Coincident with Hardee's night march to attack Federal forces in E. Atlanta, Wheeler's cavalry [Flag of the CSA] was sent to seize McPherson's wagon trains parked N. of the Decatur public square, guarded by Sprague's 16th A.C. brigade & three sections of field artillery. Wheeler's men, dismounted, were deployed S. of the R.R. & drove Sprague's troops, together with the Chicago Board of Trade & Michigan batteries, [Flag of the USA] to the public square where, outflanked, they withdrew with the wagon trains to the North Decatur Road. Wheeler made no pursuit because of peremptory orders to rejoin Hardee in E. Atlanta." Wheeler's Cavalry made a gallant charge here and captured a battery of Federal artillery with officers and men." During the American Civil War, Decatur became a strategic site in Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. In July 1864, Major-General James McPherson occupied the town to cut off the Confederates' supply line from Augusta. On July 22, during the Battle of Atlanta, Confederate cavalry under Major-General Joseph Wheeler attacked McPherson's supply wagons and the Union troops left to defend the wagons. When the property was sold, the mall developers were ordered to leave the cemetery alone. However, as part of the grading process, about ten-twelve feet or so of earth was removed, leaving a weird little building with the actual gravesites on top. You need a key to access the actual graves, but it's cool to point out to people who don't know about it. Five stars for an honest to god graveyard in a Wal-Mart parking lot. EDIT TO ADD: If you're in the Wal-Mart parking lot, drive as far away from Columbia as possible until you get to the edge of the lot. Follow it around until you're practically behind the Napa and the mausoleum should be right in front of you, hidden behind some trees.

The person working the register said hello when I came in and went back to looking at their computer screen. But once I was no longer in view, the person came to do a circle around the area where I was standing and said, "I'm doing inventory." GIRL, BYE. I'm an auditor by profession and I know what conducting an inventory looks like. Also, people just doing their job do their jobs without explanation required. There were some other things this person did and overall, it was an ugly experience. I haven't been profiled in a long time and it still feels gross and reminds me how awful people can be. I found something special for my friend, and I bought it. I also bought it for myself because after this experience I needed something soothing too. I won't let one person change my mind about a place I shopped at for years but if I see this person when I walk in, I'm turning around and leaving. HomeGrown has great gifts if you want something locally-made that feels special. And in all these years, this is the only time I've experienced anything like this so I'll likely be back. Just some of the shine is gone.

Protect them from themselves. - Parking in Decatur is bad, marta is cheaper/smarter. - Plenty of food around the area. - Extensive bus service for S and Central DeKalb. - Agnes Scott, Devry and Emory transit service. Decatur Station is one of the inaugural marta stations that opened in 1979 and although I have no data to support it, I would say it is Top 5 for final destinations of riders on weekdays. The exterior has been recently renovated, but over the past 25 yrs of riding marta myself, I've yet to see an interior renovation besides the breeze card machines. No big deal though. A lot of riders stop here to "visit" the DeKalb County Courthouse but it is also central to one of the best public libraries in the ATL metro area. Agnes Scott is just a klick away and Decatur HS is sneezing distance. You should have no problem making it to the restaurant and bar scene but note that marta curtails service a little after midnight so enjoy yourselves responsibly. Decatur Station bus terminal provides expansive service for S. DeKalb. I've taken it all the to the county-line where DeKalb County has a massive landfill called Seminole. To get there you go south until you smell it and then east until you step in it. Architecturally the station is below city elevation. Not as low as Peachtree Center though. The Eastbound platform is on the opposite side of the Westbound platform. I'm not sure why stations are designed that way but that's how gang wars start... separating the E and W (rimshot). A lot art work inspired by youth outreaches is displayed at the station.
