There were numerous issues with masking, overspray, cleanup, trim work, and damage to areas of our home, including our banister. When concerns were raised, we often encountered resistance rather than a willingness to simply correct the workmanship. My greatest concern, however, has been the behavior of the owner, John. In my experience, his communication style is bullying, intimidating, and particularly aggressive toward me as a woman when I question the quality of the work or insist that the contract be followed. Today, John came to our home to discuss the remaining work. I remained calm while explaining my concerns, but he began yelling at me. My husband asked him to stop yelling, and John responded by telling my husband that they should "take it outside." In my opinion, this was not professional conflict resolution--it was intimidation. John has also made repeated references to a mechanics lien despite the fact that we repeatedly told him we intended to pay what was properly owed once the contracted work was satisfactorily completed. Today he told us that he had filed a preliminary mechanics lien. The repeated use of lien threats during disputes over unfinished or unsatisfactory workmanship felt like another attempt to pressure and intimidate us rather than professionally resolve the issues. When I questioned the quality of the painted surfaces, John told me that I had paid for a "gloss finish, not a smooth finish." I found that response astonishing. We contracted for professional painting, and I do not believe that choosing a gloss finish means a homeowner should accept visibly poor surface preparation or workmanship. We take great pride in maintaining our home and expected the work to be completed according to the contract and with reasonable professional standards. Asking a contractor to correct incomplete, damaged, or poorly executed work is not unreasonable, and a customer should not be yelled at, bullied, threatened, or made to feel intimidated for raising legitimate concerns. My advice to anyone considering AAA Painting is to read every line of the contract carefully, document everything with photographs, keep all communication in writing, and inspect every area thoroughly before making final payment. Based on our experience with the workmanship, damage to our property, treatment of our home, communication, repeated refusal to leave when asked, and the owner's conduct toward me, I cannot recommend AAA Painting.
