I visited HomeGrown today to look for a comfort gift for a friend whose husband passed away. I was browsing the candles and toiletries area, taking my time with smelling the scents and deliberating over my choice. The person working the register said hello when I came in and went back to looking at their computer screen. But once I was no longer in view, the person came to do a circle around the area where I was standing and said, "I'm doing inventory." GIRL, BYE. I'm an auditor by profession and I know what conducting an inventory looks like. Also, people just doing their job do their jobs without explanation required. There were some other things this person did and overall, it was an ugly experience. I haven't been profiled in a long time and it still feels gross and reminds me how awful people can be. I found something special for my friend, and I bought it. I also bought it for myself because after this experience I needed something soothing too. I won't let one person change my mind about a place I shopped at for years but if I see this person when I walk in, I'm turning around and leaving. HomeGrown has great gifts if you want something locally-made that feels special. And in all these years, this is the only time I've experienced anything like this so I'll likely be back. This store is full of locally made goodies and I recently found 18k gold plated stainless steel jewelry for $20 a piece??? That means waterproof, rust resistant jewelry for only 20 a piece!! I recently bought jewelry made of the same materials for $80 a piece, but you can find the same quality here for so much less!! Idk how more people don't know about this!!! read more

I really enjoy browsing and shopping here over the years. I always seem to get greeted when I enter [and not like the other store ... ahem ... on the square]. They used to have a mini clearance section that was totally reasonable. I've also bought full priced things as supporting local Georgian artists is important. But it helps that they also have really cute jewelry here even though the selection is smaller. But of course they have other stuff: pottery, art, t-shirts, soap, lotion, kiddie stuff, etc. I also really enjoy the warmth of this place. They had a Desperate Dude Days (aka last minute shopping) that had free beer, doughnuts, and giftwrapping. How cool is that?! Their newsletter with the parking info is super helpful as well. I came across this store during a much needed walk after dinner nearby. There is an eclectic array of items to look through including candles, jewelry, accessories, animal toys, and plenty more. Staff were super friendly and attentive during our time there. Prices were fairly listed and some of the items were even made in Atlanta itself. I knew this shop was my kind of place when I ambled in and immediately wanted to buy half the store for myself and half the store as presents for friends and family. HomeGrown Decatur (not to be confused with restaurant Home Grown on Memorial) reminded me of nearby Wild Oats & Billy Goats but maybe a little hipper and funkier. The jewelry offerings were extensive, and there were plenty of t-shirts, mugs, bath goods, toys, and other handmade/local items. Lots of things available to show off your Atlanta/Decatur pride! A couple of us were actually on our way to get dessert and stepped inside on a whim. The nice employee didn't give us the evil eye when we showed up close to closing, she didn't hound or bug us, and she cheerfully bid us bye when we left. Parking is always a bear in downtown Decatur. You'll have to make do with pay lots or metered street parking, free at certain times. The MARTA station is super close to this store though. Decatur is certainly a local gift shop mecca, and I'm glad to have paid HomeGrown Decatur a visit since I've passed it tons of times but had never popped in until now. Guess I had the impression it was some sort of new age-y establishment based on prior window displays. I'll be back soon for sure! read more

We slid into this local joint about a half hour before closing. While the worker was super helpful and friendly, this was clearly not enough time to look at all the awesome stuff this place has to offer. The Decatur area pushes art pretty hard, especially the work of locals, and HomeGrown is another unique find. There really is something for everyone here. T-shirts, coffee mugs, artwork, earrings, pins...all at a range of prices and there were clearance items when we dropped by. Also there is a shrine to Mr. T, and I pity the fool that doesn't check it out. Definitely worth the stop, and if I'm in the area again 10/10 will stop in. If I could give negative stars I would. My friends and I honestly had a horrible experience. Last week we went into homegrown to look for stickers and small trinkets but the worker there honestly made the experience so uncomfortable. While looking at stickers and things she kept following around as if to keep an eye on us and then while looking at cards she made a snide remark towards us about "if this was our first time". She said it in a way that was clearly condescending. It wasn't until we got closer to the stickers where we really noticed she was keeping extra attention on us, other customers were in the store and did not get the same supervision. When we were checking out a customer in front received such a cordial response and friendly demeanor but when we came up she changed entirely. Her behavior was crass and when she handed the receipt she basically threw it at us and dropped it on the floor leaving my friend to pick it up. We will not be going to this establishment again because of how rude and disrespectful our experience. And I'm honestly so disappointed and disgusted. Please avoid this establishment, go to Square Foot instead! read more

This place is soooooooo cute! You'll find this gem in downtown decatur, right in between Calle Latina and the metro PCS. It's like an ode to Atlanta! There's all sorts of cute things like local art, clothing, accessories, home goods, and there were even some body care items from those in the area. Although I did not purchase anything, I loved the feel of the store and loved just about everything in the store. The young lady working at the store was very welcoming and asked if we needed any help. This is a place you want to come to for a nice gift or a cute card or something new and cool to put in your home. HomeGrown Decatur's website explains that it is "a member staffed, cooperative style artist market providing local artists, artisans and craftsmen a venue for showing, selling and demonstrating their work." I like the idea behind the store (although what's up with the non-gender neutral language? What about craftswomen? and craftsfolk who eschew the binary system of sex differences?) and I liked the array of items I saw when I popped in this afternoon. My objective was to acquire a pack of non-special occasion stationary cards and envelopes. I was too lazy to drive to Paper Source in Virginia-Highland, so I walked into Decatur with the hope that a store in the Square would be offering what I was looking for. HomeGrown Decatur delivered in measure. One of the two friendly people staffing the store walked with me to the back half of the store to show me the stationary by Avie Designs, "a small stationery company out of Decatur, Georgia created in 2007." The stationary sets were beautiful and although a tad pricier than the ones I would have purchased at Paper Source, the paper print is distinctive and the cards are hand-folded. SCORE! My pops and I write to each other at least once and sometimes twice a week, so I go through a lot of stationary. I'm so excited that I now know where to purchase cards made by Decatur entrepreneur at a Decatur-based artist collective. 'cuz let's be real: I love my city something fierce! read more

My husband liked the back section which had more humorous items like handmade sock puppets, funny mugs and cards, etc. I liked the front with handmade jewelry and soaps. What's not to love about HomeGrown Decatur? It is packed with locally made goods varying from quirky plush toys, local pride shirts, duct-tape wallets, zombie soap and much much more! It's FANTASTIC for unique gifts for loved ones. But, it really brightens up my day when I find an awesome something for myself...which is easy to find ;) And the merchandise is constantly changing. So, they're continuously bringing in new artists. But, don't get confused about the name. Google Maps certainly does! It likes to mix up Home Grown (the restaurant) and this HomeGrown (shop)! Parking is located on nearby side streets with meters. There's also parking in the nearby lot on the same street as HomeGrown. It's $6 for 3 hours. And there's also parking in the courthouse parking deck. Also, they gift wrap for FREE!!! Yay! But, this adorable shop is amongst other gems. My all-time favorite local business. I love it because it promotes all of the local art and craft makers. It's a great way to buy my favorite artist handmade products. Every time I come in they have some of the same products and they always have new products so it's always worth going back again and again. And a bonus it's in downtown Decatur, and there's so much to eat and do in that area. If you go in there back room they have a small selection of clearance items, and I have found some awesome pieces. And when you're done just go next-door to butter and cream which is also some of the best ice cream you'll ever have because it's all made right there in Decatur. A cute little arts and gifts shop on Decatur Square. My boyfriend and I typically like SQ/FT (around the corner) more, but HomeGrown stays open later. They have a variety of items - clothing, jewelry, art, housewares, etc. A lot of different options for various people. I would but more, but it is a bit on the pricey end. I have bought magnets and pins, chap stick, jewelry over the years. So many small stuff. There are a number of items in to store that make me crack up though, I will admit. HomeGrown Decatur is a new business to downtown Decatur. Located directly across from Yogurt Tap and Java Monkey, this new boutique store showcases dozens of local Decatur (and Oakhurst) artists. What a great opportunity! Plus, it sees like they are taking applications to include more artists. They have a number of great items: handcrafted jewelry, Decatur signage, wine bottle holders, paintings, clothing, granola, and gluten-free cookies. On the sidewalk, there was a table with plants for sale. Our favorite item that we saw: sock puppets with a mouth shaped like a sandwich...really cool. You will definitely find some unique gift ideas for the holidays or a friend's upcoming birthday...and what a great way to support not only a local business, but local Decatur citizens. There is even a craft table in the back room where high school and college students (or anyone else) can contribute to a "community art project." read more

I am a huge fan of handmade art and crafts, and can really appreciate the efforts that go into such things, as I have been a crafter much of my creativity-soaked life. HomeGrown is like a toy box in the way that you approach it not knowing quite what you'll find NOR what exactly you're even looking for, but you know it's going to be awesome. Basically, I'd describe this place as a consignment shop for crafters. So, I'm guessing items can change fairly regularly depending upon store or artist stock and feelings. At the time I stopped in, I found many wonderful things from Atlanta-sights themed coasters, license plate jewelry, and superhero baby-bibs, to alcohol bottles made into lamps, something I can only describe as a shrine to Mr. T, quirky tee shirts and bow ties, duct tape wallets, and even a felted and stuffed bread-cat shaped pillow. I KNOW RIGHT, SO COOL! Things like these make great gifts and collectibles, seriously. Plus, you're helping someone's blood-sweat-and-tears little local crafting business, so you can feel totally warm and fuzzy about it. HomeGrown is also in a super cool spot in downtown Decatur amongst bars and restaurants, a froyo shop, a bicycle shop, a MARTA station, and many other stores and strollable sidewalks. I've been picking up little gifts from HG for almost 10 years now. Whenever I'm in Decatur, I always swing in to visit the Mr. T shrine, grabs some postcards and usually an art print, piece of jewelry or keychain. The mix of art is super funky, much like my city. They have expanded to a few artists that I know are *not local, but I still appreciate the small batch goods. While the walkway is a little narrow to navigate, if you are careful and have some time, take a stroll through and see what goodies you can find. read more

I spent an entire day Christmas shopping and selling my soul to the consumerist devil by the time I reached Homegrown. My husband and I were taking a casual stroll after shopping at another local shop when we came across it. Now I feel slight regret knowing that I could of purchased more ATL centric gifts for my loved ones. I love that when I walked in the first thing you noticed is that everything is created by the blood, sweat, and tears of Atlantans. This is my jam. I love buying local art, supporting local artists, going to local shows, and overall being local. When coming into Homegrown you will find hand made ceramic pieces such as vases, mugs, or wall art. Beautiful handmade jewelry, hand bags, candles, soap, you name it, you got it. The best part of Homegrown is when you go into the back of the shop, you will find artwork from local artists and a whole corner dedicated to Bread Cat (if you have no idea what Bread Cat is, Google it). One might think that shopping at a place like this might be slightly more expensive, but the honest truth is that everything is fairly priced considering your neighbors have created these treasures by hand. read more

I love being part of HomeGrown Deactur! As a working artist I get to meet the customers, talk to them and stay in touch with what people are looking for. The owners, Lori and Beth, work their butts off to promote us and the shop. It's been open just over a year and we have a LOT of regulars who come in to see what's new. HomeGrown is probably one of my favorite shops in Decatur. You can find something for the one person who is always a pain in the ass to buy for, and everything is local. There are even items for the dog. Cool and true story that doesn't have a whole lot to do with this store: My husband bought a ceramic dish here for his mom in Pennsylvania. The dish was created from a local guy and he put his initials at the bottom. My husband's brother out in LA purchased some sort of ceramic cup from Etsy, also as a gift for his mom. On Christmas after she opened her presents, they realized that the ceramic gifts were from the same person after my brother-in-law noticed they had a similar style and the same initials on the bottom. (Oh, and he looked on his Etsy account too and noticed the seller was an Atlanta local). read more

Not to be mistaken with Homegrown the delicious brunch place. This Homegrown is a quirky boutique home to many local artists where they sell their wares and artwork. You can find quirky, kitschy, classy, cool, and odd all under one roof. If you're an out of towner looking for that Atlanta souvenir this is also a great place to pop into as some of the local artists do tend to create Atlanta flavored gifts and trinkets. A lot of the staff also seem to be volunteering artists. So you might be able to talk to the artist of the item you purchase or learn a bit more about them or the work. Decatur parking can be a pain, there are a lot of pay for parking/street parking sometimes you can get lucky and find an off shoot with free street parking. The shop is also surrounded by numerous other boutiques and eateries so if you do have to do some traveling to get here, you can make it a little shop day and explore Decatur. A bunch of us actually ended up doing that and just kinda explored all the shops otherwise I'd never have found myself into Homegrown. Overall, the place has a little something for everyone and a really good place to find quirky, unique gifts. read more

Everything is crafted by local artists from around Atlanta. Some of these same artists work the front counter - so you my buy something and the actual crafter ends up taking your money directly - kind of cool if you ask me. They sell everything from local art showcasing Atlanta landmarks and such to sculptures and jewelry. In the back room there is clothing, baby items, pillows, and kitchen linens. Every time I come in I am surprised by something new and have yet to leave empty-handed. I've mostly purchased earrings, but also a few pieces of art (prints) as well. I usually head here after eating at Victory or another of the great eateries close by. The staff is quite helpful if you are trying to find something in particular and is always happy to give you information on the artists. Prices are reasonable considering everything in the place is art and locally crafted - one of my favorite places to shop for sure. read more

My daughter's were excited to visit this new artsy place in our hometown Decatur. Upon entering the store, they were unwelcome. They were followed throughout the store and then after being fed up with the poor treatment, decided to leave, but were accused of stealing....for what reason? Brown skin. The store employees are in dire need of diversity training. My grown daughters both employed and college students did not steal anything and felt very ashamed for having their 1st experience of racial profiling and degradation. Shame on you Homegrown. I go in here every chance I get. It needs more than one trip because there is so much stuff to look at. After my first visit I was positive I would have to apply to be one of the artists here. New stuff is always popping up. It's sensory over load at it's best. Plus the more you go the more artists you meet that all work and sell there. I went here the other day looking for a small gift for a friend, and found something absolutely perfect. They have an excellent variety of items - Christmas ornaments, soaps, wall art, jewelry, etc. Lots of humorous items. Pricing is very reasonable. My only gripe is that the scent of the shop is overpowering - I had to wait outside in the rain while my boyfriend completed our purchase because it was strong enough to trigger a migraine. read more

I have been shopping at Homegrown for the last 4 years. Even though they are way over price (air-plants at $6 each!) I have always supported them. I live in the area and our family has a business in the square. We love nothing more then to contribute to local business. However, the this past week I had a very upsetting interaction with the owner of Homegrown. My friends and I parked in the back of the business to run in quickly before heading to the airport (My friends were out of town and had requested to go shop there before departing). On the way into the shop we decided to step inside Calle, the establishment next door to Homegrown. As we are getting our drinks, a woman stomps in yelling at the top of her lungs at the server and for anyone else to hear. Someone is parked in her spot in the back and she demands they move their car. As we are trying to process what is happening our sweet server admits that she might be the one parked in her spot. The woman proceeds to ask our server if she can read. There is a sign that says parking only for such and such. That she is the owner of Homegrown and that no one should be parked in her spot! Even though there are plenty of spots open (Did I mention it was just noon at this point). I start walking towards my car to move it and to avoid anymore public drama. However, I can't move because she has purposely blocked everyone in. I stand there as she is running to every business near by and doing the same thing. I walk back into the restaurant to wait for her to come back so that I may move my car (91 degrees outside). She comes back after 5 or so minutes yelling again that the server move her car. I very quietly stand up and say, "Ma'am it's actually my car and we are waiting to pay to leave". She then yells at us (as the whole restaurant is watching and listening) I don't care, move your car right now. There are 3 of you!!". Again she proceeds to tell us that she is the owner of Homegrown and she does not care and she is going to call the police. My friends and I are mortified (along with everyone in the restaurant) at the way this woman is acting. Not to mention she keeps mentioning her business. As we are walking out to move the car she continues harassing us. She then walks over with a cop to try and force us to do what we were already doing. The cop was very nice and asked if we would mind just moving. Of course there was no problem moving the car as we were leaving anyways. I'm so embarrassed that any business owner in the square would ever act that way to anyone. Not to mention the way she treated our poor server who was so sweet and polite. Coming into a business making a scene when you are a grown woman and business owner over a parking spot is completely uncalled for. We will never step foot into Homegrown again. We are simply disgusted with the way this woman treated local patrons and employees of the City of Decatur. read more

I was dubious to go into this store because of it's name, but I was excited once I realized it's a local arts store! They have a great selection of local artists' work, with a lot of jewelry, some lamps, decorative things, pictures, tee shirts, even some cooking stuff. They also have some children's art for sale, like earrings made by a local middle school girl, which I thought was really great. The prices vary widely, but that's to be expected. I ended up buying a print that has a really touching quote on it, and I'm happy that I supported a local artist by doing so.
