She's not at this location anymore but she does the tailoring from home, just gotta drop it off. She didn't have to measure me, I just put pins on where I wanted it taken in! Elvira is a gem! I had a wedding on short notice due to personal reasons- I bought a beautiful dress from BHLDN 3 months before our date, had it overnight shipped to my house and then began my search for a tailor. I called and left messages with at least six places in San Diego, and only two actually bothered to call me back. One told me that she could make time for me a month before my wedding, and Elvira who told me she could see me the following week! I was so relieved, although it made me a little nervous that she had so much more availability than everyone else I had called. When I met her she made all my doubts disappear though, she was very thorough in saying what she would take in on my dress, and made me feel very comfortable. It was clear that she knew what she was doing and had lots of experience- she didn't try to sell me on building my bra into the dress because with the way she was taking it in she said it wouldn't show! I came for three different fittings, my first to try things on, a second to take things down a full size and the third to try it all again before deciding how much length to take off. In the end the dress looked absolutely perfect, and I cannot say enough how happy I was with her work. Her shop is located in her garage, but don't let that stop you. She is very professional while still being very warm, and my dress fit perfectly when she was done. I came to Valente's Tailor Shop on a referral from a very dear friend. And I am so grateful I called. At the time, I had just purchased a dress for my Elopement that was in approximately 2 months. (We married back in January during the massive rain storms). The dress almost fit off the rack but needed a hem, a bustle, and some work with the corsetted back straps. The dress was vintage lace and in a sheath style cut with a train. Very elegant, but also very foxy ;). Perfect for an elopement! Elvia worked some serious magic making the hem perfectly seamless, incorporating the bustle to be perfectly tailored to the style of the dress. The dress had a couple of layers, so the nude underlayer had a bustle as well as the lace overlayer. And the work done on the straps and bust of the dress made the dress fit like a glove. Elvia is the best!!! I bought my dress online from a sample sale and the only size they had was a bridal size 12 (I wear a bridal size 8). The dress was so beautiful and a great bargain so I couldn't pass it up. When I first tried it on it was huge on me; I felt like I was wearing a tent! I was worried it wouldn't be able to be taken in because of all the intricate beading and overlays. I started looking for a tailor and I found Elvia! I explained the above story to her and she had me bring the dress in. She was so friendly and professional and knew exactly what to do to make my dress look beautiful. She was going to take it in, add tulle underneath so it could be more full in the skirt, & a bustle. I also told her that I wanted to add a corset but I wasn't sure if that would be possible. She assured me that she could do it and she did. I'll admit, I was a bit apprehensive at first because I knew she worked from home and I had no plan B if my dress did not come out as expected. But the good reviews and her kind demeanor reassured me. Thankfully, I had nothing to worry about! End result: -My dress originally had an invisible zipper and she was able to put in a corset. It looked like it was always a part of the dress and I got tons of compliments on it! -The bustle was difficult to do with my dress but she was able to do it and it still looked nice! -I wanted a fuller skirt but wasn't sure how to do that, she suggested adding more tulle in the skirt and that did the trick. -The dress fit like a glove. -She is extremely reasonably priced. For adding a corset from scratch, taking it in on the sides, bustle, and adding extra layers of tulle to the skirt was only $350! -She was so kind, professional, and responsive to questions and phone calls throughout the whole process. -She also altered my mother in law's dress and my sister in law's bridesmaid dress and those came out beautifully as well. Note: She does work out of her garage but that shouldn't discourage you. Everything is neat and clean and private. She does work by appointment only but she is very accommodating. Elvia did a great job accommodating me with complicated wool shirts that needed hemming in every direction possible, haha. They all look and fit great. Plenty has been said about the shop environment, just know that you have to work on an appointment basis, you can't show up whenever you want, but she is very flexible and I'm sure I tested the limits of that and never heard a thing about it from her. For the amount of work I had done, her prices were definitely fair. 20 bucks per shirt to have it hemmed on the waist and sleeves and have the shoulders, sleeves, and torso all brought in. She works conservatively to make sure you are getting what you want as she goes, rather than going whole hog and going too far, that's always a great approach. I will also add that you shouldn't be in a huge hurry, because she is just one person who is undoubtedly very popular. So, for me with my three shirts (with a lot of work and a few returns that were because of my indecision), it took about 2 weeks all told to get them back. But if I had asked for less work to be done and had been more decisive I have no doubt it could have easily been a week or less, so I think the turn-around time is moderate. Also, if I had been in a true hurry I have no doubt she would have been able to squeeze me in as a rush job. That's it! I'm happy! read more
