The town of Chester is about 10 miles away if you need a store for something. The campgrounds are close together. Which we don't really like. Each has a fire ring and grill to cook on. Tons of wood to scrounge for a fire but you'll need a burn permit which are free and good for the entire year. Be sure to secure your food as those cute but pesky chipmunks and squirrels will help themselves. We came before the season was open and it was wonderfully quite.

It wasn't too far from the restrooms and trash either. The drinking water was just across from us and compared to a state park or national park campground, it was pretty quiet. There is a paved hiking trail to Lake Almanor just across the entrance from the South Campground. On an early morning, I took a jog with my 1-year-old while the others were still snoozing and the weather was just perfect at 8:30 AM. Although I found that even for early July, it can get a bit cold in the early morning (1 AM-8 AM) in the tent. So pack extra blankets. There are no showers here, so you will have to find them somewhere else. Overall, this is a great spot to camp if you plan to go to Mount Lassen National Park or surrounding areas. There is a lot of space for the whole family at your campsite.

Some of the western shore comprises of private property with no beach access but there is a public beach and campground area a few miles out of town. The effects of the 2021 Dixie Fire are seen along the drive, but there were still some green pines along the shore. The beach itself was rocky but wonderfully windswept and dramatic. Late on a Saturday afternoon it was very quiet-only 2 boaters coming in and no one else using the day use area. The water was very choppy following some afternoon thunderstorms and the skies were very moody. It was a nice way to stretch my legs after a long drive from the Bay Area and hope I get the chance to check out the East shore during my visit.

Overall, it was a peaceful place to relax and we had a great time at the lake. The camp host was a bit gruff and questioned us about how thoroughly we had completed the paperwork, which felt a little unnecessary. We also noticed some inconsistency with enforcing campground rules. The posted flyer asks that dogs remain leashed and that campfires not be left unattended, but the site next to us near the bathroom frequently had their dog off leash and left their fire burning while they went to the beach. Additionally, campers across the campground played music at a very loud volume for extended periods, but it did not appear that they were approached or reminded about campground quiet expectations. Despite those issues, our overall stay was enjoyable. The lake views, location, and experience of camping right on the water made it a memorable trip, and we would consider returning.

We had the worst experience here. We paid for 5 nights. Twice the water was shut off. The first…read moretime we were not allowed to have a campfire, ( after she sold us two bundles of pine firewood for $20) and the second time we were not allowed to use our propane stove or lanterns and were forced to leave early as a result. The camp host was overbearing and was at our camp moments after we paid lecturing about putting a phone number on the pay envelope and was quite rude about it even though the envelope had no designated spot for a phone number. The host gave us a list of rules which included dogs were to be leashed at all times, no outdoor shower, no electric chainsaw, no using generators off of the blacktop, and on and on. She didn't enforce the no leash rule, but was crazy strict on every thing else. We were the only ones who kept their dog on a leash. She even knocked on our neighbors camper door to accuse him of not shutting the toilet lid in the outhouse. After we left I considered stopping payment on our check but felt we did have a couple good days so instead I contacted them to get a partial refun. My refund was denied stating we left on our own and were not forced to leave. What were we supposed to do? Sit in the dark and starve?

The campsites aren't crowded. I love the trees. Wasps. One two of our trips at least 3 people from our party were stung. They are def around the mud pond Worst things: they keep sites open even if there is an osprey nest above it crapping all over your personal stuff and just look at the concrete photos. The third time we went here no one was in the water because of the heat wave made the water temp higher and increased bird poop bacteria or something so that kinda sucked. Kids had fun playing in the woods though.

In 2022, my husband made our reservation, but due to work, I had to arrive before him. Because the reservation was under his name, I was not permitted to access our campsite when I arrived, despite sharing the same last name and being part of the reservation. I waited approximately six hours, until around 7 p.m., before the reservation could be accessed, which meant setting up our tent in the dark. We attempted to find an alternative solution, including canceling and rebooking the reservation under my name, but we were told that doing so would result in being charged twice. We attempted to book again in 2026 but ultimately had to cancel approximately two weeks in advance due to unforeseen circumstances. Under the campground's cancellation policy, we were charged an $81 cancellation fee, in addition to a previously charged $13 transaction fee. We found the policy and the lack of flexibility very disappointing. Based on our experiences, I would recommend looking into Rocky Point or PG&E-owned campgrounds in the Lake Almanor area. We have found those options to be more accommodating, well maintained, and reasonably priced.

I just got back from a second annual camping trip to Juniper Lake campground. You do need to bring…read moreyour own potable water, and there are only vault toilets. But if you can tolerate that, you will be rewarded with access to a delightful lake that has many wonderful hikes around it, beautiful trees, and amazing sunsets. There are sizeable bear boxes to store your food in, lots of room for a tent or three, fire rings, and picnic tables. Most sites have amazing shade and all are any easy walk to the lake, if not right on it. Note that the last 6-7 miles of road are gravel & rutted in places. Just allow extra time & be willing to drive very slowly at times. It's worth it! Try to make time to hike up to Crystal Lake. It's steep, but there are lots of shady places to rest on the way, and the lake is blissful for swimming in. There are about 18 campsites, most of which have great privacy and shade, and none of which are far from the comfort station. :) and at $12 a night, this campground is a jewel! Come early in the week (and day) to get the most selection. It can fill up, and only the group sites are reservable.

Hubby obliged and turned around, and we went back to check them out. They were even nicer up close, and for $65 I was sure I needed to take one home.
