What a wonderful Italian restaurant, right on Greene Ave. in the heart of Westmount! My folks dine here occasionally as they live nearby, but I've never been - until a few nights ago. Had a 6pm reservation and we were first there, but within 15-20 minutes, the restaurant was filling up fast. I recommend reservations here to ensure a seat. It clearly is a popular spot. The interior is lovely, with well spaced tables, and due to its location on the second floor of the building, it's great sitting by the front window walls to look out onto the avenue and people watch. I loved the white linens and the clean black and white aesthetic, combined with the window wall and areas of exposed bricks and tall glass-enclosed wine racks. Our server was Francesco and he was absolutely amazing. Onto the food.... wow, it was good. My dad had his regular Caesar salad and after I tried a bit of it, I could see why he's such a fan. The intact romaine leaves were so perfectly crisp and perfect, I don't think I've ever had a salad where the lettuce was so perfect. The dressing and parmesan on said salad was also perfect. Honestly, I think it was the best Caesar salad I've ever tasted. Next time, I'm ordering one, for sure. My mom and I shared the eggplant parmesan and it was delicious and not heavy or overwhelming as most eggplant parmesan dishes are. We also shared their version of Caprese salad, with buffalo mozzarella and tomatoes. This was, for me, the only miss of the night. The cheese and tomatoes were delicious, but they only used olive oil on the salad, and it really called for some good balsamic vinegar as well. (Note to self: next time ask for some balsamic on the side. The dish really called for it). My folks also shared some ice cream for dessert and they said it was super good, they could tell the quality was super high. We all had drinks (even my dad, who NEVER drinks). Dad's red wine was, he said, perfect, and my mom loved her gin martini (which she noted was the biggest martini she ever had. They sure don't scrimp on drink sizes here!). As for me, I asked Francesco for a sangria on the sweet side, and he returned with the best sangria I ever had, hands down. I am not exaggerating, it was beyond delicious. We had a wonderful dinner here. I should note, at the end of our meal, my mom had a bad reaction from her meds and her drink and it got a little concerning there for a few minutes. Francesco was really helpful to us, as I had to help my mom out. (My apologies to the restaurant and nearby diners. I know it must have been disturbing for them. Mom was fine soon after and has since had some med dosages tweaked by her doctor). I should also add that parking here is a breeze. There is a large parking lot a few yards away on Greene and parking is free after 6pm, and I think street parking is free after 6 or 9pm, too, and free all day on Sunday. FYI. Great spot for fresh pasta! Recently went here for supper and ordered the gnocci and it was delicious! The portion size was abit on the smaller size which was the only downside. We also tried the calamari and was crispy and nicely seasoned. Nice ambiance and friendly staff! read more

Saturday night and no-where to go! A friend of mine didn't realize one does not make reservation a few hours before going out to eat because your limitations will be nil.... Haha!. We found a place not to far called "Vago" Remembering the visit about 10 yrs ago with my family. Arriving early at 5:30 and practically empty that quickly changed within 45 min. Families starting piling in and the noise of laughter and screams quickly reminded me of what was once before the Pandemic. How wonderful! Service was quick and staff was pleasantly polite. We started out with the Vago Salad which was fulls of colours but was little disappointed with the vinaigrette. It lacked flavour as little as salt. Bistecca Bruschetta, Steak drippings, horseradish aioli, garlic toast was a nice zing. As for the main I had the Steak au Poivre served with fries and veggies. My friend ordered the Rack of Lamb which he totally enjoyed. I do have to mention that their Tiramisu is one of the best in Montreal. Was a pleasure visiting once again. read more

I wish I had taken a photo. Our friends said that the restaurant had just remodeled and it seems there are no new pics here yet. It's beautiful, bright modern Italian, elegant. The waitstaff are handsome in their white suits and very attentive. My husband and I were visiting from NY. Lunch was superb. The octopus, calamari, and veal dishes delicious. Filet mignon like butter! So tender, cooked to perfection. The only minor disappointments being I would have preferred a bigger, silkier Cabernet available by the glass to go with my filet and I did not get the rapini to go with the steak as stated on the menu. Atmosphere: Just lovely ~ A family owed place about a decade or so into operation, Vago is a little hard to find on Greene Ave. It is located right across the street from the Oink Oink toy store (great place too!) ... just look up to see it. It's a mid to upscale type of restaurant, decked out almost totally in wood panelling. Very cozy, homely, and extremely well kept. You'll love going there on a special date or inviting family or business associates for a meal. Vago also offers the opportunity to dine outside whenever the weather permits. Service: Very impressed. The maître d' (they have a maître d') is well informed about the foods and offers advice, help, as well as accommodations whenever required. The staff is pleasant, well organized, and very polite. Professionalism is tops here. Food: Top marks here as well. A generous, yet not over-crowded menu, offers a variety of pasta and anti-pasta dishes, rissoto as well as grilled steaks, chicken, and sea-food offerings. An extensive wine list complements the menu and is sure to include vintages for most requests. I personally loved the fact that they also offer much of their pasta, risotto, and dessert dishes glutton free (call to confirm / reserve this option first). Wow. I loved everything about this place. Apparently it was renovated pretty recently and the ambiance is lovely. Modern but warm. Hospitality front and center. My friend and I had planned on dining at Vago on a Sunday evening for a nice final dinner at the end of our trip to Montreal. We made our reservation for 9:30pm on open table, and upon walking in and telling the man behind the host desk (who we later discovered was the GM) our name, he exaggeratedly looked at his watch and said "yeah... for 9 o'clock" and took us to our table. After double checking my confirmation email and the open table app, I apologized for being late (we walked in at 9:34) but reemphasized that our reservation was for 9:30. The GM rolled his eyes and walked away. We then attempted to order a bottle of wine with our server (who was incredibly nice and understanding) but it was out of stock, as was the next bottle we requested, and any he said he would usually recommend. The GM came over and told us "The kitchen is closing in 15 minutes. If you want to order something, you should do it now" in an incredibly snarky tone after we had been seated for maybe 3 minutes. I work in a restaurant. I understand that everyone working in the kitchen wants to go clean up and go home when the restaurant closes. What I don't understand is why they would take a 9:30 reservation if the kitchen closes at 9:45, or why the GM had to be so rude about it. I decided just to stick with a glass of wine, but my friend ordered the pasta primavera and asked to add shrimp. The food was ehh, but the bill came and her meal (a bowl of spaghetti with marinara sauce and three shrimp as well as a glass of wine) was $65. She asked the GM how it added up to so much. He responded "3 shrimp? $20." I have never felt so unwelcome and been treated so rudely in a restaurant. After a wonderful trip in Montreal where we ate at tons of fantastic restaurants, this place was pretty awful. Would not recommend to anyone. read more

The tiramisu was good, i would suggest sharing it because it can be too filling. I went with a 20-people group and they were nice enough to accommodate us by giving us a room to dine in. The only reason I gave a 4 and not a 4 1/2 or a 5 is because I found my food a bit salty and my mom said also her food had a bit too much salt. All in all I definitely recommend this restaurant.... My husband and I found and enjoyed this little gem on our last evening in Montreal. Monday night and a bit quiet but wonderful. Delicious food, lovely wait staff and cool space. Portions are geared to the perpetually overfed Westmounter. If you are a robust eater don't count on this joint to fill you up. Service was caring and genuinely wanted to please but a bit clumsy and out of time. Some of the food was served in the danger zone, temps above 40 degrees Fahrenheit and below 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Inadequate ventilation. The back of the resto was continually enveloped in a haze of cooking smoke. Menu on web site does not match menu in resto. Lose the web site or keep it updated. Chicken in lemon sauce would have failed as a dish prepared for a review at any culinary institute. And why would it have failed? It contained no lemon in the sauce. read more

This restaurant deserves some praise on several points: the decor, the ambiance, the staff, and even the restaurateur. However, the menu left a bit to be desired. While the food isn't bad, it's simply not classed as highly as the restaurant presents itself. In fact, several menu items are quite bland when compared to what should be contemporarily offered. Additionally, this undesirably highlights certain aspects (too heavy, too salty, clumpy cream sauce, etc.) - these should not be concerns for good Italian food, but at this place they can be. There's no reason why this cannot be a five star establishment, but that can happen once they've considerably and appropriately 'tweaked' their menu. read more

While the decor is appealing, the server we had and the food we ordered was underwhelming. The server, who is older, appears to differentiate between patrons as to whom he provides top quality service to. We overheard him telling patrons about the specials and had to ask him what they were. His attitude was too big for the restaurant. We have had more flavourful spaghetti bolognese and veal Limonata. We had amazing experiences at the Taj and the Bonaparte in Montreal (been going for 20 years travelling from Vancouver). Would not return to Vago! read more

As we always go there, the last time we made a reservation, we call back the day of to confirm everything though we reserved a few days back. Everything was fine they said 8:30 Saturday perfect. We confirmed the reservation 3 times after the initial call. We call back an hour before and we are told there is no reservation in that name, they cannot take us, it was a partner in the phone who was very rude, and at the end tells us he is very busy and hangs up. The ironic part was that the person on the phone restated the reservation phone call word by word. We were left wondering where to take the 6 guests we invited to the restaurant. Their excuse is that they took the reservation but did not write it down. Very rude and very reckless. We were regular customers a well. Horrible management. read more

Never been here before and I have to admit, the rose sauce is top. Complex yet simple tasting with bursting flavours. I also had the muscles which were not fresh due to the fishy after taste. Perhaps it was because it was a Monday night. Perhaps the owner was off that night. Whatever the reason, our group of four were very disappointed in our experience. The staff tried to make up for the long wait between our appetizers and the mains but apologies don't help once you've lost patience and appetites. The food was acceptable though not outstanding. Three of us ordered seafood linguini; two arrived piping hot and a third was too cold to eat. And we all know that when you send something back once you've waited too long to get it in the first place, the evening is now a bust. To their credit they did remove the charge for the returned linguini and coffees were on the house. However, with so many good Italian restaurants in Montreal, it's not likely we'll return. Please note, that on our last visit which was not on a Monday, I had absolutely no complaints.
