know what you' re doing.i was there for a lump,I got a ,i did'nt know,then we're going to do more blood work and sugar level,what about the lump,then we're going to set up for nose ears and throat doctor,what about the lump?...I thought it was pretty simple and you turned it into a disaster. I recently moved to WPB, Florida. In Albany, I was in the Red Team. Didn't really appreciate them until I moved here. I have been treated like crap, given the "Run around" since I got here, went to appointments that were cancelled without notification, told to call the Pharmacy after hours, given a Primary doctor on her last day before retirement, and on and on. 4 stars for the following reasons: I have deployed twice over the past 3 years in support of OEF. My first time returning home and going through the motions of getting set up for an appointment, I couldn't get anything for over 3 months. I understand the VA is very busy, but returning from overseas with everything that has been going on, we shouldn't have to wait. I also returned home again from another deployment and it took almost 2 months, which is fine. My doctor, Dr. Grimm, is great and I highly recommend any female veteran to see her. read more

I have been a patient with the Albany NY Stratton VA hospital for over 20 years. If you have any other options available to you use them first. The VA chronically schedules and cancels appointments all the time without giving any notice. Most of the time your primary doctor is what ever resident is there at the time. If you do find a Doctor you like they will probably leave in a few years. Unless you have your record sensitized almost anyone that works at the VA can read it and HIPPA is constantly violated. They have improved the outside appearance of the VA but the same problems exist simply covered up with a cheap band aide. If you speak up about the problems in the hospital it will be noted in your chart that you complained. read more

If you have a medical problem that can't be addressed with one appointment and one function forget about the VA facility in Albany. Like most government agencies this government agency consist of multiple groups which are independent of each other but this being a medical facility where medical problems require communications and coordination across many functions this facility is a disaster. Worst is the fact that with this organization no one is held accountable. Speaking from experience with a Heart condition and gradually deteriorating health condition I have now waited 13 days without any input as to when the next surgical procedure will be performed. On sending messages to the various functions no one know what the status is and no one has any responsibility to find out. Now you know why VETS die waiting for the dysfunctional VA organization to respond. When no can be identified as being responsible so the attitude is "It's not my problem" , go someplace else. read more
