Parking: There is a dedicated lot with free parking. Friendsgiving Mixology Class: We made 3 different types of martinis: chocolate espresso, apple cider, and peach cobbler. They also had mocktail options for those that don't drink alcohol. I loved the way everything was laid out and how it was so fun and interactive to follow along. We even had a game inside our name tags to help us get to know our tablemates better. Additionally, they had food catered, which was delicious - we had mushroom bruschetta, pasta salad, BBQ pork sliders, meatballs, and waffle-coated chicken bites. And they even had a delicious biscoff cake for dessert! We were given a QR code to take with us with all the drink recipes an we got to keep the shaker too. Woodburning + Charcuterie Board Class: I've been wanting to take this class for a while and so happy I could make the date. I took my mom to celebrate her birthday. We chose our designs prior to class and were presented them when we arrived. Just like the last class, everything was laid out and the live step-by-step instructions are easy to follow. It was so fun to see our creations come to life! They partnered with "If These Boards Could Talk" who guided us through making a charcuterie board while we followed along with the ingredients provided. And because there were 2 people celebrating a birthday, L&L even had a cake at the end! Vibe: LaToya and Linda of L&L really make you feel like family coming into their events. Their space is warm and inviting, just like their personalities. At the beginning of each class, they talk about how the business came to be, which I appreciate. Many of them are free and others are typically low cost. Some sell out so sign up or purchase tickets well ahead of time. I usually check out the schedule in late January and then try to attend a few events each year. The ASF, founded in 2014, used to be one week and has expanded to two weeks with fun things planned for mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends, all over metro Atlanta. The founding organizations include academic powerhouses Emory + Georgia Tech and the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. My only negative was that I signed up to volunteer but never was contacted about helping out. So either their system is dysfunctional or I fell through the cracks and was the outlier. My friends have volunteered without grief though, bah. So anyway, pencil in the science festival on your calendar for next March!

Nerd Nite is a monthly gathering of people who are interested in nerdy things: science, history,…read moreliterature, etc. Basically anything nerdy is cool here. Every month, there are three speakers who delve into their geeky area of expertise and break it down for the group. Events are usually held at Manuel's Tavern in Poncey Highland. There's a $5 cover, and also a "frequent nerd" card that will get you in for free after five Nerd Nite attendances. It's really just a chill evening of getting learnt. Come join!

Atlanta Hot Glass is a very, very cool place (no pun intended). It is the first glass blowing…read morecollective I've ever been to and it happens to be in East Decatur not that far from where I live. I first learned about Atlanta Hot Glass through the Emory Alumni Association, as strange as that may sound. I'm an alum of Emory (in case the comment above didn't make it obvious) and when I received the latest newsletter about upcoming events and goings on, an event about an interactive glass blowing night caught my attention. Fast forward two weeks and my boyfriend and I showed up at Atlanta Hot Glass, owned by Emory alum Susan Chin, and were introduced to the fascinating world of glass blowing. Let me tell you, it's harder than it looks, but lucky for all of us (there were about 20 people there in all), the instructors were fantastic. In addition to helping us make our own blown glass ornaments, they showed us some awesome examples of what you can make once you've gotten more skilled at it. We learned how hot the glass has to be to be malleable (it's kept in a 2050 degree furnace), how hot the 'glory holes' are that melt the glass shards and color the glass (2200 degrees), how glass sculptures are molded and shaped and transferred to the oven to cool down, etc. It was incredible and eye-opening and really fun. I thoroughly enjoyed myself since everyone was so friendly and willing to answer questions and assist us. Susan's cousin was great because he explained to us what was happening as the instructors were demonstrating making different pieces and when I was making my own blown glass ornament, my instructor (whose name escapes me), talked me through each step and why we did it. Atlanta Hot Glass also offers classes, studio time and opens itself up to the public like it did for Emory that night, which is great. Even if you're not sure that's your thing, you can take a course or a couple individual classes to figure out if it might be. A big kudos to the Emory Alumni Association for organizing this event and to Susan for kindly opening her studio to us. It was a fantastic and unique way to spend a Thursday.

After visiting the website, I called and spoke with Susan. She was extremely helpful and gave me lots of information. I chose the "Hands on Experience" for nine people. The process for payment and scheduling was very smooth and professional. Upon arriving, our team was greeted by the instructors, Lee and Jeremy. We were given safety tips and general information about glass blowing. Then we jumped right in. We had a blast! We each created a glass piece (paperweights and ornaments) and had a true "hands-on experience". I highly suggest this activity to large groups and small! For large groups I suggest keeping the pieces simple to allow time for your entire group to have a chance.

As a pre-med student from Georgia tech, I really enjoyed the education I received here. The outside…read moreis discouraging but the inside is everything you need to get a certificate. I did the 8 week phlebotomy course and was certified by the end of it. I definitely had more knowledge coming into the program than some of the other students but Ms. Donna makes sure everyone knows what they need to know. We drew blood on the first day that we were there! We go one at a time so Ms. Donna can watch over everyone and guide them through the steps. We did it pretty much every class, and by the end, everyone was fairly confident taking blood by themselves. Ms. Donna was the only person running the whole school when I got there. She expanded the inside to another suite so there's more room to practice and study. She is extremely talented at teaching. She'll put you on the spot about material that you learned in previous lessons, so make sure you keep up. I think this course was worth every dollar that I spent with how much hands on experience you get.

But even on the weekends it was $12! A lot! Also, the system did not read my ticket printed so I had to pay $24 to get out as they charge $24 for a lost ticket but the security help kept disconnecting the call so I had no choice. Staff - they had some CAU staff on site for the event but mostly event staff were present. Atmosphere - now the building itself definitely have HBCU vibes!! Loved everything about it! Nothing seemed dirty or too outdated. Everything worked in the bathrooms and the technology supplies were updated. I went here many years back and returned recently for Alumni Weekend after 20 years out of Atlanta…read more I'm glad to hear that they actually have changed for the better from students, classmates who got into in leadership roles and recall those bad old days too well, staff members and so forth. I attended a number of events and was thrilled to hear the President say they weren't trying to exclude and alienate conservatives from the community + still teach critical thinking skills (one of the positive aspects of my time there). Gone are the good ol' boys and now diversity (including being a first generation student) actually seems to be considered and appreciated where that wasn't my experience. The bad old days were so bad I had nothing to do with the school for about 10 years due to the presence and protection towards a group I found loathsome (and would be completely inappropriate in our modern times just as it was 20 years ago). Since my most recent visit, I can say with pride that I went to this school and am proud of my classmates for stepping up and being change so others don't have to go through what I'm sure some of them did.
